34 FPS

Just wondering how can I be part of the development team.

I'm currently working on how to hook up the 3D functions that were declared in the Radeon source code and tie it to Mesa3D. I was hoping I can do this because the OpenGL teapot sample program I have here is way tooooo slow, at 34 FPS.

At any rate, 34 FPS is definitely lame considering Radeon 9000 Pro can do better than that. That card has pixel shaders and can probably process millions of polygons per sec, though.

I would love seeing BeOS R5 and Radeon 9000 Pro just break that 34 FPS barrier. With, of course, the great help of the source and data sheets. Seeing a 300 FPS on that teapot program might just happen.

How about it? Can it be done?

Thomas, I would love you forever if you could add support for the Radeon 9700 Pro. That video card is the only thing keeping me from installing BeOS - BeOS MAX Edition v2's Radeon Graphics Driver seems to recognise the card and I get a color display... it's just that everything is messed up beyond comprehension. The entire screen is blue, but the windows n stuff are compressed and streched and scrambled in the upper approx. 1/4 of the screen, and the mouse pointer appears totally black and skips around like crazy.

PLEASE add in support for the 9700! I'll give you a quarter... ;-)

The screen works when I switch to a real monitor and
then back. I think when there is a resolution to to
true pixel 1400x1050 the problem is gone, because
the graphic chip have not to recalculate the resultion
to the ramdac.

Are you able to put in this one?

I just bought a Radeon 9000 Pro just to play with the driver.

I hope I can get into the development team, though.

By the way, I installed the driver and they look fine here.

Great work there, keep it going.

Thanks.

Works great with 64Mb Radeon 9000 Pro

I just purchased a 64 Mb Radeon 9000 Pro (dual display), installed the driver, shut down my system, installed the card, rebooted, and it worked fine! (I did see a bit of distortion on the left edge of the screen at 80Hz though... backing it down to 75 worked better...)

My system details:

Asus TUSL2-C mobo w/ Intel 815EP B-Step (for Tualatin processors)
Intel Celeron 850
512Mb RAM (Apacer CAS3, 256Mb x2)
Ensoniq AudioPCI soundcard
3com 3C905B-TX network
Tekram DC-390U2W SCSI card
Plextor 12x10x32 SCSI CD-RW
Plextor 40x SCSI CD-ROM

Odd are pretty good that if you're using an Intel based mobo, this will work better for you (it seems like most that have problems have noted they have Via chipsets on their mobo...)

Now if only the dual head worked! Until then I'm going to be VERY happy! :-)

This driver works fine with my Radeon 7500 as long as I have just one screen connected. But when I connect the second display (shutdown, connect, start) I only get two black screens. ;(

it seems that with this driver, "famous" Mozilla/ATI bug (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101055) reached us.
From time to time BeZilla crashes badly, leading system into KDL.

With Be Inc. own driver all is OK.

Great, but one more thing before awesome..

Okay,

Thomas, great work.. perfect mode switching!
One thing though, you need to add the changes pel made to the accelerant!

This allows overlay while watching TV using an app such as ktv (excellent app BTW). Otherwise the screen is plain white, which sucks..

Though I am willing to live with this for a while (as I did before for a long time) because I can switch to 640x480 and have a full screen view pretty smoothly on my BePC anyway.

Get it done!!

Oh.. and thanks a trillion and a half d00d!

Hello,
I think part of your problem may be your mobo. I too have a mobo with a VIA chipset (it is an Abit KT-20 mobo) and I have an ATI Radeon 8500(64MB). I can not get the two to work together. I have to use VESA mode to get color with my Radeon. Not sure what to do unless we send Thomas a VIA chipset mobo to develop and test with.
Later,
Serpentor

Thomas, add Radeon 7200 (id 5144) to the compatibility list!

Problems with ATI Radeon 7500
 By evanghelatos - Posted on October 16, 2002 - 10:03:34   (#3630)

I have the next configuration of my computer:
-motherboard Epox 6VBA2 with VIA chipset
-Intel Pentium III 550Mhz processor with 512k cache
-128Mb SDRAM
-harddisk IBM 120GXP, 40Gb
-sound onboard AC97
-modem Ambient
And now, the problem: I bought an original "Built by ATI" video card ATI Radeon 7500 from a friend. On his computer, the card is working fine, without any problems. When I install it on my computer, this card doesn't work at all. First I have a Windows Millenium OS. I thought that the OS is the problem and I reinstall the OS. I put the ultimate VIA drivers for the motherboard and for the ATI Radeon. The card still doesn't work. The systems hangs even in Windows, not to speak about the games...Then I upgraded the flash Bios of the motherboard, I install Windows XP, Service Pack 1, drivers, etc but the card still doesn't work. The BIG problem is:all this time, I have another card ATI Radeon 7500 of another friend. These cards are identical. On my system, his card is working fine, without problems, but my card did not work. My card on my friends' computers is working fine.....What a hell is going on...can you help me with an advise? Please help me solve this problem. The problem is the video card or the motherboard?

More "switching problem" info...

Current version when comment was posted: v3.2.2
I have a Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO and also experience the "black screen of death" when trying to switch resolutions. The weird thing is, this only happens if I boot directly into BeOS. If I load Windows first, then load BeOS via LOADBEOS.COM, everything works great--I can switch resolutions, refresh rates, and bit-depth all without incident.

Another weird thing is that I also get the BSOD if I try to change or save the current theme with BeTheme (available here at BeBits). Again this only happens if I boot directly into BeOS... if I load Windows first, everything is fine.

This leads me to believe that the current Be driver is not properly initializing some part of the hardware.

I ordered the card because I thought that it works with the driver - I should read reviews more carefully :-( The 128Mb Versions seems to work but not the 64Mb one. Now I have a problem (no TV nomore and 60 Hz eye-killing screen). Are there any tips to make this card working with the actual driver ... or are there planned any updates to support the 64Mb Version of Radeon All in Wonder 8500DV?
Thanks for any help!!

experiments about switching problem
 By SD - Posted on October 3, 2002 - 22:07:45   (#3430)
Current version when comment was posted: v3.2.2
Thomas, so far i have feeling that calling some function s from Radeon_WaitForIdle() before calling Radeon_SetMode() in SET_DISPLAY_MODE() is helpful.
After some experiments i put before SetMode() call two items:
Radeon_ResetEngine( ai );
Radeon_WaitForIdle( ai );
and it helped in my case.
Though, it is still lagging when switching from low resolution to high resolution - with repainting background and with filling desktop with Tracker views.
My card is Radeon 32 DDR AIW, with single output - DVI connected to analog monitor via adapter. Card Info in devices is 0x1002/5144

Have a Dell Lattitude C600 Laptop supplied by my employer. Running in VESA mode right now.

Updated the .h file to reflect the new PCI ID and recompiled. Updated bios.c to recognize BIOS signature. "M3". Tried all four combinations of the two flags with the PCI IDs.

Every time I boot with the driver I get a blank screen with no activity.

Console/syslog contains information that seems correct. Will forward privately if needed.

Any clue where to start to make the current driver work quickly?

I have a call into ATI for the datasheets - I can fix once I get those.

Thanks!

It seems that there is an issue with i845-based motherboards. If you have such a board and found a way to get the driver working (some reported that installing Euan's patched driver and changing resolution there fixed it) please mail me, so I'm sure that it really is the motherboard that makes the trouble and not an installation. I have the feeling that there are two problems with the driver: one with first-time installation and another one with i845-based motherboards. Thank you.

PS: some wrote me that they haven't trouble with other graphics cards, but this is not a reliable hint that it's not the motherboard as the Radeon driver uses bus-mastering which most other graphics driver don't (AFAIK).

I put together a brand new PC:

Pentium 4 2.4 533 MHZ FSB
512 megs PC 2700
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro/GeForce Ti 200
ANTEC 400W PSU
MSI 645DX MB SiS Chipset
60 Gig ATA 100 Maxtor
AMIBIOS ver. 3.1

OK, I have updated my PC to service pack 1, I have updated the SiS agp drivers, and I also used 2 different video cards (Radeon 9700 Pro, GeFroce Ti 200) to test this.
I downloaded the latest Radeon drivers and NVIDIA drivers, but my pc still reboots when graphics are being loaded before gameplay. The system is very stable otherwise. The pc is not being overclocked at all and the BOIS is run at fail-safe mode.
Quake 3 crashes everytime it loads, Battlefield 1942 crashes during map loading and so on. I took everything out of my pc except the vid card, and it still occurs.
Anybody have any ideas, please post or email me. Thanks a lot. Oh yea, one more thing ...whne windows is loading, it seems to delay after choosing what OS you want to run. Any ideas ?

Thomas,

I can't be the only one in this position, I'd love to get you the syslogs, but I don't think the event is getting written there. Also the problem is that its total lock-up - maybe the write is getting lost with BeOS's journaling?

Anyhow, can you give all of us a guide on how to get you some debug output to help you out, because you're doing a great job!

Cheers

first of all thank you for your work!
Now, the problem, it's very similar to what has been reported by others: when I try to change resoultion, refresh rate, or use a full screen app, my monitor goes blank and shows a message like "refresh rate out of range", showing rates like "40 Hz" or "200 Hz" and such...
The monitor is a Sony E430.

Hope this helps

Thomas: my Radeon card doesn't have a DVI or analog output for a second monitor - so it was probably not terribly important for ATI to test if the BIOS reports this properly. I would send you my syslog output, but as I already stated: I don't see any messages from the Radeon driver in there (debug output is enabled).

Specs for my machine:
Dual-P3, 512MB RAM, Monitor is connected to the Radeon 32 DDR via analog BNC cable (no DDC).
