Radeon 7200 - same here

I get the same blackness... Some BeOS installs it happens, sometimes it doesn't on the same hardware.

By the way, anyone else using a dual cpu machine with this driver? It may be a spinlock issue.

stamptv / overlays / problems with mode switches

Current version when comment was posted: v3.2.2
There seems to be a bug in the graphics card BIOS of some Radeons: they report an VGA-monitor connected to the DVI port though there is none. In the end, the overlay containing the TV-signal of stamptv is shown on the non-existing monitor, leaving an empty window on the real one. Solution is to choose "Swap Displays" in Radeon Screen Preferences. If this doesn't help, send me your syslog (and if you have a digital camera, a screen shot would be nice for verification as well). In terms of a blank screen after mode switches, this is probably a installation issue that seems to be uncorrelated to the graphics card. The only thing I can say is: please send me your syslog. Just knowing that something goes wrong doesn't give me any hint. Thanks.

Problems with Radeon 7200?

I'm using this driver with my Radeon 7200 64mb SDRAM

Whenever I try to make any changes in the Radeon Screen Preferences panel, the screen just goes totally black.

Is there an issue with this driver and my card?

I have esox's troubles as well

I have a Abit Vp6 motherboard (VIA chipset) and a late-model Radeon AnW 32MB DDR (as in I just bought it a couple months ago direct from ATI).

Hope this is fixed.. can't use Workspaces till it is!!! ;-(

I may find myself switch between drivers.. though Overlay is moreimportanty than workspaces at times, I am a heavy user of multplie resolutioned workspaces during web-development.

I also had this problem with stampTV. It is releated to the overlay support in the driver. To get rid of it I changed stampTVs source code:

Look for the line that contains

#define TRY_OVERLAY 1

in the file VideoConsumer.cpp.

Change the 1 to 0 and rebuild stampTV. The problem should be fixed.

With your driver, stamp tv does not work correctly, even with overlay. I have an AiW Radeon pci id 5144.

The tv signal in the window is distorted, but it work fine with that other guys driver.

Also the screen goes black when a program tries to go full screen.

I'm sitting on an VIA Pro133Z chipset MB with two P3@1000 Mhz and 512 Mb RAM. The Radeon, is an early AIW 32 Mb DDR model.
Everytime I try to change resolution or change desktop to one with other resolution, my screen goes black and doesn't come back. The monitor goes into power saving mode and nothing happens.......
Everything works as a charm with the leaked Radeon, aside from the disturbing fact that it doesn't do overlay.

I was talking to Thomas about this also.
I just upgraded my system to a 2.4b cpu etc, and now my Radeon 9000pro does the same thing.
(it worked fine in my old system)

I know it's not a PSU issue nor temp related.
My case is running 4 80MM fans (2 up front and 2 at the back) plus the 2 inside the PSU itself.

I suspect it's something with the i845E chipset.
And this is conflicting with something in the driver.
Thats my 2cents anyways :)
Further more, the system works with an old geforce card.

Hi. Thanks for your post. I dont think that my problem is temperature related. My CPU is about 50C and the case temperature is about 40C or so. The video card is running at standard speeds (no overclocking.) Also the system is perfectly stable when just using the built-in black and white video driver but as soon as I switch to this Radeon driver, it becomes very unstable. Please follow-up with me if you have any ideas. I love BeOS and want to run it on this system. Thanks!

Some problems in 32-bit overlay yet

Intel Celeron, 1GHz @ 1GHz, 512MB PC-166 SDRAM @ 150 (multiplier hack) ATI Radeon AnW 32MB DDR

In overlay, I now get some artfacting at the top of the screen (top 1/10th) and the mouse cursor becomes large and square (like 64x64 and corrupt).

If I restart it cures, but after playing several movie clips or movies in Overlay (VLC / MediaPlayer) this will occur.. but only when creating a new overlay... May have occured first when running two videos in overlay at once.

i met similar complaints in our BeOS-forum.
It appeared that it was too hot inside case - both CPU and Radeon GPU were about 70 Celsius when monitor switched off.

Doesn't seem to work well for me

I'm running this driver on a P4 1.9 with a Radeon 64 DDR. The driver installs and BeOS comes up in color. However, it's only a matter of time before my monitor turns off. If I grab a window and drag it around the desktop, this will trigger the monitor turning off. Anybody have any tips? I'd love to get this to work.

Fixed the problem too fast man..

mjw,

I had problems similar to the ones you listed when I tested the driver out on a spare R5 install I have - namely, the screen would flash to black when I told it to change resolution/colour depth, and just stay that way. Or it would come back, but corrupted.

When I installed it to my primary BeOS partition, I found that the easiest way is to just use one of the other Radeon drivers (included in the OpenGL beta, or the one that was leaked to Rage3d.com - the latter is fairly easy to find on BeShare). Set your preferred resolution and colour depth with that drive installed, then install this one and it should use the same settings.

Okay, I made a little progress:
After manually editing the file "config/settings/app_server_settings", I finally got overlay working.

But I still have problems with the Screen preferences panel and applications switching to fullscreen mode: changing a screen setting causes BeOS to hang. This happens without a detour to KDL - only the Reset button helps in this situation.

I just tried that. It worked somewhat better until I installed Opentracker. This caused BeOS to hang during boot. I had to go back to the original Tracker and install the old Radeon driver to rescue the installation.

Btw, your card is the DDR version of mine, (now identified in Winblows as a 7200)

Great work Thomas, the overlay support is a welcome addition!

I have one of those early Radeons without a number (Radeon DDR 32MB = 0x1002/0x5144). I encountered several problems with this driver:

- Overlay does not work at all (I see only a large gray area).

- Changing something in the screen preferences panel (doesn't matter if I change frequency, resolution or depth) always results in a black monitor.

I also checked the syslog - the driver doesn't seem to output anything there (debug output is enabled). If you tell me where to look, I can probably provide more useful information for getting those issues fixed (just drop me an email).

For the time being I went back to the original Radeon driver (works fine except for overlay).

Hi Topical!
Thank you very much for the driver and the important update with Overlay, now I can watch DVD movies with smother display and nice text.

On my Laptop Radeon Mobility 4c59 multisupport doesnt work.
I tried to connect my monitor to the output on the card, and tried to use the built in Monitor. The built in monitor flickers enourmously, but I can see that is displaying the colors (If I change between different workspaces).
Do you have any idea what wrong, and yes.. i turned of the computer ,and pluged in the other monitir and booted.
For me is doesnt matter right now, but it might do for you?
Regards!
/Konrad

Thomas, I'm also having problems after installing the 3.0 driver on a fresh BeOS install. My card is a stock Radeon 32 SDR (1002/5144). This driver works fine on my other install which had the old Be Radeon drivers.

If I change resolution, colour depth or refresh rate the screen goes black or corrupted.

The drivers for the existing ATI products are different enough from new 9xxx series that ATI doesn't have an "integrated" driver to cover both. Unless Thomas can get specifications from ATI for the new cards (unlikely at the moment) there won't be a driver in BeOS for them.

Radeon 32 DDR (Modded LE) causes problems

Excellent effort on this driver. From what I can see, it looks good. Except, when I try to change screen resolutions, the resolution changes, but the windows that were open are only ghosts. I can see my mouse moving around but I can only see the edges of the windows. The blue background for the desktop is only blue in the space that was the original resolution - i.e. if I go from 640x480 to 1024x768, there is a square of the blue background in the upper left corner that is about 640x480 pixels.
The graphics card I have is an original R100 series. It started out in life as a poor little Radeon LE, but it has been slightly modified (read: BIOS flashed) to change clock speeds and etc to be a Radeon 32 DDR.
PCI Probe tells me that the Vendor ID of the card is (0x1002) ATi Technologies, Inc. and the Device ID is (0x5144) (null). Under the "add-in card present" heading, the device ID is (0x8a) (null), and the Vendor ID is identical.
Thanks!

I sure hope not but it seems like some do. Guys are buying up these new cards & then going aw crap it's not supported... I see people asking all the time.. "Hmm should I buy a GeForce 4 for my BeBox?" So ya like I say if your running a dual boot go hard blow your cash, but if your running Be only don't waste your time. A comment a few back talks about poor picture quality with cheap cards. Sure but who notices most times. I have seen people with incredible systems & also running Geforce 4's with these OLD IBM PS1 monitors 13" viewable... realy dumb imo. I just want to make it known to those who haven't clued in these are better alternatives unless your rich. If your rich & want to waste money I can use some ;) The point is if you want dual montiors & quality picture buy a Matrox G400 dual head. I doubt your going to drop $600 on those. Some hunting should turn up quality cards like that for at least $100 or so for those who want to say a cheap *MB ati will have crappy components & thats a savings of a few 100$$$ at least. So to wrap this up Saving Money good - Trendy Crap Bad... BeOS GOOD! Sending Jess Money GOOD... Class dismissed ;)

I don't mind to pay hard bucks for my BeOS box. Low priced cards do have poor video quality (RF filters and other "analog" components are just shit), lack DUAL output (you can use DUAL with some NVidia cards aswell under BeOS), don't have DVI outputs.

And I'm not talking about graphics only.....
I pay hard bucks for other components just for my "Be experience" (Wacom tablet, multimedia keyboard with USB hub, BeOS compatible printer, etc)

AFAIK ATI hasn't released any spec concerning Radeon 9xxx. Meanwhile, I cannot tell whether support is possible (read: depends on whether the chip is similar enough to previous Radeon models).
