Some Athlon 64 boards have this GPU integrated. I'm thinking of getting an MSI RS480M2-IL* but I'm also hesitent due to questionable BeOS support.

Can't get the driver working on my Dell Inspiron 9200, not with USB IRQ fix and/or AGP Bus Manager. It hangs on starting the Desktop showing a garbled version of the bios-screen. Almost all devices seem to share IRQ 11, and I have no way of correcting that.

the driver doesn't work with my fujitsu Amilo-A laptop. The system freezes shortly after the end of the boot process, as described already various times in the talkback. I read most of the comments and obviosly there were already people who solved the problem and got their displaydriver to run. But tricks as disabling the USB Legacy support or booting zeta from win98 dont't work for me. Is there something additional to do than installing the 5.1 driver and removing the old ones?
Which config files are "useful" to edit. Sorry I'm not very involved in the matter.
Thanks for any help!

Is there any way this driver could support the ATI FireGL series? (Or, specifically, the FireGL X1). I only wonder this because I know that under Linux, the same driver can power both the Radeon and the FireGL series cards. It would be very nice if I can get this card to work fully under BeOS. The generic BeOS drivers make the GUI look awful (i.e. very slow and sticky).
Or, at least, does anybody have any idea how it might be hacked to provide such support?
I realize that it is pretty useless to run BeOS with this graphics card (since 3d acceleration is not possible with the radeon drivers) but I don't want to buy another card just for this. I am currently dual booting with Windows.

There is only one driver for Be so if you have tried many your in the wrong place. This site houses software for the Be OS NOT Windows, Catalyst are the best for any Radeon if you want stability, performance you can try the omega but if your card doesnt perform like you want with the catalyst your SOL.

Long ago changes to the screen prefs were applied very fast. The last version I used before 5.1 was 3.xx. But now I have to wait some time before the screen shows some reaction after pressing "apply", even the boot process takes some time at its last step (I think it's where the radeon driver gets initiated). Someone else who thinks that something got pretty slow in the new version(s)?

Thanks for the heads up. I just had my distributor, who is too stupid to read an invoice correctly, send me to PowerColor Radeons when I specifically requested OEM Sapphires, needless to say I sent them back. Good to know they still suck though. I had started to wonder if they got their act together since the quality of cards I had seen in the past where so far below acceptable it was unreal. I figured surely they would have gone out of business if they continued to be that bad. I guess not, frankly I find it amazing, I mean there are bad cards out there but Power Color cards I have personally seen & used astound me at just how bad they are.

Powercolor==bad cards
Club3d isn't a good one, by the way, but powercolor is the worst! I bought a 9600, which resulted to be 9600LE on the PCB (the card was announced in the box as plain 9600). LE means 64bit memory, instead of 128(R9600) or 256(R9700,R9800...).

I've never had an issue with them, I just tossed a Sapphire 9600 Atlantis Pro in a Athlon 64 machine about a week ago & Half Life 2 looks pretty damn good with it's 6x AA. If your a real visual nut though & would want to run 6x AA & high res go with something more powerfull then the 9600 but the Sapphire card ran it very well.
If you want a card to stay away from, stay away from Power Color. Now giving them a possible benifit of the doubt the company might have turned things areound but power color makes the worst cards I've ever seen. I'm not talking bad 3D either, I'm talking my desktop looks like it's under water! The screen has this defective LCD look to it when running power colors on any of my systems on any monitor, truly horrible.

Jess: You are correct that such a card would be major overkill for BeOS. I am dual booting and just wanted to make sure that whatever card I bought would work for BeOS as well.
Jess: Thanks for your answer. You said you sell both Sapphire and ATI Radeon cards. Do you have anything bad to say about Sapphire?
(I am thinking about getting a Sapphire Radeon card since it is cheaper than ATI's...as long as Sapphire would work on BeOS. Thus my question.)

Clearly this card is overkill for BeOS, but it's all I've got on my machine, which I would like to dual boot. Any help would be appreciated!

Radeon is Radeon, Sapphire is just one of the many makers of ATI Radeon based cards but unless your dual booting I'd have to ask why you blew $200 on a higher end Radeon for an OS that does not have any hardware 3D support?
Either way yes Be will run your Sapphire brand Radeon just fine, infact I sell nothing but ATI retail & Sapphire based ATI cards.

Does anyone know whether this driver will work with Sapphire Radeon cards? Educated guesses regarding the theoretical, as well as experience, are both welcomed.
My first guess would be that this driver would work with them, but when it is $200 of my money, I'd like to be as sure as possible. :-)
(And YES, I'm talking about BeOS! lol.)

where do you get the 128bits from? It doesn't actually mean anything! Even pre-radeon cards can be 128-bit!
Is your card one of the following:
rage pro
rage 128
or
Radeon 64
Radeon 7200
Radeon 7500
Radeon 8500
Radeon 9000
Radeon 9100
Radeon 9200
Radeon 9500
Radeon 9550
Radeon 9600
Radeon 9700
Radeon 9800
Radeon 9850
Radeon X800
etc...
If you can tell us the PCI ID of the card. You can do this by checking the device propertie in either the bios, windows device manager, or beos device manager. The manufacturer ID is 1002 followed by a 4 character code for the device id. EG "4929".

I have Zeta and BeOS Max v3.1b, and with the version 5.1 driver, my system will hang. Well, the OS will load, but the display freezes, and produces a white haze, and you can't see anything...
I have a radeon mobility 7500, 64mb of ram.
There seems to be at least 2 other people with the problems:
http://www.yellowtab.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=3003
http://www.yellowtab.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=2993
Zeta RC1's driver works fine.
I've tried drivers backwards from 5.1, and found (from the versions on BeShare I found) that the problem occurs after version 3.2.8.
thnx

That's what I was talking about! MenuetOS uses bitmap format very similar to DIB (I meant RR is 1 byte, GG is another one byte etc.) but data in bitmap is unaligned (in DIB it's aligned to DWORD boundary). In other words, the format is unaligned RGB888.

When copying the application buffer you can either write each pixel directly into video framebuffer, or convert and copy to a temporary system ram buffer where you could probably use a standard bltblt. So there's two tasks convert pixels to correct format. Find where to put pixel. Converting a 16-bit RGB565 to 32-bit RGB888 should be straight forward to you. Scale each 5 or 6-bit component to an 8-bit value (or it will be very dark!). And secondly copy to the video card.
If you want to write each pixel directly (slowest method I assume) then you would loop along each row of the source converting to the new format, then copy to the framebuffer's physical address. You need to consider that the video framebuffer may not be contiguous, and that at the end of each row of pixels there is a dead area that is used to keep the framebuffer aligned to a power 2. This is for memory copy efficiency purposes etc. So after each row you have to add on the size of the "pitch" to find the first byte of the next row. I think that's the correct terminology BTW.
Typically to prevent this conversion problem, applications will always use a standard pixel format. For example, win32 uses DIB (device independant bitmaps), the driver is then therefore responsible for the format conversion. In other cases, you can pass the pixel format type as a function variable, or in a bitmap header structure.
Questions? Corrections? Maybe one day I'll get a chance to actually write a driver. :) lol...

Hi again, Euan.
Another question so far. How could i realize putimage-like function i.e. copying data from application' memory to screen with known image size (width/height) and screen coordinates to put it to (x/y). The main problem here I think is that MenuetOS works with raw image data i.e. image is byte-array containing red/green/blue color values: RRGGBBRRGGBBRRGGBB etc.
