I love you

Anyone have any suggestions how can I bring to life my onboard Intel 8280 (ICH2) sound device? The board is D845WN, the full name of the device is Intel 82801BA I/O Controller Hub (ICH2).

First off I'd like to thank you for your work on this.
Secondly I'd like to say I gotta shut down & put my sound
card back in. The audio quality is pretty harsh still...
at least on an SIS735. Dunno how it is on the other chipsets.
So Deskbar > Shutdown > Here_I_Come!

asking for realtek ALC650 support

My motherboard has a Realtek ALC650 audio codec (AC97). The current driver doesn't support it. How difficult it is to add support for it in the next release ?

Specs are available at http://www.realtek.com.tw.
A linux driver (with source code) is also available at the same web site.

VT82C686A / VIA support

I have a VT82C686A in my laptop as well and the "ICH AC97 Driver" doesnt support VIA AC97. I tried to email the author to see if he would be willing to provide me with the source so I could "attempt" to add support for VIA's super southbridge chipset, but my email was bounced because his inbox is full. I realize that via's implementation of the AC Link commands may be quite a bit different but I'd like to give it a whirl. so if anyone knows the author or has the source to the driver I'd appreciate getting the source / info passed along to me.

I have never installed BeOs before today. I downloaded PE 5 and upgraded to 5.0.3 and have no problem with my Via sound card. I also have a BT878 Video capture card and it works without me adjusting any settings either.

First you need to get install BeOS and then get rid of Windoze ME.

Am I stupid, or can you give me a clue to proceed ?

Uh I was being funny. I plainly state that I do not have any more advice & cracking & rewiring the amp & speaker section was silly. While it SHOULD be common knowledge that we dont have to state every post to email the author some of us have become null to that idea since we'll email an author & never get a response. Sad but true.

Talkback and emails and dual outputs
 By MarcusOverhagen - Posted on August 30, 2002 - 14:46:10   (#2917)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.4
The correct fix for problems like those of adamk is not to open the laptop and change wires.
The best way is to email the author of the driver and kindly ask if the problems can be fixed.
I already have enabled an additional aux output in the driver, but not published it yet, because only one person has tested it. There are also unresolved problems with enabling/disabling an external amplifier in notebooks, because I rarely get feedback telling me if a change I made really helped.
So please, contact me by email, tell me what doesn't work, and I can send you something to test that my resolve those problems.

ahh!

Well then the fix is easy! Open the puppy up & wire your speakers to the same connections as the head phones ;)or just run some wire from the head phone jack internaly to the speakers. While you probably wont do anythign silly like this if you DO you probably want to make a switch as once you plug the head phones in with out a switch it will run head phones & speakers. This means if your using head phones to be quiet it's a lost cause & also the OHM impedance my suck your volume down to nill. Other then the physical jerry rig I'm out... heh the hack'n slash is the only thing I can think of anyway.

Hey I'm not framiliar with the system your using but I have a question for you. You say the audio only goes to your head phones & no the speakers. This makes me wonder if you have 2 audio outs. If so BeOS will only use one so you have to pick one or the other. Another funny thign would be that you dont have 2 audio outs but still have to devices plugged into it. heh. But there are alot of possibilites... you could also have a speaker set that has a head phone jack on them. blablabla lots of possibilities but make sure you have things plugged in & remember you can select only one out - 'specially with such a new driver all the features will not be intact or solid

FYI,

The driver seems to work pretty well on my Compaq Presario 2700. The only issue is that all the audio is output through my headphones, and nothing goes to the speakers. In addition, there doesn't seem to be anything on the mixer would would seem to remedy this problem.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Hey all BeBits staff!!! heh PLEASE add a disclaimer on the main page & possibly in the scheme that denotes how each apps page is set up to clearly say not for windows or only for the Be OS. It's great we get the exposuer from searches when people are looking for drivers but this help with windows crap is getting really tire some. We could ignore it but while we semi flood our own talkback sections with flames & This is not for windows messages, even if we gave no response to these questions at all, we are still getting quite a large number of them so maybe we need to make BeBits a tad more clear about it's content & purpose. This is horribly worded but you get the picture. How about using the lame old joke that I used in my last post... "BeBits - Uh we don't do Windows... Software for the BeOS"

You should run BeOS. Then run the DOS emulator from here on BeBits (not sure of name).

It has sound, and interfaces with the world's fastest multimedia system (BeOS Media Kit). And of course, we have the driver for your 'card' ;-)

You can download BeOS for free, from here. It is a *MERE* 45MB download!! Though with Be's awesoem technologies (now PalmSource's) it expands to over 500MB! Installing inside either Linux, MacOS, or Windows.. there is no need to repartition. With WinME you will need to make a boot floppy (done during install).

AC97 in DOS??

I've been trying to find a device driver for my Intel AC97 which I wish to use in DOS. I have an MSI 6339 motherboard with the built-in chipset. I've considered looking into using workarounds by using high-compatibility SB drivers, or maybe a generic MPU401 driver. I'm using Windows ME, which I've used to create a boot disk to allow access to DOS. I've also considered using a DOS emu through Linux, which may be a possibility? I've searched high and low for a compatible driver so if anyone knows of one, or is capable of compiling a driver I'd appreciate any nudges in the right direction!

On my duron 1000, it still takes 15% to play

and the sound still sounds like "downsampled"...

It is faster now. For playing musique with CL-amp it tooks me 3.3% of CPU activity for CL-amp itself and 2.6% for the media service (1.4 for the driver and 1.2 for the mixer).
My CPU is an Athlon TBird 900MHz with 256Mo PC100.
So welldone your driver is so helpful...

It's me again :)

I've noticed a bit more precisely the other issue
(apart from the problem of speed) : it seems
lower frequencies are especially distorted
(like downsampled).

Anyways it's extremely visible on certain types of
musics, but much less on others...

Has anyone noticed that ?

You cannot have no program running, there must be some stuff running in the back.
In my case the CPU activity was quite high and the sound not very clear when I was under BeOS DevEd 5.0.4 but since I am under PhOS, I have no pb (the activity is very low, so normal and don't bother my othre apps now, so it is ok for me).
I can't tell if the first problem (not perfect sound, too high CPU usage) came from the driver or other problem.
Since this is ok now I assume the drivers are very good and works perfectly for me. I think the problem comes from elsewhere.
btw PhOS is the new name for superDANO. It is release (illegal btw) derivated from DANO with more stability and comptability. Have a look here http://looncraz.tripod.com/phos. You will have information on what is phos. You can download it in beshare (from me for example when I'm online).
I had some difficulties with the IDE driver, but since it is ok for me I think it is the best versoin of BeOS, it is nice to use, stable and for the first time I can watch my DVD with a DVD quality, watch my divx, it has BONE... great release

What is phOS ?

Can you just do a 'top' under the shell
with no program running and tell me the %cpu
used, to compare with me ?

In my case (duron 1000) with NO program active
it varies from 4.5 to 7% !!

Thanks for the answers !!

But I have to admit that now it works just well. I've just installed phOS with the driver for my soundchipset and it works well, no CPU overload, no little sound, it is ok now
