cpu usage

You can change the priority of the application in Advanced rendering settings (set it to NORMAL instead of HIGH)

Of course it will slow the things a bit, but will release resource for other applications.

The application requires a fast CPU - in fact developed on a P3 1Ghz CPU)

(Since there is no 3d acceleration,). You can use the full screen mode (using BWindowScreen).

works fine on 400 celeron but..

it maxes out the puny cpu so bad it's hard to shut it down, i had to kill it with the process controller(which barely worked due to the system being so exhausted)very cool tho...maybe you should try to make it less system draining!!
3D starchart is every bit as cool but does'nt drain my resources nearly as bad, although i really like the aspect of being able to stand on earth and look into the sky that this app provides as well as the real time part so you can see what is out there right now!

In display options, choose BWindowscreen as renderer, press Apply, quit application (yes) and restart. You will get fullscreen.

PPC version

Yes, actually, the MacOS classic is being ported (should be released next week) - PPC 603/233Mhz minimum)

But for a BeOS/PPC, it's a bit harder (my PPC machine is an iMac, and BeOS cannot be installed on it)

PPC?

What about PPC Version?

I thing your engine was once portet to ppc too, or am i wrong?

Oh, btw...

All try location Munich/Germany, 11th August 1999 around 12h 37min :) That was a eerie moment I hope to always remember...

BTW, why doesn't the lightning in spaceview fit? I hoped to see the moon's shadow... :)

Ey, cool!

Wow, what a fun app! Wished BeOS had decent HW acceleration...
Anyway, it'd be cool if you could enter your home's coordinates manually. Pointing with the mouse on the map isn't that precise... I'm lucky if I hit the state where I live :)

Very nice demo! Will we see more demos with that engine?

re: windows version

go to http://realtech-vr.com/skytools.

There is a version for Windows and also for Windows CE.

The windows version has 3d acceleration (opengl 1.3 or direct3d 8.1), so of course, it's faster.

But if we compare the software renderer mode Windows vs BeOS, the BeOS version is a bit faster. Also there is a driver in /lib/experimental. copy it back to /lib and it will use BDirectWindow instead of BWindow and will render faster. Only works correctly if your desktop is also in 32bpp.

Windows version?

I tried the BeOS version: cool! But I'd like to see how fast is the Windows version. Where can I download it?
Thanks a lot

Na you dont have to...

you dont have to patch it. I just think it would be cool to try... suddenly I feel like a PPC user... :(

~/guess I'll delete it

I am using RC2 right now. And it's fun and pretty usable (on dual Celeron 533). Cool app. Thanks!

System required

Skytools VR needs at least a Pentium II processor with Pentium Pro extensions : here the full explanations:

Because the engine use the Pentium Pro CMOV instruction and MMX used during rasterizing (which improve about +5%,+10%).

Also the program has be compiled with gcc 2.95 with -march=ppro.

AMD K6/2 does not support CMOV instruction, so during the initialisation, the program check the CPUID and looks for the CMOV flags. if not present, the program exits (else, you will have a crash on illegal instruction during rendering).

The programs runs in 800x600x32bit, process a starfield of up to 16000 point, renders planets from 1500 to 6000 polys, gouraud shaded, bilinear filtered texture mapped with no 3d acceleration, and do complex calculations (in double floating point) to computes planets positions.

If you need a try anyway, I can provide you a version, Pentium only as a patch (based from the Ipaq version). I will prepare that.

note & a question...

First thing I woud like to note is that the application will not replace or create a new "Registry" file if you remove the old one at least it wont on my machine & this may be due to the Quoestion part of this post... will it not replace the file simply cuz it wants to bail due to the cpu... my cpu
/*
SHOULD
*/
have MMX but I have had other MMX applications fail to see the MMX on my cpu. My system spec is:
cpu: AMD k6-2 550
Ram: 768mb pc100 clocked to a 2 cas latency
video: ATI Rage 2C

blablabla heh hope my cpu isnt the problem...

Delete your old version, upload RC2, delete the
registry.dat in config/settings/Realtech and try again.
Of course, in case of pb, give the terminal output.

Now everything is fixed (due to a stupid bug in package).

RC3 will only fixes some minors bugs.

It's still dead - it will not create the registry.dat file to read from & will not run without it

Thats the best comment "Slower then Linux desktop speed" Ah com'on all those linux lovers that like waiting 10 seconds before the system shows any sign it's going to do something. heh ya so anyway I gues the fix will be up tomarrow so I hope to see it then...
- Jess

doesn't work here too

after first try it just crashed (something was on screen for a 10 miliseconds maybe, and than BeOS alert about crash). i used sc command and there was something about malloc IIRC.
second try crashed again. third and next show some black square and hide it (on deskbar i can see only "quit" item, no windows) but app eats processor time (whole BeOS slows down to worse-than-linux-desktop speed ;).

Uh nice?

Ok so I downloaded this & now come back to post that it dont work heh & it's "No longer available for download" ...nice heh? I tried to run it & got:

This program requires at least a Pentium Pro processor.

Hmm well last I check I thought my cpu was a tad faster then that heh.
