Can I blame someone (like the manufacturer) for my poor ripping endowment or is it just one of those things?

You probably ran into the situation where the CD wasn't really mounted anymore, in which case cdda-fs will give zero-filled files, but no error. You can get into a situation like this if you for example mount the CD, cd into it (or otherwise keep a file or folder busy), press the eject button, and then insert it again.

OS X does not have md5sum, and the version of the 'find'
command is not the right one. If you were to install md5sum
and the right version of 'find' though, it should be trivial
to adapt the script to work on OS X.

This is a cool script. I tried to run it on my Mac (OS X) in the terminal, but it gives me an error to the effect that it can't see the cd. Has anyone else tried this?

Failing the first test can mean several things. Once you've
cleaned the CD and blown the dust out of your CD drive, it
means this: the drive does not provide consistent results
when grabbing audio by copying the WAV files off the mounted
CD. You may still get good results by using a tool like
CDParanoia. Tweaking the buffersize and blocksize in the
settingsfile could also help.

Uh?

Testing sequential-read repeatability using first track: pass 2... FAILED. Drive is not suitable for audio grabbing.
No further testing performed (use -speedonly to force speed-test)
------

I don't understand. I've done plenty of ripping in the past. The drive is the Ricoh one from CDBurner's list. Well, not quite - the A is missing from the end of the name. Anyway, I'm confused. I'm also intrigued.
