stdout is a what

Standard Output (stdout) is a "What". You need to redirect it to a file if you want it to produce something you can see.

try something like this:

comamnd_producing_standard_output > ./test

where 'command_producing_standard_output' is the command you ran.

should redirect the output to a file called "test" in the current directory.

- add parameters for first and second pass
- add parameters for quality, size etc and
- output format.
Nice work so far.

It's not a bad idea to post working source archives of the libs, but what I wish for (just a wish) is that the source archive of an app also include the source of the libs, and that it all compiles on standard BeOS (R5 with/without BONE), preferrably without having to tweak anything. From a paranoia point-of-view, being able to compile the app but not the libs (using the pre-compiled ones) is not much comfort.

Anyway, thanks for your efforts! I look forward to trying DVDRip once I physically install my DVD-player. (no empty slots. ´:)

Hi SDO,

The "files -> one file" feature has been replaced by the ability to rip titles (usually, title 1 is the whole movie, title 2 is a bonus, etc). Maybe I should have added this to the FAQ too :|

There is no special requirements to pipe DVDRip to ffmpeg. Actually it works great on my system (5.0.3/BONE), I could encode several whole movies without a problem. I have seen strange behaviours of ffmpeg in the past when encoding from pipe on R5 so it may not work (it looks like it doesn't for you), I'll add this to the FAQ too. One-step encoding is not recommended on R5 yet.

Please keep sending feedback, I'll add nothing from now but what you asked me to add ;)

Great app, now it is time to make it better

Well, I realize from the sounds of things that the app has been rewritten, so the surface doesn't look or feel much different than say .5. However, 0.4 does have a feature that is nice, and that is files -> one file. Here are my suggestions...

1. Show the file sizes in the filename list.
2. Allow combining .vobs into a resulting .vob, for instance 1_1-1.4, and not like you did in 0.4, where you assumed that anything from 1_1-1_X was the ONE file to combine. Take the multi/selection and combine them, offer that option, very useful.

Also, your assumptions about what is installed on the users system is erroneous. It is my understanding that vhook is required to process pipe input in the ffmpeg. That is not standard install, and nowhere on your 'script' do you mention this... If this is true that vhook is required for ffmpeg to work in pipe, and that vhook requires 'libmoreposix' and that is rather unstable, then how can you give suggested commandlines that don't work (they don't on my system) in the FAQ? It would seem these are not FAQ answers at all, just creating more questions as to why your distrobution doesn't work the way it is documented.

Keep on trying, this application is very desperatly needed in teh BeOS community, and also it is desperately needing to be finished and polished.

Thansk again!

SDO

libdvdread, ffmpeg

I don't really remember how I built libdvdread (I'm using the same build since a long time ago), but you should have a look at this patch: <http://www.videolan.org/pub/vlc/0.5.0/contrib/patch-libdvdread-win32.diff>. It disables dlopen's use, which is the only compile issue on BeOS as far as I remember. Do you want me to post a clean libdvdread release at Bebits ?

The Ffmpeg build I made available is MMX-enabled, and includes the a52 decoder (via a52dec) and an mp3 encoder (via lame). It does not use an external libavcodec.so, it is all statically built in it (your existing libavcodec.so will simply be ignored).

Good job on an app we definitely need.

Q1: Can you provide more info on the ffmpeg build? Is it a52 enabled? Is it mmx enabled? Seems pretty big, like all debug info is included.

Q2: Will this ffmpeg-BONE build work with the existing libavcodec.so? And if not, what should be done?

Thx.

The limit is 50 files, I didn't think many DVDs would have more files. I know there are a lot of bugs / lacking features in DVDRip, unfortunatly I had no time lately to fix this. I will rewrite it from scratch soon anyway, using a lot of code from the VideoLAN client; this should work better.

1) Ripping titles to a single file doesn't work

2) If VIDEO_TS directory contains many files, DVDRip causes a segment violation.

I tested the following DVDs:

- Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within DVD 2, R1, 68 files in VIDEO_TS = crash

- Resident Evil, R2, 64 files = crash

- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, R2, 51 files = crash

- Nightwish: From Wishes to Eternity, R2, 41 files = works.

So the limit seems to be somewhere between 42 and 50?

I only have 300 or so Mb of space on my BeOS partition. The first two VOP files were about 1Gb each so upon reflection I think I ran out of disk space.

DVDRip did not warn about this and somehow overwrote the open files. This may be a problem with Rip or with bfs. I can't tell.

Files disappearing while DVDRip is ripping

I was ripping some dvd files while working on my application with PE and the Metroworks IDE.

I noticed that rip did not get all of the last couple of files (the file size was 250Mb rather than 1023Mb). I tried these files again while my application files were open in another workspace. The files did not rip properly after three attempts so I went back to my application.

When I came to save some of my c++ files I got the message "OS error file cannot be found" and "No space remaining on device" or similar. Fortunately I resaved one of them but, not realizing what was going on, I did not resave the one I hadn't changed. This file was the top level class of my application. Loosing it is a major pain in the ****.

Two things: Does anyone have any tips on restoring a lost file?
And: A BIG WARNING about using DVDRip. There seems to be something wrong with the way it writes stuff to the disk.

I tried ripping my copy of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" (yes, I own it) with DVDRip and then tried to encode it via ffmpeg using instructions I've seen here. Here's the command I used:

ffmpeg -i VTS_01_[1-5].VOB -pass 1 -passlogfile LogFileName -f avi -vcodec mpeg4 -b 639 -g 300 -bf 2 -hq -acodec mp3 -ar 44100 -ab 96 CuckooNest.avi

Here's the messages I got:

No accelerated IMDCT transform found
No accelerated IMDCT transform found

Seems that stream 0 comes from film source: 29.97->24.47
Input #0, mpeg, from 'VTS_01_[1-5].VOB':
Stream #0.0: Video: mpegvideo, 720x480, 29.97 fps, 7500 kb/s
Stream #0.1: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, mono, 192 kb/s
Stream #0.2: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 192 kb/s
Output #0, avi, to 'CuckooNest.avi':
Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg4 (hq), 720x480, 24.47 fps, q=2-31, pass 1, 639 kb/s
Stream #0.1: Audio: 0x0000, 44100 Hz, stereo, 96 kb/s
Stream mapping:
Stream #0.0 -> #0.0
Stream #0.2 -> #0.1
Unsupported codec for output stream #0.1

Then it quits. What am I doing wrong?

Please substitute the word MPEG4 for OpenDivX.
Also, on the 2-pass example, 2nd pass, change the output filename to something different from the first pass output filename, otherwise you'll overwrite the first pass. (Only applicable if you care to keep the first pass).

This seems to be a talkback for DVDRip and ffmpeg, since the two go hand in hand. I spent some time practising different settings and came up with the following to share with you.

Source: MOVIE.VOB (DVDRip 0.3), Playtime:7,896 seconds, 720x480, Letterbox
Onto: OpenDivX.avi, 700MB Target (5,734,400 kbits), 640x320
Stream: 726 kbit (5,734,400 kbits/7,896 sec = 726 kbit/second)
Audio: 96 kbit mp3 stereo @ 44.1kHz
Video: 630 kbit (726 kbit total - 96 kbit audio)

First pass:

ffmpeg -i MOVIE.VOB -croptop 64 -cropbottom 64 -cropleft 12 -cropright 4 -s 640x320 -pass 1 -passlogfile LogFileName -f avi -vcodec mpeg4 -b 630 -g 300 -bf 2 -hq -acodec mp3 -ar 44100 -ab 96 OpenDivX.avi

Second pass:

ffmpeg -i MOVIE.VOB -croptop 64 -cropbottom 64 -cropleft 12 -cropright 4 -s 640x320 -pass 2 -passlogfile LogFileName -f avi -vcodec mpeg4 -b 630 -g 300 -bf 2 -hq -acodec mp3 -ar 44100 -ab 96 OpenDivX.avi

Keep in mind that all xy output values have to be multiples of 16. Also try to use multiples of 16 when cropping, but it is only required to crop in multiples of 2.

This particular movie is cropped 64 pixels from the top, 64 pixels from the bottom, 12 pixels from the left and 4 pixels from the right. Thus: 720x480 becomes 704x352, then resize to 640x320. Note that all values divide evenly by 16, to assure best picture quality.

VOB's use 48000kHz audio, but most mediaplayers prefer 44100kHz for mp3. Use "-ar 44100"

Also: In order to make it DivX5 compliant, use bframes. "-bf 2". Turn on high quality with "-hq"

The first pass will generate a one-pass DivX and "LogFileName-0.log" Delete this DivX once you have started the second pass.
You do not have to change the LogFileName for the second pass, since ffmpeg appends the "-0.log" to whatever you called it.

Enjoy!

gijsbert: I usually use the mapping feature of ffmpeg to demultiplex or multiplex files, it is a powerful toy.
For example: 'ffmpeg -i multilanguage.vob -f vob -vcodec copy -acodec copy monolanguage.vob -map 0:0 -map 0:x' takes the video track and the 'x' th audio track of multilanguage.vob and remultiplexes them into monolanguage.vob.

I should publish an updated ffmpeg on BeBits... I'll first mail the one who published the official release, no need to have 10 'ffmpeg' entries here.

Note ffmpeg can also encode to mp3 using libmp3lame.so (the net_server version I share isn't compiled with it... but you can compile it yourself, check the 'ffmpeg_beos_port' script I share, and don't take care of the ffserver error).

Note also you can use the -map option to tell ffmpeg which audio strea
