Re: Vital app, a question

You simply select "Show replicants" from the Tracker's menu. The replicant's handle will then appear on ProcessControler's replicant's icon. Right-click on it, and you'll have an option to remove it.
If that doesn't work, use the method described in the documentation to work around a Tracker bug.

As for the suggestion in the message 'feature idea':
I must admit that I don't see any new development on BeOS on my part. :-(

feature idea

many time i would like to have an app close itself for many reason after a while. It would be nice to have another choice than memory monitor and kill process that would be called "closing countdown".

In that place we would have a drop down menu for each team so we can decide when do we want to seend a BQuit bemessage to the app. A checkbox could be added to specify that if eventually the app don't want to quit it would be killed.

Vital app, a question

Congratulations, this app is absolutely essential and very well done.

I have one question, once I placed a replicant once on the tracker desktop, how can I get rid of it (or move it)?

Thanks a lot

Wouldn't it be great to have a seperate submenu under "Kill, Debug or Change Priority" called "Control System Services" ... and under that menu all the system servers were listed (app_server, net_server, etc) and you would be allowed to choose to close, kill or restart those services? I always find myself in terminal doing a "/system/servers/input_server -q" and think having the ability to restart common services would be a great feature for ProcessController.

Absolutely vital

I heard someone say that it really is possible to live without this app, but I beg to differ. Would delete my spleen before I deleted this app!

Essential

This utility should be included as standard with the OS. Most
users don't really want to open up a terminal just to see or
kill a process.

Best thing since swiss cheese

I've been using ProcessControler for as long as I can remember, and it still amazes me how wonderful it is. There's a reason it's there on the top ten list - and has been there since it was released. This tiny little app will sit up in the taskbar next to the clock with two bars displaying processor and memory usage, giving an overview of your system at a quick glance. They are even color coded, so if an app is using up resources like a hog, or leaking memory madly, you'll know. But the real fun begins when you click on it - up comes a menu allowing you to quit applications, kill applications, kill threads, change priorities, and anything else you would want to do. All in a very user friendly interface. It even shows memory usage by every application.
I find this app very hand for killing rough applications, or changing the prioritys to more reasonable levels - one app set itself to 'real time' priority by default, eating up all my CPU time, but a quick visit to Process Controller and it was back to a usable level.
In conclusion, I recommend this app for EVERYONE, regardless of what you use your computer for. Even if you don't use the more advanced features, you will find it handy.

Are you a coder? A beta-tester? A neat-freak who can't live without knowing the memory usage of an application?

This program is for you. There is no question in my mind that this is the best application of this type anywhere.

"Gee, looks like my app is losing 23k every time I hit this button. Maybe there's a memory leak!"

"Looks like support_thread isn't terminating correctly."

"I wonder what happens to the responsiveness of input_server if we up its priority to REALTIME_URGENT..."

"syslog_daemon is pissing me off today. Die, Daemon of Hell! Die!!!"

...all these phrases and more uttered while using ProcessController.

The only thing that would make it better would be if it made toast for me while I debugged.

Amazingly useful tool for development, aswell as super neat to look at.

One of the best Be applications around, this one has been in the top 10 charts for a _long_ time and with reason. It's been useful to me on several occasions, when writing code it helps finding threads that take too much time, or just making sure your application terminates correctly. Great to have when some unknown background task is gobbling processing power and you don't know what. Even the ability to open a Terminal window has saved me a couple of times. It even blends well into different genre's since when used as pure entertainment it provides good, clean and mostly unhealhty fun. Who wants to kill silly monsters when you can terminate threads arbitrarily? ;-)

Though other tools such as Slayer etc also gives more or less the same functionality, ProcessController takes the cake with it's easy of use, it's replicant abilities, and it's stunning look&feel which enables it to present alot of options and information using very little screen real-estate.

A serious must have for any Be user.
