Check out the new BeOS Max forums for any issues you may have. It has no files for download and BeOS Max is no longer being developed/supported, but it may serve as a more convenient place for Max users to ask and help out.

I recognize your frustrations but the simple anwser is; BeOS is not so popular (as Linux). I'd really like to know how many active online users there are who regularly use BeOS, I estimate there are no more then 200 such users. Maybe there are more Zeta users, try www.yellowtab.com or bittorrent ; )
mmadia thanks for the IRC info! Was looking for that, didn't expect to find it here : ) !

BeOS Max is *NOT* an official Be Inc., version of BeOS; it is created, maintained, and supported by a 3rd party who built it from BeOS PE (Personal Edition) http://bebits.com/app/2680
BeBits does not locally host files. It is simply a common place for developers to inform the public of BeOS software and for end users to leave comments for said software. As such, dead links are an unfortunate reality of not only this site, but the internet at large.
Here are some additional ways of finding "dead link" software:
-google the filename (viewable in the status bar while hovering the download button)
-log in to a BeShare* server using either
BeShare for BeOS: http://bebits.com/app/1330
JavaShare for any Java enabled OS: http://bebits.com/app/2795
-use the Interet archive: http://www.archive.org
*BeShare is a good place for getting answers for BeOS troubles. #beos and #haiku at irc.freenode.net is another good place for BeOS discussions.
Vision, http://bebits.com/app/2623 , is my personal choice for IRC software on BeOS.
And yes, the v3.1b zipfile served on the russian site is in english.

It is impossible to get the BeOS Max Edition from http://www.bebits.com/app/3148#download and/or from sourceforge.net; this is the summary of my message.
I also could have titled it : "is there also somebody working for Microsoft ?"
If you want to know why, read the following.
As your downloading buttons from the page http://www.bebits.com/app/3148#download, send to sourceforge.net (exceptiing the last one that connects to a site from Rusia, that starts immediately without any further complication, but from which the version offered could be in Russian maybe), I understood that I had to register to sourceforge.
Which I did, passing through a very long process, receiving, by e-mail a secured address through which I had to reconnect, extremly slowly, refill some other forms and eventually receiving the final confirmation.
Very long the whole process and complicated by the very slow secured connection.
Still, after all that I couldn't download the BeOS Max Edition from any of your buttons of the page http://www.bebits.com/app/3148#download (each sending to sourceforge, of course):
The buttons:
Primary - Download - V 2.1 and
Primary - Download - V 3.0
generated blank pages saying that "couldn't create the file";
even worse, the button named Multi - Part (RAR) Downloads denied my access (on sourceforge.net)saying that I am not allowed to access that page (for downloading), and all this after having logged properly and recognized as a user on their site;
The button BeArchive Team Mirror Project on your page is a dead link. I tried to report that but my password or user name (whatever) have not been "recognized"; I had to generate another pass, received it at my e-mail and afterwards, after many trials, I succeed in reaching this page ...
The only button that looked to function, by the mere process of downloading that starts immediatelly - as usually happens everywhere else on the net -, was that from Russia (but again, one does not know whether it is a Russian version only after 7-8 hours of downloading - maybe finally it is, as one should ironically expect).
In fact, why this difference: from the Russian site a direct download and in the case of the rest, such a complicated detour ? Is the Russian version less important, at least from a so-called security point of view ? Because it is in Russian (maybe) ?
What more/else to do then ?
Hope that you'll bring a necessary remedy to all this maybe ?
Confronted with all this strange behaviour of your site and politics of downloading, one can ask him/herslef a lot of questions ...
After wasting so much time an energy, I can not prevent from questioning: why all this complication and not an imediat starting download when the button is clicked (as the one from Russia) ? It is complicated ? I don't think so.
It looks that it is as if, it is not enough that this promissing OS (that "had a great future", as they say), knew such an injust and sad fate; to make things even harder, the mere access to it is made impossible ...
One could say that everything is as if it is done on purpose (or what ?) ...
Actually, is it so difficult to keep the BeOS Max Edition (or any other version) on a decent server for downloads that would start immediatelly ? A very modest PC could do that without problem ...
How is it possible for so many other sites to get the job done ? For instance, take a look at Kubuntu site, a distro of Linux, where everything is so easy, tidy, and maintained by only a person : http://www.linuxshop.de/shop/catalog/shipping.php?language=us
If it is more simple to sell the discs, like they do, at a modest price though, than just do so ... How come everything is possible for other similar Open source OSes, and just for yours not ? Don't they encounter difficulties too ?
As a fact, is it absolutelly necessary to pass the very simple downloading of a file to sourceforge, that imposes a very complicated process and making it, above all, impossible ?
Actually the whole problem comes down to this, really: DO YOU WANT THE PEOPLE TO OBTAIN AND KEEP ALIVE YOUR OS OR NOT ? Maybe you don't anymore ...
But if the answer is yes, then if not facilitate the process of obtaining it, at least simply don't put impossible barriers between it and those people of good will.
I visited a lot of forums concerning BeOS, believe me, and I met a lot of frustration concerning exactely this: the mere (im)possibiliy itself of getting this OS ...
Actually, are you not aware of this, don't you receive any feedback concerning this, or if such a feedback is received there, is there still somebody to read it ? And if the feedbacks are read, can you still do something about it anymore ? To make it possible for people who want to still get your BeOs I mean ...
Don't you think that encountering such difficulties any good will can give up at a certain point ? Is this that you want ? Or is this a test ?
What's the reason behind all this ? Is there a hidden strategy of the availability of your OS ?
Very, very pity, honestly.
A very dissapointed (has been) potential user of BeOS ...
Of course, I don't expect any answer from you, I just let my whole frustration, of a whole day, go, like this, no where ...

Just fiddling around with bochs and qemu one last time. yes I know I should find a old 1gb hard disk and boot and install but I found that when I tell QEMU to boot as a ISA only system it does the same thing as Bochs, gets to the disk icon and crashes. Can we have some ISA support added? Also QEMU crashes on 2nd to last icon. I think it is the boot floppy. I am downloading BeOS 5 PE and checking if the floppy boots it up into setup. I will post here if the IdeReplFloppy needs changing. Final note: When it gets to the last icon the debugger appears giving no errors. The only bit that might be useful is that it mentions the bootscript on the CD

You can still run PE on an Athlon XP, you will just have to boot with mmu_man's XP-enabled floppy disk, and then edit the kernel_intel file.
http://clapcrest.free.fr/revol/beos/AthlonXP_boot_floppy.zip
Or maybe you mean you can't do that because you have an XP NTFS drive and not FAT partitions.
If you want more help, I suggest taking the discussion to a forum (try www.begroovy.com), that's better for this kind of help than talkback.

If you have 500MB free on a windows FAT32 drive, you can run BeOS natively without any repartitioning - just try it with PE.
Playing with BeOS through an emulator completely misses the whole feel of the BeOS experience.

PE had very unagressive drivers for older hardware - Max Edition may or may not be using the IDE Replacemnt Driver which is probably to agreessive (fast) for Bochs, and other drivers may be doing the same
Bochs sucks, QEMU sucks, VMWare sucks. BeOS is just about usable in VPC but its not enjoyable. Use it on REAL HARDWARE.

I've been playing with emulation a bit today (in windows). Managed to get QEMU to run BeOS in grayscale VESA, slow, and with no sound.
QEMU command line:
qemu.exe -L "C:\Program Files\Qemu\bios" -boot a -m 32 -fda "C:\Program Files\Qemu\R5 Distro\floppy.img" -hda "C:\Program Files\Qemu\R5 Distro\image.be" -localtime
I really don't know why anyone would choose to run BeOS in this way, but there ya go. I'm playing a bit with bochs now.

It is impossible to change the speed of it from the bios. All you can do is change the IPS. The bios has no setup screen. It doesn't need it because of the config file. If anyone has got it running on Bochs and want to see the congig then just ask!

It is STILL im bochs
I have just topped the speed settings to 10000000 instructions per second and still no luck. It is not in safe mode (but I have tryed that and no luck) and when I start it up from Windows emulated and using the original PE) it just goes to the floppies and crashes trying to mount the image with the boot script and shell. I am not going to use VPC as it costs a heap (and my trial has already expired). If someone could give me the settings for QEMU it would be great. (Note to anyone who has slowness under bochs. Use QEMU as it is fast for REACTOS)

Try holding down space during the boot and making sure the boot volume is selected as the CD.
The "bug" is more likely to be in Boch's CD emulation IMHO.
