BeOS Max link problem

Unfortunatelly the Sourceforge page has been deleted because of a "good will" anonymous poster that convinced them the distro was illegal. We are working to fix it, and also searching for alternative ways to distribute. Currently BeOS Max can be found on BeShare (unizone if you have windows) and emule. Search for BeOS5PEMaxEditionV3.zip or BeOS5PEMaxEditionV31b1.zip

http://wiki.bebits.com/page/InstallingOnAthlonXPorMP has a lot of info on AMD's XP,MP,Mobile and Duron7 that all have the sse problem. The reason you have to edit is because the AMD reports as an INTEL. So a simple edit to the kernel_intel file fixes it. You can disable SSE other ways but you really want SSE so edit it.
Now the P4 patch is a problem with first gen P4's that usually have rambus memory. The new die size P4 usually only needs "don't call bios" safe mode option.

MAX and BONE

Why do you replace GenuineIntel if it is Intel:)
After BONE installation, if that partition is still available for you from another BeOS, try following.
look into
/boot/beos/system/kernel_intel.patch
and
/boot/beos/system/lib/libroot.so.patch
and replace there all "_pIII" to "_default"

Ok but for Bone and Athlon ?

i try to replace the "genuineIntel" text, but not work, an idea ? (it's for Kenrel of R5 + Bone)

No, you don't need a patch for a pentium 4. (Except on some specific model i think).
Mis a part quelques modeles spécifiques, on a habituellement pas besoin de "rustine" pour ces processeurs.

you have the option to save the original mbr usually when install the beos bootloader. U will need it to resort back to the previous mbr state by running bootman again and chosing restore (2nd option 1st dialog). If that is not an option i believe trying the below will help.

1. reinstall beos with no bootloader but make it the primary os. then remove it if need to.
2. type writembr in terminal
3. use win98 startup disk, type fdisk /mbr

which has a Pentium m prozessor (like it is used in
centrino notebooks), because the beta didn't work.
It always restartedwhen I accepted the license.
Does the final version work on my laptop???

I've experienced the same with BeOS 5 PE, which I've installed under Virtual PC 5. But it seems, in my case anyway, it's just the user interaction (mouse cursor, keyb. input) that's frozen, because apps will continue to run.

I thought it might be that the (in my case; emulated) keyboard wasn't compatible with BeOS.
I hope someone has an answer to this.

I just installed beos max 2.1 on my Athlon 1.2 at home with the bootable cdrom.

I got a question for ya.

I own v5.03 of BeOS. Can I install anything off of that CD onto the Max Edition install.

If not... can I install v5.03 on the athlon without the patch, then boot from the Max cd and install that onto the v5.03 install?

You probably burned a bootable cd with the P4 images. The reboot on AMDs means you don't have the patched kernel. For more instructions on what to do send me an e-mail and I will give you more details.

I finally downloaded the trial version of Nero and was able to create a bootable CD. The Installer detected my old Linux partition and installed BeOS there. Once installed I found that I had a couple of hardware issues, specifically my Kensington Trackball, so am using my old generic PS2 mouse. Also, my Creative Blaster sound card is apparantly not supported??. Everything else (that I can tell) seems to work. My Nvidia Geforce MMX2 video card was apparantly compatible, as my display booted in glorious full color.
Initially had a problem with the browser freezing and refusing to die, which I think I solved by NOT having two mice connected (one PS2 and one serial) at the same time. Who would have figured? : )
Also, how do I turn off the modem speaker. I don't care for the hissssssss..boing,.boing...etc racket when connecting?
Thanks again to Vasper for the detailed clarification on creating the bootable CD.

I've got three files unzipped on my hard drive, in a new folder created just
for them, C:\BeOS5.
These files are BeOS5PEMaxEditionV21.img, floppyP4.img, and P4Max.cue. The
readme file instructs me to edit the .cue file and make it 'point to my
version of the .img file'.

Which .img file is referred to, BeOS5PEMaxEditionV21.img or floppyP4.img?

Could you provide an example of what is meant?

Next, instructions (again, directly from the readme) are to open Nero and
select File/burn image. Select .cue file, press open, and select write.
(nothing said about selecting the other two files).
I don't have Nero, but I have another CD burner software with similar
features. Since downloading the files, I have burned four or five discs,
with no success. All I ever get is a disc with the P4Max.cue file by itself,
the other two files are not burned. Why?

Try a different mirror, or use / don't use a download manager. The zip is fine since a number of people have downloaded it. Also turn of your antivirus while downloading this file.

How to make Max work
 By sword_king - Posted on June 14, 2003 - 02:43:17   (#7724)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.1
I have 7 pentium or better machines, and Max won't install from the CD on any of them. I couldn't even get PE to install on some of them and it would never start with a color screen. The typical attempt would be a black screen, an error message, or a request to insert the BeOS CD.

I have downloaded the PE and Max CD zipfiles 3 times each, and used many different methods of burning, booting and attempting to install.

That's the bad news, now here's the good news.

After installing PE (on an Athlon 1300 w/1024MB of SDRAM) and finally getting a black&white screen to work, I made a boot disk, then I inserted the Max CD and ran the installer from there. I used an old Linux partition, so didn't have to re-partition, just format (initialize?) it for BeOS. I chose not to install any of the developer's packages or a lot of other stuff and the whole thing ended up at 165MB. It installed in less than 10 minutes. I used the boot disk and restarted, hit the space bar and chose to boot from Max. It booted to a 1024x768 color screen, with all the icons in the right places, and a cool naked angel in the background. I ran 'bootman' from the Terminal application and was then able to reboot directly to Win98 or BeOS.

Then I tried it on another older machine, and didn't have any luck til I tried a different CD drive. It seems some CD drives just can't read the Be file system.

The moral of the story is to keep on trying different combinations til you find something that works. Remember, you can't install Windows from a 'bootable' CD either, so don't be in despair that you can't do it with BeOS.

Upcoming Max V3 and MiniMax V3 status update

Yesterday we finished testing the installation of V3 with the new software additions and updates. We also included a number of new drivers found right here at bebits.
However we are not sure there are enough updates to make this release available just now.
If you have any ideas of what to include in V3, send me an email with specifics. (links to the software or drivers would be better to just the name of the software.)

There is a walkthrough for NERO. Follow it exactly. If you change even 1 parameter, the CD might not work.

I finally downloaded all the files, unzipped them, burned a disc, but the disc will not boot. I can read the disc, and all files are present. However, when booting the computer with the disc in the drive, the drive light comes on for a moment, the screen says 'searching for boot log on CD'...'not found', then the computer proceeds to load Win98.
I have a 900 Mhz Celeron (PIII class) with 256 MB of RAM.
What is going on here?
