Check in ~/config/settings/kernel/drivers/kernel
that disk_cache_size isn't set to something too high...
(I presume they forced 16384 as it prevent ppl from crashing in case they have too much RAM... but it also makes other swap more)
Change the figure to something like 2048, 4096 or just comment the line out.

I have noticed that with Max Edition ProcessController regularly shows system caches to be taking up 100+MB of ram on my system which only has 128MB. This seriously impacts system performance at times due to swappiness. This didnt happen with my regular Pro install. Has anyone else had this problem?
Otherwise I am really liking this distro. Keep up the good work.

Hi all! A friend of mine tried to install BeOS MAX 2.1 on his system:
-Intel P4 1.7Ghz
-768MB SDRAM
-Gigabyte motherboard(he doesn't know more about it, but I think it has an i845 chipset)
-Hercules Radeon 8500LE
-40GB Seagate hdd with a 10GB of free space(where BeOS was planned to be installed to)
He told me that when booting from the CD, all the icons of the loading screen turned on,and then, the screen turned off.
Thanks for any help!

Got the build Max2.1 onto a bootable CD; boots & installs fine, restart computer and receive errors:
The Application /boot/apps/Tracker has encountered and error which prevents it from continuing
The Application /boot/apps/QuickStrip has encountered and error which prevents it from continuing
The Application /boot/apps/DeskBar has encountered and error which prevents it from continuing.
After this happens the first time, I only get a blank screen. I 3-finger reboot, and get all the same messages, but the menu/task bar appears at the bottom of the screen. I can select from the menus, but no application will start. All I can do is shut down or restart
Hardware P200MMx, 128MB ram, 4GB Hdd.

I had trouble with my Max install as well. I downloaded the file again AND burned it at 2X rather than the 4X I usually burn .iso's (I know it's not an .iso).
Download again and/or burn at half the speed as before.
Hope you get it running soon. Beats running Pro...at least for me.

Following instructions to create bootable BeOS cdrom was not successful. I was using cdrecord on linux, as per instructions obtained through this site. The *.zip file i rec'd had the BeOSxx.img, and a boot.img, but not either the floppXP.img, or the amdA7(whatever).img.
I tried to create the CD with the boot.img with no success. I have created many bootable cd's with this drive, so hardware is not the issue.
I would really like to get this working; I have been using the windows executable image, and I am very impressed with the speed and stability.

It is not a problem with the server, but rather that the site doesn't support PHP.
The server I had the site on before did.
The server I am moving the files to does.
I didn't change the names to *.htm because I didn't have the time.

Anyone got a good cd label and insert for the jewel case that they'd care to share? I've got a scan of the BeOS 5 Pro jewel case inserts, but I'd prefer to have one specific to the MAX edition. Also, I have little to no graphic design skills and wouldn't do justice to a label for this cd. BTW - I'm using an old version of Surething Labeller - v1.3 or so. Thanks.

This is a simple over sight. My Distro actualyl has the patch as a driver option because os a "situation" simply adding it can create. IF you add the patched driver you destroy compatability with older ATI cards such as rage 2c cards. The screen bleeds horizontally & cards of the chipset you use are reccognised & run fine (I'm using one right now 1024x768 75 htz 32 bit) - DONT add the patched driver & keep the support for cards like the rage lc2's & others & end up in vesa with a rage pro 128. I have the feeling I'm going to give in to all this Distro crap & add to the confusion. I released my distro (BeWicked Edition) quite some time ago & had to can it due to too much demand. My bandwidth just couldnt deal with it, but the over sights & just plain silly ass things going on are almost enough to promt me to jump in & show how it's done. My distro is designed for either PE use or install CD & has the exact look of a Retail PRO CD but with updated drivers & scripts to help guide a user add features not normally in ANY one's distro & all the must have software up to date. Now having plugged the hell out of my distro I may finnish updating it & such & re-release if I can find a heafty enough host.

Try installing BeOS R5 Personal edition on a FAT/ext2 partition and replace the image.be with the BeOS Max Edition iso (rename IT image.be). Use a bootfloppy to boot into beos, then you can hopefully install it.
BeOS R5 PE can be found on bebits.

I downloaded Max under Windows and un-zipped and everything seemed OK. I used Nero5.5 to burn the install CD. Again, everything seemed fine.
When I boot using the CD the loader splash screen appears and the icons successively light up which I assume means that the system is polling the hardware. But at the end of that sequence, the system just sits there and nothing further happens. The CD drive light is off at that point.
BTW, I have an AthlonXP system and did use the correct CUE file as part of the burn process per the instructions from Vasper.
Any help???

Thanks for the response Vasper. Now I understand.
I should have realised, but sometimes the obvious things get overlooked in my enthusiasm!
I'll try again using some other approaches, but maybe I just have to concede that I need to get hold of a BeOS friendly CD Writer. Any Suggetsions?

I think the main reason that he has not simply put together an update is so that people can download a BeOS that works "out of the box" on newer systems (i.e. Athlon XPs, faster IDE controllers, etc).

BeOS images are ISO images. But not Iso Images in the sence Windows or Linus see them. Those ISO contain FAT32 or FAT16 compliant filesystems. ISO9660 compiant is a FAT32 system. BeOS uses BeFS which is a 64bit journaling filesystem that stores a lot of the file info in different places such as Attributes. If we where to create an installation of BeOS using a classic Iso image (one that can be read by IsoBuster) it wouldn't Install !!!! If you copied files out of it to BeOS, some of them would be useless.
Installation of BeOS requires BeFS Images. THATS IT. And we won't fix it. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

A couple of points -
1) I downloaded via http OK, unzipped OK, but the main .img file is reported to be corrupt/invalid (using ISObuster and CDmage from Windows). Looks like I'm not the only one.
and (at the risk of incurring the wrath of the hardcore BeOS community):-
2) I would much prefer to use iso images as a format for CD creation. I have BeOS already up & running on my system but cdrecord does not function correctly with my Iomega Zip650 CD writer so I am stuck. This is made even more frustrating considering the fact that I spent 16 hours waiting for the MaxEdition download to complete (standard line, free call time). I have downloaded some other software to handle the .img format but with not much success as it doesn't allow CD creation (ISObuster 1.2). I also run Linux but that is out of action at the moment, so maybe I will have more luck there in the future(assuming the file corruption reported is a error due to using Windows (CDmage & ISObuster) software to investigate the image files).
So in conclusion, if you want to convert adventurous Windows users, and keep them onside thus expanding the BeOS community then it would be a really good idea to provide ISO images (as are provided for many Linux Distros). We all have bad hardware days when there is little choice but to switch back to Windows...

I have used this successfully with many other quite large downloads. I have not been able to expand either this 2.1 version or the previous 2.0v. Does anyone know if I am doing something wrong or am I just unlucky in downloading two corrupted files?
