I actually fiddled with all that, changing my prefs to real time or turning real time off results in no change with the game. However by default I always run my machine with real time audio turned on. I just thought I'd note the fact the media server being dead at boot made a big differance in the game play. Any how ya Shards put in some serious work on the libpack & everything in it. He needs a pizza & beer bonus!

Actually, Andrew Bachmann added overlay support. But overlay is only used if you explicitly request it.
Shard changed the way input events were passed to SDL.
In former versions, SDL called GetMouse() in a loop (which is a synchronous method), so it was ultra-slow and very cpu-intensive. Now it peeks into the BWindow message queue, and dispatches the events to the SDL queue.

What has Shard changed in the SDL cvs? Is it just the use of overlay for video output, or is there more to it than that?
Cheers,
Simon

The version in the SDL CVS (going to become 1.2.8) should be much better, performance-wise, than the older versions, or, at least, should suck much less CPU.
Kudos to Shard....er, ahwayakchih (or how the hell his new nick is spelt :P) for making the needed changes.

Jess,
Have you got "Enable Real-time audio" and "Enable real-time video" checked in the media prefs? Turning these off should reduce the CPU usage of the media kit. Decoding ogg does actually take quite a bit of CPU though, maybe turning sounds off still decodes the file but just sets the volume to 0 or something.

I for what ever crazy reason decided to try this again the other day, I like this game but in the past wasnt able to really play it cuz it's soo slow. So I figured time has passed witht he libpack development so I'll try again & see if maybe the SDL updates make a differance. I was surprised to find the game ran smoothly, but no audio. I fiddled with things only to realize while I was away & my machine booted the media server failed to start. So with no media server running this game runs well on my 550. However with the media server up it runs at an unplayable speed. I tried then configing it to shut the sounds off thinking "Whoa SDL mod and ogg play back is a CPU pig, but to my dismay it still ran crappy with sounds off. For some reason if there is audio capabilities the game lags like mad. Go figure!

In the screenshots on the game's site, there are a few examples of the game that show a boss ship(?) which is bigger than the other ships. This ship isn't actually a larger image, it is just a small image blown up and looks terrible. Not exactly what I'd call professional looking...

Because the BeOS SDL port is far from being as good as the Linux port.

I'm playing this game on a Dell Latitude CPi, PII 266, with 2MB NeoMagic 2160 video. I first played the game under BeOS (5.0.3 Pro w/BONE) with the newest available SDL components, and it was playable, but each level took about 30 seconds to load. Then I thought I'd do a comparison with the same game and same libraries under Red Hat 9.0. The levels load immediately and gameplay is about 20% faster (and harder) than on BeOS. I don't understand why a supposedly faster OS like BeOS would be such a slug by comparison. Any ideas?

Only played it a little bit, but this is a great game. The graphics for a 2D shooter are some of the best I've seen, with multiple layers of stars and some nice effects.
Music and sound effects are also good. All in all, a very professional game.
As it uses SDL, you'll need a decent spec'd machine to play it properly, but if you have got a fairly modern computer, you'll be able to enjoy a really well put together game.
Thanks to the author and the porter.

This looks like it will be really cool... but any chance you fore see a way to optimise the code after a while to make it playable on slower systems? thanks

I run a game, continue current game, started to buy rockets. Than i changed my mind and closed current game (by hiting "Exit to Title Screen" button). Started current game again (after realizing load game doesn't work), and started battle. Instead of rockets i saw icons from shop flying around ;]
Another bug is that game crashes after CTRL+Q.

This is a cool game. Just too bad it takes a massive system to run it smooth. Foolishly I did some re wiring on my bp6 to see if I could get it stable before selling it... Seems I did it so I tried out this game. pretty slow on dual 500's but cool non the less.

this game is very cool :-)
The only probs I have with it is...... TOO HARD! :P
I can't get past the lvl where I have to destroy the frigate, oh boy.
Also, moving the target is so slowwwwww with the keyboard, can't someone code it to use the mouse?
Thanks anyway for a pretty cool and *HARD* game :)

OK, the ZIP-Archive is now up to date with all missing libraries. If your Starfighter ZIP-File is less than 2 MB big you may be missing these libs : http://www.dawnofthegames.com/downloads/missing-libs.zip
