PowerPC Version

Hey, there is a PPC version on the author's site!

Zeta

Has this been tested on Zeta? The server starts but any time anything connects (even telnet) my system completely locks up. KDL doesn't show up or anything, but the system completely stops responding.

Thanks

Great to see this is still being worked on! It is a very important piece of software at the filmschool where eXposer is being used. Thanks for your continued efforts! They are certainly appreciated!

There is already ~/public_html for the webserver...
Besides, people might want to share something else without having to make symlinks.

Will this work with other clients?

Is there a chance that this might work with something like the Xinet package on IRIX? It is supposed to allow Macs to mount files on your SGI sys and says that you can mount AppleShare volumes.
If I set that up as AFP over TCP/IP, I wonder if I might be able to mount my BeOS server? I'll have to see if I can dig up a copy and try it in the next few days.
I'll let you know if I have any luck.

Thank you very much for the offer though!!

Do you still need a BeOS Compatible PPC Machine?

Hi there! I noticed your comment about needing a PPC in order to build it for PPC. Do you still need a BeOS Compatible PPC Machine? I have a couple and am constantly collecting more. Maybe we could work out some kind of loan or trade? Let me know if you would like to do this or if you would like to send me the code to try a straight compile on PPC (you'd have to give me step by step instructions, sorry).

net_server version problem

net_server version of afp_server doesn't start and complains of a missing library (libbind.so) which is a BONE library as far as I know.

"~/Public/DropBox" folder and Client
 By salvo - Posted on September 19, 2003 - 22:27:00   (#8879)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.0 Beta 6
Two things I'd like to see:
• Restrict access to a certain folder only, "~/Public/Dropbox" would be a good location IMHO ("~/Public/[service]" could then start being adopted as a standard, in prep for Multi-User)
• Client for BeOS. This should support archiving of BFS Attributes into the Resource Fork on the HFS+ System.

a few more details
 By Prognathous - Posted on July 16, 2003 - 13:20:10   (#8198)

I tried to launch /boot/home/config/bin/afp_server both with and without the -E switch (?). In both cases, it doesn't seem to do any difference. The server is running (see below), but it can't be reached from the Mac clients.

I checked that the server is running using the following command:

/boot/home> top | grep afp
214 1.91 0.00 1.00 0.0 afp_server -E afp_listen

I hope that helps,

Problems connecting to server
 By Prognathous - Posted on July 16, 2003 - 13:08:48   (#8197)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.0 Beta 5
I installed afp_server on BeOS 5.03, but I can't manage to connect from MacOS.

In OS9, I type the IP address of the server (in Chooser), but when I try to connect I get the following error: "No response from the server. Please try again."
In OS X (10.2.6). I try to connect using afp://xx.xx.xx.xx (my IP), but again, it doesn't work - "An error has occurred (error = -36)"

Both machines can connect to this BeOS machine and view webpages served by PoorMan.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Prog.

Hooking up with Windows
 By someguy - Posted on May 11, 2003 - 01:05:45   (#7265)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.0 Beta 5
Services for Mac on Windows does the same thing afp_server does for BeOS. It is an AFP "server", not a client. So talking to BeOS from Windows over AFP is not made possible with afp_server.

Windows to beos seems possible.

Seems like Prognathous was right. This seems to say that in Win2K or WinXP one could access their beos files if they set up apple services. Has anyone tried that? or did I get it wrong?

Resource forks
 By someguy - Posted on January 25, 2003 - 21:02:39   (#5570)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.0 Beta 3
afp_server already supports Mac resource forks. It uses the attributes stream of the file to hold the resource data. It's not very efficient since Be never finished implementing the attributes API, but it works.

The resource fork is something that's specific to the HFS filesystem...you could probably mimic it in BFS using attrs, but it'd involve some tricks and I'm not sure how seamless it would be.

What about support for Mac files' resource forks?
 By Prognathous - Posted on January 21, 2003 - 18:21:02   (#5504)

Or is that something that BFS itself breaks in the first place?

did you get my mail ?

I mailed to ask if you'd be interested in joining the OpenBeOS project, we need as many talented coders as possible :)
We will need to replace the old libatalk.so (which isn't much used anyway), and maybe have an AFP client, that would be nice :)

Wow - AWESOME!

Thanks for a great app - beta 2 has fixed all the problems I had with it!

PPC afp_server

That would be really smokin cool when you get a PPC version of that too. Actually I would also like to encourage you to be able to see othe afp_servers on a network and mount the shared hard drives. I know AppleTalk is dying but the more functionality that is brought to BeOS no matter how trivial it may seem is the more I get to stay in my favorite OS instead of rebooting into Mac OS, or Windows for others. Thanks for your hard work. This server is a huge step in the right direction.

Don't you think the people with the PPC BeOS machines (like myself) would get more use out of this...i am interested in testing it as i have a network of 6 macs and my one BeOS machine. This would be a nice additon to it...

Its pretty fast too, we clocked downloads at about 1.5MB 10mb/sec. About the security, you can get the machines login information, ie, username and password that ftp and telnet uses. This would give some security, and keep things consistant with the rest of the OS.

OK, some folks were having trouble with my hack-of-a-website. :)

I've added a new primary location which is one of those free hosting jobs.

Enjoy!

Thanks

How much do Windows users pay for Win2k-Server to get AFP (NT Services for Mac)? they should install BeOS instead :-)

What a nice addition to my favorite useful BeOS apps!
My tests so far:
On the Mac, I don't see the BeOS machine in the AppleShare list. I have to give it the IP address, then I can connect (only tried connecting as guest). Should it be in the list automatically?
The second problem: Copying files from the BeOS share to the Mac works fine, the other way arround it says "Not enough space on the volume, it needs so and so much more megs" in MacOS (classic). I have shared a BeOS partition directly, not a folder. And the partition is not the boot partition.
Ah, now I tried copying to a shared _folder_ on the same partition, and that works. Well, that's pretty nice already. You don't believe how much time this is gonna save in this here production environment! Thanks a lot!

Best regards and thanks again!
-Stephan
