Thanks for writing this file system add-on, it makes a world of difference! I run gentoo on reiserfs on both my laptop and dual p3 and this is invaluable for transferring files.

Thanks!

exporting/importing BFS extended attributes to RaiserFS 4

Hi!
I am not much of a coder (just started learning Python) but am a big fan of BeOS (once an active community member)...

I would need a tip (from knowledgable programmers) if there is a way (preferably with Python) to import/export BFS extended attributes into XML so meta information can be transfered (along with files) from BFS to other extended-attributes-enabled file system (RaiserFS 4 primarly but also HFS+ in near future as Dominic does his magic over at Apple).

Best wishes, Zeljko

Hi,

I just installed LindowsOS yesterday (umm, ok it's now called Linspire, thanx to Bill the psycho) and needed a driver to see it from BeOS PE. No problems at all installing, and it runs as advertised. Great product!

Rob

But I thought I'd express my gratitude to you for developing this, it's very important and will greatly help OBOS' acceptance when and if they reach R1.

can't wait to try it

Read-Only, Versions 3.6 (and 3.5)

As stated in the first sentence of the description, the add-on is read-only. I don't plan to add write support.
ReiserFS version 3.6 is supported (tested here) and version 3.5 should be supported (not tested by me or anyone I know). Version 4 is not supported and AFAIK the on-disk structures significantly differ, so that it may not even be worth to re-use my sources (don't know, though). Currently I have no plans to to get ReiserFS 4 going -- although that might change one day, when (if?) I install a Linux that uses it.

Hi,
I have to install a RedHat 9 on my laptop and being able to transfer files from/to BeOS into Nux would be great. Therefore I'm asking you: Is your addon Read/Write ? What are the ReiserFS version supported ? thx. keep Up great work.

I mailed the results...

Mmh, weird. I guess, it must have something to do with my changes to the DriveSetup add-on. And the only relevant change is, that it reads the settings to get the volume name. But the code for that should be rather robust and even a corrupt config file shouldn't do any harm.

fye, can you please provide me with more info (perhaps better by mail):

1) Have you set the Tracker to automatically mount all mountable volumes?

2) Does DriveSetup crash, too? If not, is the partition recognized correctly?

3) Does mountvolume crash, too (open a Terminal and type `mountvolume -l')? If not, does the printed info look alright?

4) Can you mount the ReiserFS partition? If mountvolume works, mount it with: `mountvolume <volume name>' (<volume name> is the one it lists, when invoked with `-l'). If not, let's hope, that at least `mountvolume -publishall' doesn't crash (if it does, remove `reiserfs-ds' before). Then type `mkdir /mnt; mount -t reiserfs <device name> /mnt', where <device name> is the name of the device representing your ReiserFS partition.

5) I would like to have a stack crawl of the crash (when the Tracker crashes, click on `Details', then `Debugger', then type `sc' and send me the whole contents of the debugger window). If DriveSetup and mountvolume also crash, then please also drop me a stack crawl for them, too.

6) Can please do a negative-test, i.e. remove the `reiserfs-ds' from the directory into which it has been installed and reboot.

it causes my tracker to crash during the boot. I also tried to install it without copying the config file but it still crashed the tracker. With config file, I had only changed the name of the volume to ReiserFS (the first one). Can this happen because of the config file?

Thanks alot!! :)

The ReiserFS driver has allowed me to get my files off my Debian disk and for that I am very grateful!!!

Your work is appreciated!

Thank you very much :)

Well of course!

Nevermind the execute-permission issue, I checked those files under Linux, they are *indeed* marked as executable. My bad, sorry! :)

Write Support

I'm afraid, I forgot to clearly state that in the ReadMe. I will very, very likely not implemented write support. The main reason is, that it is *much* more complex and would take me ages. If someone feels motivated enough to tackle write support, I will be glad to assist.

Thanks for the feedback.
Fortunately I can reproduce the reading problems on a set of files. The last time I did a test with those files, everything worked fine, so I must have introduced the bug with a later change. I should be able to fix it very soon.

Regarding the spurious execution permission on some files, fye, are you sure that these files are not mistakenly marked executable under Linux, too? There is pretty little one can do wrong with reading the permission. If e.g. the file size and type (file, dir, symlink) is correct, then it should at least be the information from the correct file. If you can verify this problem, please drop me a mail, I would like to wrestle it down then.

Apropos mail, at the moment my mailbox access is broken. I hope the admins will fix this soon.

alt file system copy probs

Every once in a while you find a stubbern file. I normally have no problems copying off most any file system but every once in a while you find a file that will not copy right or read write. mp3's play part way & stop cuz you cant read them all & then if you copy them onto the bfs from the other files system it will only copy up to the point where it dies. same goes for text files movies or what ever. I don't knwo why certain files behave like this as I have tried doing it via BASH to see if maybe it was a problem with Tracker but it would seem more a file system addon problem or possibly errors on a drive that need to be fixed. nothing to cause data corruption but possible fragmentation of what have you making it hard to Be to read & properly handle data off the other FS

Lockie,

I access my Mandrake ext3 partitions all the time with no ill effect. ext3 is really just ext2 in fancy dress, after all.

Thanks and a possible little bug?

First off all thank you very much. I use SuSe with BeOS nad had lots of stuff on my ReiserFS, so I'm very happy that I can access those files under BeOS.

Strangely though, mp3 files report their sizes correctly but when you play them or want to copy them to BFS only the last 800K (around) can be accessed. A similar thing also happened with a DivX file (This time it read 2MB of the file). Images, texts and PDF files that I have tried worked correctly, though two image files had been marked as executable, but others not. (btw I'm using BeOS R5, not Dano)

Just wanted to let you know, other than that the addon works perfectly.

Wonderful!

I used to always talk about how many filesystems that BeOS supported, and this is a great addition. I personally don't have any data on a ReiserFS, so I don't need this (yet), but this is a great addition to the current file systems that we have.

Now, we just have to test it out and get write support, and we can move onto getting the EXT3 supported!
