Try to find lib libnet.so, create symlink from that and rename that link to libsocket.so. In some rare cases it helped

It, is in theory, possible to boot another partition / harddisk but it's not recommended for various reasons. I was able to boot BeOS (most of the applications crash or hang though) from my real harddrive by setting the device to the actual device in the /dev tree (/dev/disk/ide/ata/0/master/0/raw). Using a partition (0_1) directly does not work.
Don't do this unless you backed up your data and never ever boot into a mounted partition as this will most likely corrupt the filesystem on it. Another problem is that you specify the device with cylinder / head / sector parameters, which only allow 32GB (65535 cylinders, 16 heads and 63 sectors per block). Though you can boot into any partition that does not cross the 32GB border (in my case the first two partitions on the disk). Beware, it's risky.
If you're looking for the best guest os I would recommend Windows XP. If you disable all the design fluff and deactivate all the services you don't need, it is fairly usable and responsive. Since it also supports the HLT instruction the idle patch works with it and you can leave it running in the background without it eating your CPU. It takes ages to install (4-10 hours) and takes 2-5 minutes to boot up, but it's more usable than Windows 98 I'd say. This is on a 3GHz P4 though, don't expect it to be usable on anything much lower.

I'm using Dano, and it crashes immediately when I press one of the cursor keys (of course, I booted into Haiku, but it already happens at the very start).
I just tested under R5, and there, it doesn't crash.

Sorry but I couldn't reproduce the crash at all. What did you boot into when you got the crashs?
About the locked input devices: The b release should be better in that respect. It doesn't use the input_server add-on anymore and does not lock the input when crashing / configuring / alerting. The b release does also work under net_server.

When you press any cursor keys, Bochs will crash when you're using the Be interface and the BeOS keymap.
This is especially annoying when Bochs grabbed the mouse at that point, as you need a remote connection in order to kill Bochs (as it's being debugged by default, of course).
Is there any way to make it stop discarding mouse/keyboard events in this case?
It would be nice to have a key sequence that worked in that case without having a running Bochs.

Nice to hear that Haiku's working. I did try, but with my current image something seems broken. It get's into KDL (onscreen debug console is working at least) after trying to replay the BFS log.
How to get out: Depending on the GUI you can either middle-click (BeOS) or ctrl-middleclick (SDL) to get the mouse back or you can hit ctrl-alt-del once. This will release the input_server add-on.

I'm currently working on the BeOS native GUI of the new Bochs release (2.2) and will release a new package as soon as I got it up to par with the other GUIs (the statusbar is currently missing). It already works fine, is just missing some things. I was also able to fix the mouse problems so that the mouse should be at least more or less useable. Subjectivly judging the new version is way quicker than any of the previous ones and has support for the cirrus VGA extension.

If you want to play windows games, use windows. Any emulation will add a MAJOR speed hit. If we had a true virtual machine like VirtualPC on windows or plex86 for linux, speed might be better - but there is no such program for BeOS I'm afraid.

Installing Windows XP inside of Bochs will probably be a bit difficult if at all possible.
The bochs site does not give much information on installing Win XP as a guest operating system, but you may have a look at the bochs user manual (http://bochs.sourceforge.net/doc/docbook/user/guests.html)
Even if you are able to get it running, it will most probably not be usable, since the emulation is just too slow.
You could try a Windows 95 or 98 installation. It is not really usable either, but should be far easier to install and should be better supported by bochs.
The emulated PC in bochs is very slow. The only operating systems that I was able to really use were DOS and Windows 3.11.
I will soon publish the 2.1.1 version here with a renewed native BeOS GUI that is less resource intensive than the SDL one (applied a long standing patch and reworked it almost completely again to support the new display resolutions of the recent bochs versions, made some tweaks and worked out some bugs). That may speed up things a bit...

I am running BeBochs 2.0.2 on a Athlon XP 3000+ and it took about 12h to complete the Win98 setup. Boot time is not that bad (in fact Win98 in a BeBochs session boots faster than my Win XP does nativly on this machine).
But you probably won't reach "usable speed" unless you have a really, really fast machine (and a supported graphics card since VESA slows down the whole thing extremely).
Speed and especially compatibility has been improved in newer versions, but I think for most tasks it is still far to slow. If you want to use a ms-dos or text based linux for example that's no problem but anything grafical is simply slow.
Sorry about the bad news, I wish it would be different, but I think win4be/wine is a better approach to get a windows program running in BeOS than emulating a whole computer.

Hi, victor.domingos.
I tired 2 years ago with version 0.5 and it take me the same 48 hours to install windows98 (Celeron 333Mhz with 265MB RAM on R5.0.4), but when i finally install it and tired to boot it i have blue scree of death there, so i installed windows95 (about 8 hours IIRC) it boots fine (3-4 min), but worked slowly.
I didn't tired new versions of BeBochs scice that time, but i really wonder if it still take the same 48 hours to install windows98, i hoped that this would be much faster now. Guess not :(

Hi!
I have been configuring BeBochs (I am not sure about wich version...) for a Win98 installation in a 700Mb disk image file. I've managed to do it and (after 48 hours) I have already passed the "Copying files" stage.
I am running BeOS 5 in an AMD k-6-II (400Mhz) with 96Mb RAM. It seemed a bit slow to me. Are there BeBochs versions that are faster than others? Wich one would be faster? Is it really possible to run Windows 98 under BeOS at a usable speed? (I wonder how long will take win98 to boot in bochs, when I finnish installing it...)
Has anyone tryed this?

Well, this is just a BeOS compiled version of the source-code available at bochs.sourceforge.net, I just made a few minor adjustments to get it compiled. I do not add functionallity to the source, so if the people at the bochs project decide to implement Plex86 functions it will be available here too, otherwise it won't.
You could ask for it in the bochs mailing list or discussion boards.

Yes, a lot of different versions of Bochs apps.
No! Please do not delete the "older" versions.
Many a time I needed an older app to get it working. Many a time I searched old zipped CD's to find a working app. I don't know what the solution is other than to rename each version like BeBoch's SDL and such. Or put in bold letters that other versions exist for those that didn't know more than one version exists.

I don't mean to bash your very helpful offering of the latest Bochs compiled for BeOS (THANK YOU!), but it is kind of annoying for people to search through SIX distrobutions of Bochs on BeBits in order to download the latest. The problem with many of these six is that you can't contact the people who posted them (they don't seem to exist any more!) to delete older ones or combine them all into one unified BeBits reference. Yes, you're right, sorry about that.
First it didn't run on my system at work but I rechecked that today and it did (maybe it was because of the SDL versions). I will compile a mixed version with SDL and native BeOS-GUI when I get home (SDL has keymap support and I think it's maybe faster).

Heh - I just jumped in & tried to get it up & running quick.
I made the more prominat changes to my config & tried to install linux off a bootable CD. Just got errors. So I figured
I'd look at the error log to see what a mess my laziness caused... hmm I opened the text file... sure is taking a while. meanwhile my cpu use is at 100% all dedicated to my text editor... hmm /me checks the file size - Bochs created an 85MB error log... thats an impressive amount of text... Might want to warn people to make sure the error log don't soak up all thier disk space if they get an error or two ;) Other wise cool & thanks for the release. Just a funny thing to note.
