I think this is really cool already... I however would rather the game stay sorta goofy & fun. Thus sitting unside down on the ground trapped agasint the cannon till it moves & then being able to fly away is cool... keep it fun & skrew real...
Yes you need some skill other wise it would be kinda boring but it seems skill == "make it a bitch!" & that == no damn fun. Things CAN be fun with out being mega hard... Add elements of cool... like weather & random locations each time you play... like one time your where the game is set now... & the next you dog fighting with paris at night behind you... Weather with lightnig fx would be cool... snow, storms, day night etc... past that the only thing I'd say is more room... make it feel like your going some where. Feels sorta likea fish bowl ATM & with the balloons & such it's pretty crowded.
Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to playing the new versions!

Neat idea -- some suggestions

This a very pretty game with lots of potential... I do have some suggestions though.

(1) I used to play a similar game on the Amiga, and one of the fun parts of that game was that if you tried to climb too steeply in your little biplane, your plane would "stall out" and you would start to drop down. Then you would have to recover from the dive before you hit the ground.... this made the game require more skill than this version, where you the plane can "stand on its tail" like a jet fighter.

(2) Nose diving into the ground should be fatal.

(3) Is there supposed to be sound? The game is silent when I play it.

(4) The enemy AI needs work, he spends too much time bumping along the ground.

I ran it from terminal when I saw double clicking it did nothing. but again it said it couldnt find the resources in the home dir so I moved them there. Since it looked like it was hard coded to home I didnt think about cding to the games dir to see if the pwd was the games root dir that it would run. to run from terminal make this script & stick it in your game dir. It will run the game from Tracker from any user installed location.

#!/bin/sh

THISDIR=$(dirname "$0")
cd "$THISDIR"

Running from double click

Can you run this from a double click? There is a really simple patch you need to apply from the 'main' routine that will allow this under Tracker. I don't have the code handy, but iirc it relies on changing the local directory to the one passed in by the command line arguments.

How to run

I ran from terminal, posted an error about no config file. Config was in the airstrike directory, so cd to that directory, then "airstrike" worked. Seems pretty cool, lot higher framerate than most SDL games. They keep stressing that it is "unplayable" though. And I got no sound :( (probalby not having sdl_mixer in the right place).

Anyway, basic run instructions:
1. Open terminal
2. type (obviously without the quotes): "cd /boot/apps/airstrike-pre6" (or whereever you unzipped it)
3. Enter
4. type: "airstike"
5. Enter

Esc in the game gives a menu to set options. By default, you're the blue guy on the right. "," to accelerate, "." to fire, "Space" to drop bombs, "Left Arrow" to rotate one way, "Right Arrow" to rotate the other way.

From the screenshots this should be pretty cool when it has the proper levels.

Looks cool but...

Readme says to install look at "INSTALL.txt" there is no install txt. I move the resource file to my home dir & got a window - but of nothing... how do you install it & make it run? Thanks for the new game I hope to see it come together - looks fun.
