My last comment here was left in 2004, so i'm surprised to see anything at all new. i have been out of the BeOS community for a long time and the BeWine developers have been non-existent ever since we identified the limitations on getting the port done (which included mmap() and several other things that everyone felt more inclined to wait for from an official source like Be or Haiku). i have not heard from ANYONE even when i tried. i was unable to get the contact info from beunited.org on the people involved in the group i was supposed to be part of, no one responded to postings by me, etc. So i really don't know what to say. i can still be reached at bewine at entermail dot net, directly, and if you want to converse about trying to get something going again, i have lots of time (being on disability and unemployed, i might be able to spend more time in the BeOS community again should there be something i can be useful for).

That is pretty harsh, tunnel-vision? Jace. Especially since I had contacted you in my attempts to get ahold of some of the original BeWine members/contributors.

@thors_hammer123 if you ever happen to read this or are still interested, using Xbeosnative as a dropin X-server replacement should cure most of your problems (X11 forwarding in the server itself is still explicitly disabled if I recall tho):

The quick answer...

The quick and unhelpful answer is: this X11 port is really incomplete. No one has done any X11 development for BeOS, probably, since the set of patches that were done two years ago for the BeWine project (which is why this was released under the BeWine project name).

The password thing... that's pretty bad. Again, it shows just how quick and dirty that X11 port is.

I do not have any answers... maybe other users do. I would love to see someone start work on X11 again... Anyone interested?

x11 forwarding

hello,
i went ahead and downloaded and installed be pe max v3 on my old pentium ii computer. it really did make a huge difference in terms of responsiveness, when i boot on win2k, the computer runs as fast as molasses; when i boot it on be, it runs as fast as a new pc.
however, i did get into a bunch of hiccups that i overcame (mostly): despite having the matrox g200 listed as a supported video card, it did not work. fortunately i had a riva tnt card laying around that i could use. i also run into problems when i installed x11. before installing the bwindow mode, the xbeos app would just trash the computer (i could not do a thing, half the screen was black, the other half showed the be desktop, but the keyboard and mouse where unresponsive.) i had more luck after i installed the bwindow version. i can open an xterm, load twm, etc. i now have other problems: (1) unfathomably, the ssh client does *not* have an X option to enable x11 forwarding (although it does have an x option to disable it.) does any other client have this option? (2) something goes very bad with the display. when i log in to a remote server and get the reponse to enter a password, the password *shows in clear text* on the screen! and when i hit enter nothing at all happens. does anybody know what could be going on? after closing the x session, the terminal that i used to open it also has its display all messed up. (3) x11 runs as slow as in windows under cygwin, so i am not getting the performance advantage as was hoping, while losing a lot of functionality (cygwin is a more complete unix environment as far as i can tell.) what could be the problem?
finally an unrelated problem: does anybody know how i can share the dsl connection on my other pc (running win2k) with this one (running be)?
sorry for the long message, tia for any responses...

I was never able to get X11 to display in higher refresh rates. I think this is something that needs to be hard coded (at this point, due to the nature of the BeOS port) or something needs to be done in the scripting that initializes X11. It's been a long time since I tried to do it, so I'm not much help (as embarassing as that is).

Hmm, not quite the answer I wanted

Yes, checking the screen resolutions (and counting from #0) makes no difference - these are the obvious things which are the first things I've tried to do. I still get a low resolution with a nasty refresh rate, and so far haven't figured out how to start the XServer in a higher resolution under BeOS.

Anyone?

workspace counts from 0

Oh, forgot to mention that workspace counts from 0. So you if you want to run it on workspace 3, then give the option -workspace 2...

(you really should use some startx script that mmu_man, moooooo, or I made... either :p)

Re:Screen size

You have to set the screen size in the BeOS preferences for the workspace you are going to be running Xbeos in.
If you are going to run it in WS 3 then goto that WS and change the resolution etc...

My bad, I meant 800x600

Has anyone figured out how to change the resolution when running the server fullscreen? I always seem to get a very small resolution (I think its 800x640, but wouldn't be suprised if its 640x480). I cannot find a config file or instructions how to do it. I usually use:
Xbeos -ac -workspace 3 &

The only other option I've found is to use the X client which runs in a BWindow (the Xbeos_window project).

grab startx script
 By hardedged - Posted on August 29, 2003 - 08:38:09   (#8628)

by mmu_man from this location:
http://gravity24hr.com/mirror/StartX

Normally you just run startx, after setting up your xinitrc etc., however these are borked under the BeOS port.

So download that script, put it into /usr/X11/bin (assuming that you setup X11 correctly), edit the script so that it starts your preferred window manager (I suggest UDE :p), and then type in StartX (or whatever you saved the new script as). Type that (StartX) in a BeOS terminal, and you should be up and running in an X11 session. twm really sucks imho, so you may want to look for something else. (olvwm can be had if you look hard enough, but you may want UDE, or if you use bone you may want the fvwm2 port from Peter).

Hope that helps you some. It is not so difficult once you know what to do :)

Is bone required, or is 5.03 pro OK?

I'd like to get X working on my machine, but I'm wondering if I have to have bone (which I think is overrated.) So far I've been able to install the software valet package, and upon typing Xbeos -ac, I get the familiar grey mesh screen of X with the mouse X in the middle. But that's it. I'm getting a message in terminal when I try to run emacs that says "Xlib: connection to 127.0.0.1:0.0 refused by server, client is not authorized to connect to server."

I figure there's a minor setting someplace that will correct this; can anybody help me out?

Reply to sikosis: Things changed by X11Install

Assuming you either made these changes yourself as required to get X11 to work or that you installed X11 from Software Valet pkg, the following things will be changed on your system from the BeOS defaults:

Directories:
/usr

Links:
/boot/apps/X11R6.4 --> /usr/X11

Configs:
/boot/home/config/boot/UserBootscript
/boot/home/.profile

Paths (found in configs above):
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/X11/bin
export LIBRARY_PATH=$LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/X11/lib
export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0

These are all I know at the moment. Could any of these be affecting you? Maybe an existing path statement in your configs was changed? You might also want to examine the errors you get when trying to compile as they may give clues as to where the problem is.

hi,

since loading Xwindows on my BeOS pro PC, I can't build any projects that I use to be able to do.

I assume it's changed some paths somewhere, does anyone have a list of what changes I need to do, to make my system work again.

Ummm..

Well- zeta will run bone if they have source to bone, and liscense. no source, can't fix except patch, and *puke*.

Who's to say they won't switch to obos net_server when time is right- but that's something you should weigh when considering doing a port.

Who uses net_server? Wait, who's supposed to use bone?

BONE based X11

With YellowTab almost ready with an update to BeOS (Zeta), which incidently will have BONE, I was wondering if anyone had any plans of updating the X11 port. With sockets as file descriptors, updating the port should be much easier. Any takers? I would be interested in participating in this project (and maybe update the Qt port http://www.bebits.com/app/2420). Can someone with more info (or the 6.4 BeOS source) please email me to get the ball rolling?

Unfortunately, no. KDE itself would need to be ported to BeOS. I am not aware of any active projects to do this at this time. Please let us know if you know of one.

I will work on a new Valet Package with updated Imake

Hi Jace,

I will work on a Valet package with the changes I
outlined. It will take me a couple weeks as I've got
other fish to fry at the moment, but I'll let you know
when I'm finished. Then you can upload the update to
BeBits and BeWine.

I make heavy use of Imake so hopefully I can
flush out a few more bugs. Thanks for putting the
initial package together.

-Michael

Thanks Michael

I received your email, but did not check the account for a while. Sorry about that. Since BeWine is on hold for updates to BeOS (which at this point will be OBOS R1), I hadn't thought to keep my eye on the mail account. Sorry! I have since replied to your message :)

As for building a new Software Valet package... I would like to do it, but changing things in the X11 code/make and making Software Valet packages from the changes are a bit out of my realm (my coding/scripting skills and my complete lack of hard drive space on my BFS drive). If anyone would like to volunteer to do this update and provide a new package, it would be very much appreciated - let me know if you can provide a link to it and I will get it put onto the BeWine site.

Several bugs in the Imake configuration
 By mchampig - Posted on April 22, 2002 - 13:28:32   (#1089)
Current version when comment was posted: 6.4.3
This is a great package but I found and fixed several
bugs in the Imake configuration, which is shipped
as part of X. I use Imake for cross-platform
development and it is highly desireable for this
to be available for BeOS. I don't know if this is
supported anymore...emails have gone unanswered. Here
is how to fix Imake:

o BeOS.cf: Fix the broken C++ suffix. ".cpp" should be "cpp"

o Imake.cf: Define x86 hardware when detected. In the
section which checks for BeOS, add:

#if __INTEL__
#define i386Architecture
#endif

o BeOS.cf: Set GCC as the C++ compiler.

#define HasGcc2ForCplusplus YES

Also, if you are using the newer GeekGadges GNUpro
release for gcc (2.95.3) you need to set your
IMAKECPP variable to the proper path to find cpp.
You can export this in your .profile. Just point it
at the C pre-processor you want Imake to use. If
you are using the compiler that comes with 5.0.3 you
don't need to do anything special.

If I knew how to make a Valet Package I'd do this myself. If anyone can volunteer I'd be happy to send
you the patches. I don't know if this would bother
the BeWine folks, but it would improve the state of
the BeOS development environment. :-)

-Michael
