On two different systems I have, HandBrake dies with the following debug...
loading symbols
segment violation occurred
800228bd: * 318b movl (%ecx), %esi
manager:
...Both use SCSI DVDs, and both are dual P3.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, really appreciated.
I am obviously aware that HandBrake is far from being perfect and that similar apps on others operating systems have usually more interesting features, just remember HB is a really young app ;)
stephenb:
Video is already VBR (you only specify the average bitrate), and 2-pass encoding is my main target for the next release. Xvid support might come soon as well if their lib runs fine on BeOS. About encoding others sources than DVD or VOB folders, it is not planned; check ffgui for this when Zeta is out.
marcone:
What you are asking is perhaps included in the MPEG-4 standard, but indeed, no player handles it AFAIK. Until there is, I'll probably focus on making wide readable files (e.g. AVI files at the moment, and mp4 or matroska files w/ subtitles support afterwards). Let's see what's coming then, but I'm kinda thinking a single BeOS app cannot be the source of a new wildly-used format ;)

Despite all the raves about this being "perfect" and "a killer app", there's one obvious thing missing. What I'd like is to be able to encode an entire DVD, including menus, special features, and everything else, to mpeg-4. Basically, change the video encoding to mpeg-4 to save space, but leave everything else intact. A modified version of VLC (for example) would obviously be needed to play such a recoded disc.
|
|
| Very interesting, will be keeping an eye on this app |

I've played around with Handbrake a bit, pretty cool. I would love use this instead of having to screw around with the 8 gajillion settings of GordianKnot et al. There are a few things I'd like to see added, though:
- support for VBR encoding, especially in video (although it may already do this and I'm just misinterpreting the interface).
- the ability to choose a specific output codec (I'm rather partial to XviD myself).
- 2pass encoding
- the ability to specify an input file other than the VOBs on a DVD.
Other than that, it seems pretty much perfect. Once this puppy is feature-complete, it could be a nice "tractor app" and I'll make a point of pimping on the A/V forums I post too. I'm sure there are lots more people like me, who want to get decent rips without having to read through 40 pages worth of doom9 guides.

Nice, clear and simple !
Make somes tests with AniMatrix : covert the first three movies @ 25fps with default bitrates under bi athlon 2200+ . Result is readeable with VLC without problem !
Good job, Eric !
Can't wait for the prefs panel ;-)

sound quality and sync is much better now. Also the file size is great. Sad but after some percents the app mostly hangs...but the file it leaves behind worked fine with vlc..Just add picture size and beware it off hanging up and it will be ready for me !

you probably have the same issue I have, a WinDVD drive...
you need to break the warranty by flashing the drives BIOS to region-free to fix the problem. I don't suggest you do this, or endorse it, or even affirm that it is the cure, but if fixed my DVD drive not working outside of Windows
|
|

Did you read the warning on the download page ? ;)
I said "the generated files might have audio out of sync and will probably be unreadable by most AVI players (except VLC)". I'm aware of these problems and am fixing those for the next release.
I may add an VCD output some day, but only when the others features work correctly.

Hi !
Thanks for the app!
I have nevertheless experience a few troubles:
a) the rip/conversion does not start if no languaga track is found (e.g. music DVD)
b) the converted avi movie is not recognized as a movie and cannot be played (I have Hybrid DivX codecs installed).
Can you tell me what to do to fix it plz ?
And I think it would be nice if one could choose to encode mpeg1 vcd ready streams.
Thnx for all.
Fred.
