Low-score votes

Several app have been victims of this unfair low-score-voting. I believe it is a case of "I envy your your app/coding-skills so badly that I'll punish you".

Go vote for BePDF (IMO, one of the finest BeOS apps ever created), and check out the amount of < 3...

Fine devs/apps deserve better.

Very cool Dark Wyrm thx...

Just downloaded Mr.Peeps a few hours ago. And now I downloaded the language file and installed it. It is working out of the box, like a good BeOs App should. Very nice ahm cannot remember if it was in German before.

Of course I'll give it a 10 since there is no other comparable app to yours. And of course your apps naturaly very nice coded. And a true native BeOs App.

Yep... hope it will get back on track :)

True, the rating is really a good source of inspiration for any developer. While all this ratings may seem "Trivial" to coding gods or people assuming to be one, it is really a good source of encouragement for developers like me... and apparently from your last comment, for you too.

My app was given the lowest rating of ONE two times to get it knocked off the list... its plodded its way back and hopefully such a good as like Mr.Peeps! will surely come back :)

Very much disappointing, but minor

It certainly blew me away last month when I discovered that I was the author of the top-rated app on BeBits. I was happy for Michael Lotz when his timing fix for fast processors (cpu_fix) was voted to number 1. I noticed that Mr. Peeps! had completely disappeared off the list yesterday when I went to post the new beta and I certainly was disappointed when it was dropped like that.

I guess it's just a reminder of how "fame" is fleeting. I also wonder why the person did it - if he/she has a problem with me or my app, why not come to me? It's *certainly* not like I'd bite his/her head off. Oh well. I knew it was a good app before it was on the Best Rated list, and it still is a good app. I'm just going to keep on doing what I've done and make the best contact manager available. I can't say I'm not disappointed, but in the grand scheme of things, it's a minor thing. I guess people will just need to vote it back up there again. :P

A number 3 rating!

SOmeone seems to have given Mr. Peeps! a number 3 rating just to lower its from the "best rated" page... pretty low thing to do.

This app deserves a lot higher. I noticed this when I went into vote for Mr.Peeps! ... not nice :)

Glad to hear things are working better for you. The version I'm using is a little more patched than the last release, but not much different -- the bugs I'm fixing are not very easy to fix, but they are also quite minor. I've seen the need for some tools which work with contacts but not for general day-to-day tasks, like importing from e-mail on the hard drive and other stuff and I am working on a tool suite for certain specific tasks like that. VCard2People converts to and from VCards, which you can import into Outlook, and I hope to be able to integrate a version of that into the tool suite if I get the time -- Outlook is such a pain.

Feature Request

Hello, Darkwyrm, thanks for releasing that fixed version. Works great so far. I like that automatic saving so much, the tabs, just great. I'd like to see that in other applications, too.

Well, I still use Windows, and I am sure I am not the only who uses other OS's, so, while still knowing there are applications out there that convert people files to text files, or whatever the standard format is for addressbooks, I dream of having a Mr. Peeps! application that has the option of automatically saving changes (upon closing Mr. Peeps! perhaps) to a text file or something readable by Windows. I have done this with BePhoneBook (available on BeShare, the BePhoneBook source code was there, too) and I know there are other programs out there soley for this purpose, just don't want to go to each program everytime I make a change, add a person, etc. Anyway, that's what I would like to have.

Thanks again for a great app.

Simpler crash fix

I fixed the crash plus a couple other very annoying bugs in the group editing/renaming code, so I simply just did another release. Those of you who have beta 2 should get the next one. If you have further problems, by all means let me know and I'll do what I can. :)

A crashfix for moi?

Thank you, DarkWyrm. :) Rather than attempt your tweak and discombobulate my Mr. Peeps utility, I will kindly ask for your fixed version by e-mail, which you will recieve shortly.

Merci.

Crashfix for sarana

The crash was because of some code which I was working which I normally leave disabled, only I forgot to disable it after playing with it last time. I can e-mail you a fixed version or you can make this tweak:

1) In PeepsWindow.cpp, find these lines:

void PeepsWindow::HandleNodeMonitoring(BMessage *msg)
{
int32 opcode;

and change the last line to

/* int32 opcode;

2) Then, find these lines:

}
}

PersonData *PeepsWindow::FindPerson(entry_ref ref)

and change the first one to this:

}*/
}

PersonData *PeepsWindow::FindPerson(entry_ref ref)

3) Recompile the code

This crash will no longer "bug" you. :P

I just got back from vacation and I can't believe this one slipped by. It occurs as a result of an unimplemented function. I'll see if I can post a patched version in the next day or two.

possible reason for blank window
 By ernestTX - Posted on July 15, 2004 - 07:16:54   (#13334)
 Current version when comment was posted: 1.1 Beta 2
DarkWyrm, I think what the problem was, was the fact that I did not have any People files created. If your app opens up and there are no existing People files, the window is blank. I then created a People file. But reopening your app did not work either. Then I dragged n dropped the file (because BeOS has kewl d'n'd functions), and it is working. Just thought I would pass this along.

Blank window

I'm glad you asked about this, ernestTX. The nature of development, especially in UI, requires a little testing, which is why it's only beta. What you have described is a forehead-smacker of a mistake. Every developer seems to have one now and then, and it seems that I just had mine. :P I can safely say that future versions will prevent the 'blank-screen-what-do-I-do-now' syndrome. :)

It is working now. I had to drag an existing People file and drop it into the window. Is this the way it's supposed to be. I did not see it in the Read Me files?

I'm not sure I'm doing this right; but, the applicaion opens and I don't see any tabs or fields, just a blank white window. I see the menu items, but when I click on an option, nothing shows up. Does it require a lib or something? This seems like a great app and have been waiting for something like this; esp. with photo support and notes. Please help. :) Glad to see you are keeping busy DarkWyrm

I really like the feel of this--especially the way the context menu pops up slightly up and to the left of the cursor, so you get the first popout menu without moving. Even Tracker isn't that smooth!

And now for the obligatory "just one thing": How about Hermod integration for Jabber contact info? :)

Thanks,

Kev

Geneology app
 By DarkWyrm - Posted on July 14, 2004 - 19:32:03   (#13318)
 Current version when comment was posted: 1.1 Beta 2
Thanks, guys. I appreciate the support. :) Anyway, a geneology app using something like a People file is an interesting concept that you have there. It's another one of those interesting apps which rely on what is effectively a database of information, for which the BeOS file system is perfectly suited. Drawing the tree would be the hardest part. Storing the data would be the easy part - just make a FamilyTree file type (or whatever you wanted to call it) and create a number of different attributes for what you need, like Date of Birth, Date of Death and such like you mentioned, and voila! Not something I'd do myself, but it'd be neat to see.

Genealogy app?

This is one damned clever app. Now if it also supported attributes such as date/place of birth/marriage/death, and some sort of "parentage" attribute to keep track of relationships, you have the kernel of a very clever genealogy app. I guess it would need some sort of front end to graphically represent a family tree, also perhaps a means of import/export to established (Windows) genealogy apps.(Yes I know genealogy is for old people, but don't knock it. We're all aging; it's better than the alternative.)

Awsome

Yup -- they are pretty much the same issue. 1.1b1 doesn't support Open With... or acting as the preferred application - yet. The current development version I've got on my HD supports it, but it doesn't work right yet. Rest assured that the next beta will have this feature. :)

Direct Opening

Hi, DarkWyrm. Thanks for replying.

One other request, or perhaps bug. On PhOS, when I open an person file, Mr. Peeps opens, however, only to the compacted list, not directly to that particular person's entry. Obviously, if I click on a person, I want it to open to that person's entry.
Also, oddly Mr. Peeps does not show up in the context menu when I right-click to Open With . . ., and when I set it as the preferred application (it was not on the drop down list of available applications by the way, I found it by using the "select" button) in FileTypes, a pop-up came up saying that Mr. Peeps does not seem to handle this filetype.

I guess all of those things are about the same issue. I figure this may be just something else you haven't gotten to yet.

Anyway, thanks again for your work.

better aligning of the fields

Nice app, only one little comment, please make the fields better alligned, it look a bit messy right now (according to the screenshot of the app). It would improve the readability.

Nice workaround...

That's a nifty way of working around that problem. I do have an autoformat feature that I'm working on for beta 2 which will fix some bugs in the group parsing code. Currently, Mr. Peeps will crash when there is a group with a space in it and this new code should fix it. Sorting by last name will also be in place for beta 2.

I am an idiot

I just need to do that with my entry, and all will be cake, like in the "Name" entry, just write "Arana, Sebastian" instead of Sebastian Arana. Uy, sorry about that.

Are you guy trying to keep me from booting to windows or what?
A functional people app that does more than just list a few fields, and is not as buggy as Deeper People.

Thank you, DarkWyrm, and welcome back!!

On another note, I would like to request that feature where you one-click on the "E-Mail" so that Bemail (or whatever your e-mail app is) starts up automatically, and the same with the "Web Address" or URL field, with your default browser. (I know it's beta, just asking)

I also have a personal pet peeve that you may want to entertain and, therefore go against this apparently growing trend in the world, which is to sort peoples names by first name. AAAAAA! Why? I have a list of family members, all with the same last name, and they are sorted by first name, so they are not together? All my "Dave"'s are together. I don't care about my "Dave"'s being together. This is happening everywhere, not just your app, on tablature listings, etc., thus the "AAAAAAA!" I don't get it. OK, thanks for letting me vent. I would like to see, somewhere in the world, the "last name, first name" type of organization, and THEN alphabetize the first names if need be. Perhaps you might be the first to do this and relieve my pain! :) Thanks again for your work!!
