Nevermind. The error message was being generated by my old/previous device entry in Network Prefernces. :)

Everything works now, I have connectivity! Thanks!

A network device (Interface0) failed to initialize

I installed this diver on my Dell Latitude c400 (with 3COM 3c920). The new device appears in the Network Preferences, but whenever I boot or restart networking, I get the following error message in an error dialog window:

"A network device (Interface0) failed to initialize"

I am using BeOS MAX.

The 3c920 driver will not recognize my PCI card because it doesn't know it's ID. the card is a 3C905 TX with the above ID.
Patrick could you add my cards ID so it may work with this driver?

Works with ZETA 1.0 on DELL Latitude C640 :-)

All information based on my Dell Latitude C640 with a 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible) networkcard(Vendor:3Com Corporation (0x10b7)/ Card ID: 9200)and ZETA 1.0.
Make the installation as discriped http://patrick.lafarguette.free.fr/en/beos/3c920/. Delete or remove the two ec9xx files . Reboot the system and than you have under networkpref the card "/dev/net/3c920/0". With this driver DHCP works fine.

I have 10b7:9200 and it failed to work in Zeta R1

No go in Zeta R1. Zeta sees card, but it does not work and jams network preferences totally.

DHCP works in BeOS versions with Bone

At least I just assumed it probably does. I am using the 3c920 driver in PhOS and it seems to work perfectly in every way. Even a large download speed increase with my broadband connection.
For the comment and question just previous, I think the 3c920 driver would work in R5 Professional but with no DHCP. Similar to how it worked for me in PEMaxEdition-v3.1b1. If that is any help?

Will this driver work with BeOS 5.0?

I am using this driver with a integrated 3C905C-TX chip on a Albatron KX600S mainboard. The ethernet port is connected to a wireless broadband modem through a Linksys BEFSR41 router using PPPoE protocal. It enables me to use the modem on Beos and Linux. The only thing is I have to enter the IP address, subnet mask and gateway manually in Beos. Anyway this is much better than no support. Thanks for the driver.

This driver works great with my A7N8X Deluxe motherboard.

If you're having trouble with this driver and are booting into BeOS from Windows, try using a boot floppy instead.

More on the freezes
 By Androo - Posted on April 23, 2004 - 20:39:57   (#12169)

Apparently the freeze I was experiencing (comment below) doesn't always happen. For months I had a BeOS system going using this driver with no issues. Then one day I booted into Be, and my system froze shortly after boot. So I booted into Be with addons disabled, removed this driver and no longer had a freeze. Installing it again resulted in a return of the freeze. My syslog has nothing of interest that I can see.

I'd love to help find the cause of this, especially since a few comments below mention similar freezes.

I'm using the 3c92x that's integrated into my A7N8X Deluxe mainboard and unfortunately this driver, when installed, freezes my system shortly after boot (a couple seconds after the Deskbar appears).

What do I need to do to send you a report? :)

I have a new machine which is totally supported by BeOS r5 excpet for the ethernet card. This driver recognizes my 3com 3C920B-emb integrated fast ethernet card but it doesnt work. Actually after setting up the driver it will freeze the system sometimes. Is there anyway support for this chipset can be added? Thank you

Of course it works, as long as it uses the public API and doesn't complicate things in net_server addons, BONE just uses it. If only that was as easy for wlan drivers ;)

Hello, I just want to thank you, you rescued me when I tried out BeOS MAX v3.

Now you've done it again, since you driver works very well under Zeta too... I'm writing this from Zeta with Mozilla with your driver beneath.

Thanks man.

This driver seems to work fine with my acom 3C920B-EMB Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller. But it wont connect to my network at all. Is this card supported at all? in other words is the driver really working for my card or does beos just think it is?

WinModems are not real modems. Also BeOS doesn't have "Modem Drivers" in the first place

A: find the right talkback or
b: buy a decent damn modem. Not a WinModem

About BONE
 By Patrick Lafarguette - Posted on September 4, 2003 - 09:12:17   (#8683)
Current version when comment was posted: 0.0.9
As mmu_man said, my driver use standard IOCTLs so if it doesn't work with BONE, the problem is elsewhere.
I don't have BONE so it will be helpfull if anybody could send me a syslog file.
Can somebody confirm that device id 0x9210 works ?
It would be great also to know NIC or MOBO names for which the driver works.

BONE please!

Thanx for an awesome driver... only problem is it won't work in Dano, Boneyard detects the driver but crashes when I try to load it...

Btw, Zeta is using BONE so in order to get this driver working in Zeta it needs to support/be ported to BONE!

Once again - thanx alot for your effort... BeOS would be worthless for me without this driver!

if the driver uses the standard IOCTLs (as in ether_driver.h), then it will work in BONE as is.

BONE, maybe?

nForce2 support

I believe the same NIC is built into NVIDIA's nForce2 boards, the 3Com 3C920B-EMB Integrated Controller. I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 2.0 morherboard, and the chip is recognized as a 3Com ethernet controller by the Devices preferences panel, and its PCI device ID is 9201. I wonder if your driver could be made to support it as well, since I bought a cheapo RTL8139 NIC just to be able to run BeOS and have internet access :)

I'd be happy to provide any kind of information you desire, and betatest the driver on my setup as well.

Thank you :)

One step ahead

Got the new version working with net_server (thanks for dhcp support!). Now I have issues with net going down occasionally forcing me to restart the network. This could be caused by NIC and Soundcard sharing IRQ. I don't know. I bet you have the same situation then since you've got a similar laptop (I'm on Inspiron 4150) to yours.

Thanx in advance PLA

Problems...

With BONE I can't get driver to load correctly.

In BeOS r5 (clean install) I load the driver with DHCP, then get this error when trying to ping 127.0.0.1: "ping socket: name not found".

When I close BeOS, net_server (with driver still loaded) won't respond to kill signal so I have to force it down.

I have a Inspiron 4150 with the same onboard NIC as you.

Thanks ALOT for your efforts!

I forgot one step in the installation process. You have to create a link in /boot/home/config/add-ons/kernel/drivers/dev/net to the driver in /boot/home/config/add-ons/kernel/drivers/bin/3c920.
Documentation will be corrected in the next release.

I believe OpenBeOS is looking for network card drivers, it was in some network stack TODO list. Have you considered letting them use the driver?
