I have actually considered SVG already. The problem is wether the whole document or Shape objects only should be exported to SVG. Later would be easier, but not as satisfactory. The same goes for other document formats, as for example Photoshop documents are build up differently. The different layer blending modes are a problem. I'm keeping this in mind though and maybe I come up with a good solution. For the moment, my focus is support for affine transformations in all object types. There is good success in Bitmap and Shape objects, but for example the Brush system needs a rewrite... When this is done, I will either do pixel selections or improved import/export.

-Stephan

Cool!

If you're from Europe, using the Mensys store will most likely be easier. I don't want to prefer one over the other. Kagi has a more professional site for vendors, while the Mensys people have been *personally* very nice to us. So either one is fine. I'm also in touch with the ICO people to offer our products on their store too.

There is two different ways to Copy/Paste. One is inside the Object list. This means you copy and paste "objects", WonderBrush has its own clipboard for this, which is persistent like the system clipboard. So it works even across different sessions of using WonderBrush. The normal shortcuts don't work there though, you have to use the menu items. Selected objects are copied, so you pick them from the list, not directly on the Canvas.
The second way of Copy/Paste is through the "Select" tool (the icon with the dotted rect). It works just like the Crop tool only it copies the *bitmap data* to the system clipboard. It is also persistent and compatible with ArtPaint. You can choose, if you want to copy only from the active Layer or from the entire Canvas. You define the area to be copied by dragging a rectangle and optionally changing it afterwards. As soon as you press the green "Commit/Apply" checkmark icon, the area is copied and the box disappears.
Additionally, there is a single "Paste" menu item in the Edit menu. This item will be enabled whenever there is *bitmap data* in the system clipboard. So it works when copying something from within WonderBrush itself, but also when copying something in ArtPaint or any other compatible app (not Refraction). When you use the Paste item, a new Bitmap object will be pasted and WonderBrush automatically switches to the Translate tool. If the bitmap data came from WonderBrush itself, the position will be maintained, while if it comes from ArtPaint, it will be at the top left corner of the canvas.
As far as the Select tool is concerned, empty areas (alpha = 0) are clipped from the selection. A completely empty area will give an error.
If there are ideas for making this smoother (other than assigning keyboard shortcuts to the Object list copy/paste), please let me know! :-)
Regards,
-Stephan

Everything implemented so far works like expected...
just wonderful.
Sure I miss my basic image manipulation tools and some display for the color values and Text values, but I know they will be implemented soon.
As Vincent pointed out it is still a bit confusing using the copy and paste function, it would be very nice and easy to use it on objects and just hold down the strg+c for copying and strg+v for paste it. Together with shift it will copyed exactly on the old possition.
Yes that would be nice.
I tried the shape-transform tool, and it is just compled for me. It is more than I would use in daily need now. I just try to find out what it is usfull for.
Ok thanks for your clean and stable version.

Thank you very much for the tipps and the explanation about the touch command.
I often use wonderbrush but I badly miss the rotate Tool to rotate the pictures precisely. I need this in order to
combine to layers for creating posters or flyers. So I wish to rotate the background Picture to fit my combination.
I by myself read the documentations allways but often forget the keys. But they work...
My wishlist is long but for now I am very pleased with this product and I am proud I bought it and support my favorite app on BeOs. Btw I bought exposer too. Only to support Wonderbrush.

I also think that every YellowBites app is excellent. To sell more copies of eXposer and WonderBrush you firstly should update your website. It's so outdated! And maybe you should do some marketing actions (like Xentronix). ICO's shop is also the place where people should be able to buy YellowBites' products.
Greets.

You can change the size, rotation and position of the text using the keyboard (make sure the Text input field does not have focus). Nobody every reads documentation, even if it is as short as WonderBrush's.... :-) You will have to at least scroll through it to figure out which keys.
Linking layers together will come at a later point, I'm afraid. I suggest using the Translate tools value input. Select everything on one layer, do the transformation and remember the numbers in the X and Y fields. Then on the other layer(s), select everything again and enter the same numbers to do the translation. A sorry workarround, I know, but that's all you got right now.
As for turning off the brush cursor... how exactly should this work, like in Photoshop, with an alternative real mouse cursor? Would be easy, actually.

-Stephan

OK, here's what I noticed whilst creating a logo with WonderBrush.
The text tool works beautifully and renders beautifully, but I would like the ability to more smoothly control the size (the difference between each notch on the slider is just too great). I would like to have the ability to link layers together so that I can manipulate them together. I'd like to have the option to turn off the brush preview cursor as sometimes it gets in the way when doing precise touchups.
Any other comment I would have would just be a feature suggestion borrowing from Photoshop, so I'll stop here :)

The number of registered users is much higher for WonderBrush than for eXposer. I'ts only just above fourty though. That tells you how few eXposer licences we actually sold... Unfortunately, since WonderBrush is so cheap, this doesn't translate to a lot of money. The online stores are taking a percentage too. On Kagi, the resulting ammount is 5,80 for each 7,50 we sell. That's still including German taxes though. In fact, we have not reached the minimum ammount of money that triggers a Kagi payment.
When WonderBrush becomes more powerful, I plan on raising the price a bit. Actually purchasing WonderBrush (or any app) is the most encouraging thing you can do as a user. Sending considerate feedback is also very good. The best feedback is when you actually tried to use the product and found problems that stopped you from being productive (missing features but also misbehaviour). Of course, when you were positively surprised by the product and just want to tell that to the author, this is also very encouraging. I'm sometimes reveiving very valuable feedback, but sometimes it feels like there is only 300 BeOS users left in total... :-)
Best regards,
-Stephan

The shell command "touch" is for updating the modification date of a file to the current time. WonderBrush uses compiled addons for its localization. (Not that there is a very good reason for that, but I avoided comming up with my own file format for translations...). WonderBrush compiles these addons from the human readable translations that are actually simple C code. Usually, WonderBrush cannot use an "old" addon, ie one that was compiled by an older WonderBrush version. That's why it checks each time before using an addon if it maybe needs to recompile the translation. As for the last release, I forgot to "update" the translations, since I did some last minute fixes. Some languages had therefor a modification date older than WonderBrush itself. Since no strings changed though, it was relatively safe to tell you to use "touch" on those addons to update the modification time. Now WonderBrush didn't think it needed to recompile (which unfortunately only works if you have the development tools installed).
So, after this long comment, it should be clear that you cannot use touch to fix broken links. But I think there is a tool for that on BeBits, only I forgot the name. Sorry... :-)

-Stephan

Every app YellowBites touches feels like what a BeOS-app should be. ColdCut and eXposer are two of the best examples of quality apps on this OS and WonderBrush is shaping up to be another.
As soon as I break out of my "broke college student" state (when I get a job in this town), I will be sending my $7.50 along your way as this app certainly deserves more development. Keep it up.
Just out of interest, though, about how many people have registered your BeOS apps?

Hm. Maybe I released a version, where the application has a newer build date than the language add-ons. This is a mistake on my side, since WonderBrush then tries to rebuild the language add-ons. If you have the development tools not installed, this means that the add-on building fails and the Language disappears from the menu.
The temporary fix would be to "touch" all language add-ons, so that their modification date is newer then the application executable. In case you're not sure on how to do this:
1.) Launch a Terminal
2.) type "cd /path/to/WonderBrush/Languages"
3.) type "touch *"
Tell me if this fixes the problem.

-Stephan

Hi,
after I wrote my Talkback comment about how I would add affine transformations first, I had an idea, of how a simple copy&paste function could look like. I assembled it from existing pieces of code this morning, and it is working great already. I think I will do a "minor" update to the release version in a few days (maybe there will be a delay, since I will have no internet access at my girlfriends place), and then you can all do some simple copying as in ShowImage. :-) Some of you might have noticed the "Paste" menu item in the "Edit" menu. If the system clipboard contains an archived BBitmap, it will be enabled (that's what ArtPaint generates if you copy something in ArtPaint). Now, WonderBrush features a new tool, very similar to the "Crop" tool, and that will copy a rectangular area of the canvas (or the active layer) to the clipboard, which can than be pasted using the "Edit" menu as a new "Bitmap" object. As I said, this is already implemented, though it will of course only be there as a sorry placeholder for real selections. Those will be done in a very similar concept as in Becasso, or Photoshops mask mode.
Regards,
-Stephan

What we see is just the beginning,
I think Stephan want to solve the fundamental and difficult things first. As I think he is able to implement things like copy and paste with easy. I think he want to make the base considerations and major decissions first. After that he will apply the other missing things like rotation, selection, and add-ons.
Im very sure that this app will change the view of BeOs Grafiktools, as it is a nativ and very fast app.
The great "full working" shape tool is just the beginning. And the smothness to work with the objects is just great arent they???

This is a problem of "Content creation" versus "Manipulation". I know there are many things lacking in the current version. Real pixel selections are one of them, and I guess this is what cvincent meant. At the moment, I have three current tasks:
- Make the Shape tool more feature complete (translating selections of control points, multiple paths for defining holes etc),
- Support for affine transformations in the Translate tool
- Support for pixel selections
All of those are pretty important right now, though I am more inclined to get the transformation stuff working first. My animation study is finished, and I have more spare time for coding now. You can expect Work In Progress releases that will hopefully include these features in the not too distant future. Remember, the most encouraging support you can show, is by spending USD 7.50! :-)
Another very encouraging thing is real bug reports and feature suggestions via emails. I have to thank Marcin Konicki (ahwayakchih) for his very good support and bug hunting. Without him, this release would not have been as polished! :-)
Regards,
-Stephan

I was very supprised by this app. It feels solid, very solid. It's fast & responsive on my slow system & has many of the basic's already for doing design. Has lots of load save stuff for colors & brushes etc & so it looks VERY nice for setting up for a certain persons style of work... man if this gets filters, gradeient tools etc... it'll be monsterous. The solid feel of this app alone makes it nice. Keep up the good work & let me know when you plan on nuking Photoshop! 8^)

Hello, Stephan.
I like ideology of you app and got idea that it can be unique for BeOS gfx-apps killer-feature implemented.
Namely, painting smoothing, which actually exists IIRC only in vector-drawing apps (Like CorelXara or Flash).
So, when you draw line, additional slider with "tolerance" is active, until you hit return or such.
Moving that slider you can smooth hand-drawn line.
Sure, it needs holding in memory full vector of draw-movements, but not for ever:)
I don't know though, which method for smoothing will be optimal - polynomial interpolation, Fourier-filtering, or simplicistic "box-averaging".
But what i know is that will allow perfect art creation for much more users:)

Please read my comment below about "artifacts". It tells you also about fixing the lock ups (if that's what you're seeing) on Zeta. Remember it's best to email me about such problems. And it would be nice if you took the extra time and describe your problem in a little more detail. It took me a lot of time to write this application. Last but not least, I would expect Zeta to be binary compatible with R5. If something crashes on Zeta that runs fine on R5, it might be wise to tell the Zeta support team, given the "Release Candidate" status of Zeta.
