While changing the default output can break scripts, I don't see why adding options would.

I will download the CVS and have a look at the work you (& others) have done on the attributes - I have implemented a rename_attr command and that might be of more interest to people.
I am using custom classes to handle the attributes so I would need to rewrite them without these classes. My point is that I don't want to be in the situation of breaking compatibility by adding extra output to the screen or adding flags.

Why would we limit ourselves to R5 clones ?
I mean our goal is cloning R5, so that's what we do. But that doesn't mean we can't include some extentions if they already exist. Just we won't do them ourselves.
For exemple, I had the need for lsindex to output a list of mkindex commands to recrreate the indices, I just added that to the OBOS lsindex, and put it in the CVS as it might be of use to others.

attributes & OpenBeOS

Jace: I agree that attributes are not used enough in the system but I believe that there should also be more utilities to help users manage the attributes.

mmu_man: The point is that they add additional functionality to the existing applications which have surely been reimplemented for OpenBeOS. It is the same situation for People.iro - one could classify them as evolutions of the existing applications or a separate fork. Surely OpenBeOS is more interested in the existing applications and not new ones?

what about...

submitting your mods to OpenBeOS (which already has working *attr tools in the cvs) ?

Interesting... Need more attribute using software!

It's nice to see someone working with attributes. I always felt that BeOS underused one of its own most useful features. We need to get more attributes in use in more programs. Thanks for contributing to the community!
