I use Zeta here and the new version 1.3.6 seems to work but I cannot change the codecs and the screen resolution.
Always the pointer will go back to the default one.
Nor can I change the options with this Versions. The Version 1.3.4 is still on the same system and working...

Mr X,
The encoders included in beos (cinepak, Photo-Jpeg, Indeo 5) are working just fine over here.
Indeo realtime is not. DivX encoders are also working.
the encoders you add (in beos r5) are in /boot/home/add-ons/media/encoders, while the system ones (which you shoulnd't touch) are in /boot/beos/add-ons/media/encoders.
Please try to delete BeScreenCapture settings (/boot/home/config/settings/BeScreenCapture) and try again. At least, the other guy who complained about this version not working fixed the problem after deleting the settings file, as there were some problems with old settings laying around. The version 1.3.6 I'm going to upload (just some moments in the future) should fix this settings problem anyway.
About localisation:
I guess I could add it, either using the opentracker locale libraries (but they aren't ready), or using my own stuff (but I'd prefer using an existing solution).
Although I guess there's not much to localize anyway, beosfrance :P

Hey, Some things I need to point out, for you to fix for me :)
WHen I hit stop recording, the app quits instantly and the icon in the tray just stays there and does not exit.
Seems like my DivX codecs got recognised... but there are too many of the same.
screenshot:
http://illhostit.com/files/3563934635234481/toomany%20codecs.png
What codecs are TESTED and work with this? Please include them with installation guide next version.
Next version could you make it so it can save the movies in a certain folder, instead of files all the time? And have an option to do auto nameing like cameras do.
Also add in the readme where the codecs are located in the BeOS so I can delete them or add new ones.
Still, it hasnt worked with me yet. Maybe next version.

So, is there any plan to add a localisation system like SampleStudio was having even before Zeta and its locale kit ? (in fact, a system that fits zeta and BeOS users)

I think I downloaded the hybridDivX package from bebits to get the codecs. I can't remember, though, as it has been long time ago.
For the crashing bug: can you tell me which options did you select, what is the configuration of your screen, etc. ?
It's better if you send those stuff via mail, as the bebits talkback isn't adequate for bug tracking.

I like the new record red circle flasher and the post processing option, as well as it saves the output dir.
when I went to stop recording, it crashed and this is the debug:
loading symbols
segment violation occurred
BBitmap::Bounds(void) const:
Bounds__C7BBitmap:
+000c ec1bd518: * 1840d9 fld 0x00000018(%eax)
Encoder:
and the icon in the systray stayed on when I closed the app.
and one other thing ... what codecs work with your program and where to get them. It is too bad you don't say that anywhere !

The codecs you see in the list are the ones which support the screen depth and the size of the clips you selected.
Not every codec supports every possible configuration.
As for remembering the output file name... yeah you're right, it's annoying it doesn't do that. I'll try to implement it in the next version.

BTW ....is this another Linux port or what?it dosen't do a bad job of capturing mundane tasks...but when BeOS decides it needs to switch screen resolutions...it kinda drops the ball(as is the case with a lot of games out there)if it is a native BeOS app, then it should follow thru no matter what you may throw at it.
(as is the case with a lot of games out there)

Hello I am using R5 pro with BONE.
When I start this application sometimes in the 'codecs' pulldown menu I can only choose one codec and not the other (like I cannot pulldown the menu)
All I have is Cinepack Compression and Indeo5 Realtime Video. I just installed Hybrid DivX and it does not show up in the output format or the Codec area.
I cannot record video- If I use any of my two codecs, same output is made.
With and avi output format I get a 0KB file and with the Quick Time format I get only a 2.62KB file.
Please in the next version make BeScreen remember the output File name location, it is fustrating entering it everytime I load it.

You're right. Though, the problem is, that if we pass through the app server, the screen data has to pass through ports, and that would even be slower.

Yes, but I guess you still grab the entire screen, as there is no way of telling which portions of the screen have changed since the last frame was grabbed. That's what app_server hooks could help with.

Actually, I'm already using a "shortcut", since I'm not passing through the app_server to get screenshots.
I'm, instead, using BDirectWindow and grabbing the frame buffer directly.

I assume the main guts of the app is just copying the whole screen as fast as possible?
Speeding up should be possible by adding this somewhere slightly deeper in the app server, so only the areas of the screen that are actually updated need altering in the output movie. Something for OBOS to think about.

Ok, I had some time to test my own app.
The CPU usage is very high here too on an Athlon 1200. I think this is normal, since the capturing is all but a cheap operation (I get about the same cpu usage in HyperCam on Windows 2000). Though, probably there are some things I could do better (I'm no guru).
Hope that replies to your question.

Tried this app with Zeta RC2 and it works fine (no lockups), but the CPU usage is VERY high, making the whole system very slow while it is capturing. Is this normal?

A new version is almost ready, and, mostly thanks to mmu_man, it features an option to capture the mouse pointer, and to resize the output movie. Basically, it's all done, I just need to do the GUI for those options :)
Sorry if it took so long, but I lost some time to find a way to avoid a deadlock.

What about audio recording? Eg record everything that's going to output.
This app could be great for tutorials also, with speech it'll be so much faster than reading docs or help files. Maybe this is the killer app for BeOS! Which OS has got this kind of help-system?

Jess, have you got plain BeOs R5 ? I can't see the problem you're talking about. I can always capture how much I want.
P.S: I have some beta version of this app. If you want it, come on beshare (TycomSystems). Next release will probably feature a more accurate timing (as you'll have seen, it doesn't completely respect the choosen FPS), some GUI change, and an option to minimize the app on recording. Oh, and I hope to put in the video resizing capability Axel asked about :)

So I graabed this & gave it a whirl. Same problem so I tried a smaller section of the screen and it seemed to do fine. So I then tried big again & it worked. Thanks, now for those with Capture cards & cams think of all the "I'm picking my nose with my mouse pointer" videos that can be made!

Well, as now, the app works like this:
There is a thread (B_DISPLAY_PRIORITY) which takes screenshots, and another thread (B_LOW_PRIORITY) which encodes them to the disk. So, once the capturing is started, the movie is already being encoded, and there's no way to resize the content :P. I took this approach because, otherwise, it would've sucked up memory really fast (well, actually, it sucks it up very fast anyway :PP). BTW, as already 2 people told me it captures only up to 2 seconds, I think I'll have to release a fixed version very soon.
P.S: thanks for your appreciation :)

How about adding a possibility to resize the screen contents before encoding them? You could even try to rip the bilinear scaler out of ShowImage (dunno if that's fast enough, though) :-)

What you're experiencing with BDirectWindow is strange.
Does the file size become big if you keep the program recording for a long time ?
Btw, a note: capturing the whole screen can be very slow.

I like the idea a lot. Wicked for demo purposes. I have found using bdirectwindow it records for like 2 seconds even if I don't hit stop recording for a long time. Might be something with the encoding cuz it's all blurry too. I'll play more but over all I have to say very cool. My UI site used to have screens labled "See the OS in action!" Now I can REALLY show it in action ;)
Thanks,
- Jess
