Seems like a compile/link issue under this DevEd 1.1.
Anyway, I'm glad my compile works fine.
You may try the "official" Beta 4 binary that is, contrary to what the page header says, is available here:
http://www.bebits.com/app/3919
See that label beside the download button? Yeah, it's Sir Mik/Tim official Beta 4 package. Give it a try, as I guess it's more recent than the source code you and me have compiled.

Tim/Sir Mik,
Could you update the BeTeX bebits page so that the latest version says it's Beta 4, not Beta 3?

Turns out that I don't need to host the BeTeX Beta 3 zipfile as the Beta 4 is 1) available and 2) still online here:

I've build the source code as available at http://tm.kaldience.com/dir/members/stargater/LaTeX/BeTeX.zip on a BeOS R5 + BONE + haiku's required GCC toolchain, and it build and runs fine.
Maybe the BeOS DevEd 1.1 comes with a broken GCC toolchain. It's an old version of this "distro". Since, GCC have been stabilized by Oliver Tappe.
Anyway, it's hard to help you without having the more detailed errors messages BeOS should throw at you when your own built BeTeX binary crash.
Meanwhile, I now host misza's zipfile, so you could download its BeTeX Beta 3 here:

> well Philippe, depends on what code you have.
The one available in BeTeX.zip file at the URL I've provided bellow. I'm sure it's not the latest, indeed, but when compiled it seems to be a more recent version than the BeTeX Beta 3.
Anyway, I'm glad you're working/you've worked on this app. Please move your source code to osdrawer.net or similar, so everyone can eventually NOT lost the code anymore. And maybe could take over you.
After moving to an all new hardware machine, and fear more than one time that I had lost all my beos disk(s) contents, I'm considering hosting some of them there too, for the same reasons.

Hey guys,
well Philippe, depends on what code you have. I was reworking the BeTeX code a couple of years ago, because Misza donated them to me. However, the editing broke the code and its nowhere near completion yet. I was planning on releasing the code under MIT/BSD licence when it was finished. I could have another look at at least making the code build and then upload it to osdrawer. But I must say I'm not really interested in continuing the development of this app, especially because I haven't used LaTeX in ages and my time is very limited ATM.
regards,
Tim

What BeOS says when BeTeX crash?
Click on the "debug" button on the crash alert box and on the Terminal window which open then, type "sc" command to get a stack crawl.
I'll try to rebuild from source and test if it works. Maybe the BeTeX source are in "work in progress" state, and the crash is all logical.
I should have an old BeTeX binary from misza on my system too. Stay tuned.

Thank you for providing another download location. LaTex works perfect, BeTex doesn't at all. I've tried to run 'make' via Terminal, but the compiled file crashes. Any ideas?
(I'm running DevEd 1.1 on an Intel III, 866 with 768 MB memory.)
So far, thanks a lot.

Hey,
The makeinfo script is "buggy". Initially it does:
#!/usr/bin/env"
which is obviously wrong in a beos installation.
It should be:
#!/bin/env

Hey,
Found this which greatly ease things regarding beos and LaTeX.
http://www.unruh.de/DniQ/latex/unicode/
Since beos (by default) saves all documents in UTF-8, it is a bit of a hazzle to not be able to use UTF-8 in LaTeX documents. It would be nice if this package could come with beos tex packages by default.
Regards
/Procton
PS: Finally having a good TeX distribution for beos absolutetly rocks!

In the next few days there will be a php page in place that manages my download loads, thus I did not specify any particular filenames.
Further, I want to extend my offer to anyone who needs hosting space for their Zeta/BeOS applications. Contact me at >chaosdna AT shaw DOT ca< if you need a mirror.

The problem is the ls-R file in the texmf tree is broken (see the updated info on the tetex bebits page or download again the binaries and follow the README).
BeTeX is progressing very nicely, but there are quite a few things that need to be done to make it useable for release (mostly things to do with the textview and lack of decent ps or dvi viewer in BeOS (I haven't been able to compile the ghostscript gui viewer with a recent afpl ghostscript yet). BeTeX will most likely be released in "demo" mode, with save disabled and such, until it is registered and I provide you with a keyfile like soundplay. So it will be released, as a demo, with all the necessary things along with it, latex2html, tetex, ghostscript, etc, hopefully in a nice easy install package. latex2html has been ported and is working fine, ghostscript is working though with no gui previewer at the moment (though it does have important things like ps2pdf, etc), and tetex is fine (afaik).
I'll be updating the betex homepage soon (http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~brentmor/) so keep your eyes peeled. :-)

I get the following error when I run pdflatex:
kpathsea: Running mktexfmt pdflatex.fmt
fmtutil: config file `fmtutil.cnf' not found.
I can't find the format file `pdflatex.fmt'!
Both files already exist in /boot/home/config/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c
What can be wrong?
P.S.: I was actually thinking of writing a Tex editor for BeOS, and it's great to know you're already working on one...Good luck and finish it soon!

Thanks for letting me know Arwen. I am working on an integrated environment for editing, printing, compiling latex documents. You can see its current status here http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~brentmor/ . It is a big application and you'll have to be patient, it is progressing quite nicely though. When I do release it, I'll release an updated (i.e. more packages compiled in) tetex, latex2html and netpbm(needed by latex2html), and probably some ghostscript.

Simply - "HTML-like" editor in one tab/pane, with buttons for most generic tags, parenthesis balance checker and so on. And output viewer in second tab/pane.
Sure, i did it through all my past just in two terminals under X-Windows, but such app maybe helpful too.

I don't have time myself to test it with TeTeX port, but AFAIK it worked fine with older UniTeX port.
It should be only a matter of settings the root path of MetaFonts folder, I guess...

A GUI would almost defeat the purpose of TeX. There are other word processors out there that can export to TeX, the idea of TeX is not that it does anything special that other systems can't, just that it does it cleaner and easier. While I agree it would be nice to see my output change live as I change the TeX document, I don't think that's possible at the moment (since TeX must be "compiled"). Perhaps it may be if someone creates a DVI viewer.... Either way, thank you, misza, for your work on teTeX and BeTeX!!

I have no intention of providing a wysiwyg approach (such as lyX - I tried this app on linux, it confused me! (and no I didn't read the docs, but the whole experience of opening that program discouraged me)). With my app you can compile and preview the document in PDF with two clicks of the mouse, it's integrated into the gui. Because it is so easy to preview there's no point trying to implement wysiwyg and besides, it would unnecessarily clutter the GUI, something I don't want to happen! It would also be a bit slow too, rendering the new text every few seconds (it would have to be compiled by latex/pdflatex, and what if there were errors?). In Short, not a good idea. I'll keep it simple :)

Hi,
I've also been thinking about a LaTeX editor for beOS...but haven't got the time to start on one, did you also consider a wysiwyg approach? that would be nice...sort of word perfect idea...one view with the a kind of rendered text, and one with the LaTeX code below,

I'm also working on a native editor for LaTeX/TeX documents. It aims to be like http://www.miktex.org . I have made quite good progress already, a nice screenshot can be found here:
http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~brentmor/BeTeXScreenShot.png
I have to implement Syntax HighLighting, more toolbars, and a few other bits and pieces before it is ready for prime time but at the moment these are the things that work/features implemented:
-Loading/Saving/New Documents
-Compiles document with pdflatex in the click of a button (see screenshot)
-Loading that pdf file created in BePDF
-Multi-Document interface.
-Basic toolbar that inserts lowercase greek symbols into document. Uses one of the postscript type 1 fonts that came with tetex and BeOS can recognize.
-Basic TextView facilities cut/copy/paste/undo/selectall
If you have any suggestions let me know :)
misza.
