I have thought up an interface last summer (yep;) that would offer a dynamic, resizable layout along a grid, with an easy way to adapt existing apps to it, but without the need for yet-another-proprietary UI (instead it consists of standard BViews and BWindows), which is the reason I dislike PersonalStudio's UI-efforts, which looked rather unprofessional and was quite uncomfortable to work with IMO (being fix sized!).
Ironically, this UI was planned for a video-editing-app;) I did not know about VBL! back then...
If I find the time and there's interest, I'd work out the design and code a prototype (I want to use something like this in my apps anyway;).
Anyway, first "Render" should actually produce something;) And D&D seems a bit sloppy...
I did not experience a crash though (on Zeta SP2), only no results...
This is a great, long awaited, sadly long unknown (since '99!) project that finally brings some hope to my BeOS-phile video-editing-efforts...
PS: Anyone working on a Canopus ACEDvio or simply OHCI Firewire-driver? :)

Jace and all,
I don't like the “windowy” design either. I have some ideas on redoing it but at the moment I'm totally focused on getting the software to be functional.
Personal Studio did offer a very nice package for UI and features. OTOH: I personally like the idea behind Macromedia’s Dreamweaver -- having a professional and an amateur UI selection. I also like their floating, docking and collapsible windows.
I want to take this project one small step at a time. If you have ideas please share them. I plan to really hammer the UI once the basic functionality is in place. So, before VBL! 1.0 is released I’d like the UI to be redesigned and thought through.
I don’t seek to see if it can be done. I seek to see if it can be done together.
Thanks,
Bill D.

Jace,
Good points, as usual. Through your many comments about user interfaces here and there, you have shown a very good eye for what an interface should be like, so perhaps you can put that talent to work for the project. You should join the VBL! project as the Graphics Designer!
I have no doubts that if you are behind it, VBL! (or any other app, for that matter) would end up having a better interface!

| I think a more integrated and less "windowy" UI would be far better |

This app project is another BeOS app to suffer from too many windows. Too much function, not enough planning in design. See PersonalStudio for a nicer environment (which itself could use work, but hey, I have to give a BeOS example).
Not to knock the effort. I'm just being honest about my impressions of the design. I'm interested in tools that work well and with ease. I'm not interested in a development project for the sake of accomplishing the development. So that's the position where my comments come from.
Thanks for your efforts and for trying to contribute to the overal BeOS software library. Good luck with the development. I hope this goes somewhere. BeOS NEEDS content creation tools VERY badly.

Since this is a work in progress, some people (if not all) will experience crashing on Render. However, after working with app for awhile, this is what I have seen.
A user can import video files (avi, mov). One can drag video files to timeline and arrange them and trim the length. One can drag a transition and/or filters to the timeline and change settings by double clicking on transition/filter. One can set Render options. However, when Render is clicked, the app will crash.
However, if you drag a video file to the timeline and then drag a filter underneath it and then Render, it will save out to a file. The filters work pretty good. I do not think that any video file with transitions are able to be made.
Hopefully, some people will want to dig in and help Bill with trying to correct some of the quirks.

I do not have DANO installed so I am very intested to know the changes that need to be made. I am using BeOS Max 3.
I don't own Zeta yet but I am considering it. $$ is always a factor. My B-Day isn't until Aug. :(
Your comments and testing are very helpful. Thanks everyone!

Hey all, whatever happened to source code of Post Magic that was donated to BeUnited.org awhile back? Maybe some collaboration between BeLive and FilmPost could be done. I think Nathan Callender is caretaker of Post Magic, anyone know how to get in touch with him?

While I'm not the origional creator of this code. I am glad the origional coders gave this to me and it can be freely given to the BeOS community.
Download, compile, explore and enjoy!
