Your driver works for me quite well (R5 Pro). I hope I never lose the archive when I have to reinstall (though that'd be a first in the past 5 years).
Do you plan to port the driver to Haiku someday?
Do you think it sensible to put the source up somewhere outside yellowtab?

Even though it's been awhile, I'd like to point out that I did receive the driver after Marcus noticed he had missed my payment email from PayPal and have been happily using it since. Works very well in fact; no problems whatsoever. Gotta love how I can install the driver, restart netserver and use the ethernet card immediately.
Keep creating drivers for BeOS, Marcus, your work will open Haiku to a much much larger audience and for that I can be nothing but greatful.

I sent the driver by email a few minutes after I

I have to admit that this was a 5 day delay, but
I simply didn't notice the email before.

You've done a great service to this community by providing us with this driver, regardless if it costs. 15 EUR is -not- a bad price for the first and only gigabit ethernet driver (that I'm aware of) for this operating system. Not to mention the fact that it comes from an OBOS developer and has the possibility of eventually going open source ;)
I won't be purchasing it because I don't have a card that uses this chipset, but I can tell you if I'm ever in the market for a new card I will find one based off the RTL8169.
One more thing ... why do so many BeOS apps make it so close to the top in Google. Do a search for "RTL8169" and this driver will be at the very top. Amazing.

I have an integrated net card Realtek RTL8201BL and as far as I know, there are no drivers for this card in BeOS. Next (or maybe this) month I'll get an access to one network and I'm thinking of buing another net card, for which there is a driver in BeOS. It doesn't really matter for me if I spend my money on new card or a driver for card I already have.
I've heard somewhere there are drivers for Linux. Maybe somebody like Marcus can port them to BeOS?

At he moment payment can only be done via Paypal.
Other payment options might be available later,
I'm looking into that.
The BeBits page has been updated with instructions.
Delivery will be done by email, but since I'm at
the Begeistert meeting during the following weekend,
it will be delayed until Monday morning.

Personaly, I wouldn't have a problem paying 15 EUR for a driver, if the card was something I wanted to run. If I could find 1000mbit modules for my switch at a resonable price, i'd be picking up cards for the machines in my house also.
And I wasn't talking directly about running Linux. I was talking about the "everything is completely free" culture that surrounds it. Many people in the Linux community seem unwilling to even consider paying for software. But then again, I have never liked linux, or the community. I've always been more a FreeBSD person myself. :)

It's not a shame, and yes, there is a lot of Linux people who use BeOS too. I myself started using Linux back in late 1996 and BeOS about 2 years ago. Both me and my gf have Linux background.
I was just wondering what is the highest price people would pay for a driver if they really want a driver and there is no free one (yet). Is it 5 EUR, 10 EUR, _this_ 15 EUR, more or less?
As I already said, I have nothing against giving money to developers, but limiting use for sites that require specific models of credit cards (like Kagi, PayPal) is not the best way to handle payment.

Marcus,
I'd like to start off by thanking you for writing the gigabit driver. That's an area BONE enabled systems can move into now, and start to feel comfortable in. With the new wave of home computers coming out, and gigabit catching on, this is a good foothold for a completely supported system.
Everybody else here has addressed the "concerns" that are cropping up regarding this driver. It's a shame that people are unwilling to pay 15 EUR for a vital system driver. What is wrong with people anymore that they refuse to pay for software? Has the GNU/Linux crowd really gotten that popular that we think that all software must be free? Personaly, I've paid for the software I use in the BeOS world. There hasn't been a lot i've wanted, but I purchased BeServed products, and I gladly paid for R4 (and was given a legal copy of R5). It's a shame anymore that people come to this wonderful community, and then complain nonstop about developers taking time to develop much needed software!
If you want everything you run on your computer to be free, install HURD. The rest of us will gladly pay for a well crafted peice of software, and continue to support the developers that put time and effort into contributing to the community in positive ways.
Once again Marcus, thank you very much for the driver, and for all of your hardwork on the Media Kit for OpenBeOS. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next peice of software you release.

If you can't afford the driver then maybe you could get a beer instead. I've no idea what the big deal is that someone wants to be paid for their work, if all that's left in the BeOS community is a bunch of freeloaders, then any software developer should think long and hard before releasing their apps, either free or paid for.

IF you can buy such a card, the 2nd card for a other computer, and the (probably) needet switch. As well as the computer hardware that you need to use the bandwith such a card offers - than you can also pay for that driver.

No-one can stop the community split, as it has already happened a long time before Zeta RC1 was released and it will continue until Zeta R1 and OBOS R2 are finished.
When those two releases are finished it's upto users if they want to re-unite, there is nothing developers can do after that.

The driver is distributed as a SoftwareValet package, just double click it and it should launch a step-by-step installation which should be pretty simple to follow. If not, then you're going to have to be a bit more specific as to what the problem is that you're experiencing.

To whom it may concern:
Please do NOT dicourage anyone who chooses to work on driver development for BeOS in any form!!
I have most BeOS varients of the last 4-5 years and have my likes and dislikes/reservations about each, and in some cases, the background or motivation behind their creation. They all need drivers!
If any driver does not work or is too expensive, the the rating, amount of downloads, and whether or not it is still being downloaded much (ie: recent downloads) will tell you a lot. Let them live or die by personal choices as to use/value and stop cutting all of our throats!
I quote from above:
Talkback Guidelines: Talkback is where you can post questions, comments, and tips about this bit of software. All the usual rules apply; in general, be polite, watch your language, and that sort of thing. We're running a family web site here. :-)"
Encourage anyone you can. We need these drivers. I don't give a D*mn if you use it or not. I may never need it, but someone might badly enough that the cost is worthwhile to them. With comments HERE sticking to technical questions, requests, and feedback about actual use (instead of opinions that are worthless for running hardware with), we might just end up with a few drivers and people willing to work on more.

Drivers are rarely free. Yes, you can find free drivers on this website. But when you buy a piece of hardware and it comes with a driver it is NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, free. The same goes with drivers that come bundled in an operating system.
When you buy hardware or software that includes a driver you are paying the distributor to pay a programmer, to develop that driver. Since RealTek has not payed a programmer to develop the driver your money went towards the Windows driver. This means that MadScientist, unless he has excessive amounts of free time and money, has to step up and ask you to pay him directly for his hard work.
MadScientist, your work has not gone completely unnoticed or unappreciated.
~~Guildencrantz
