Ok, charging for drivers is no bad thing, assuming:-
1) The developer offers some kind of 'warranty' on their code, eg, bugfixing on report.
2) They offer something over and above the norm, eg, how about the WOL functionality, or Zeroconf?
We've got to support any remaining devs, and assuming this mad scientist is Dave Powell, any of those who've been around for a while need a little encouragement to stick with it.
I did my stuff for free, i didn't charge because a) it was freeware, and b) I couldn't actively support it.
So if you have a problem with devs charging, *at least* take on board points 1 and 2 above.

I have no problem paying for a driver. In fact I did with the binkjet drivers and I would for this driver if I had the equipment (it's 10Mbit/s here). I've only seen one comment to question this driver being commercial. Isn't it a bit hysterical to call that a fight against developers?
Weather forecast: Storm in a teacup ahead!

I think that's an vital idea that have been posted here long time ago. I hope a lot of people will register. Developers don't life from air or love, they life from food and money just as anyone else. Users have to remind this fact. And if there is no money there won't be any Applications in the future - always remind that.

| If it works, then whats the problem? Seriously? |

Many niche OS's (I'm thinking Amiga here specifically) charge for drivers, and driver suites so why not BeOS?
If it means that this developer writes more drivers as a result of this income, who the hell are we to complain?
|
|
| This is very disappointing |

I'm very disapointed by the reactions that I received so far.
This driver is the only one that supports one of the most widely available Gigabit Ethernet chipset, the Realtek RTL8169. Neither the free driver that Realtek offers on their website, nor the other Realtek driver that was written by Be Inc. does support it.
The demo version allows those interested in the driver to test if it supports their card. You don't need to pay before you have verified that the driver is working.
I don't think that 15 EUR is too much to ask for a Gigabit (1000 Mbit) Ethernet driver.
This driver hasn't been tested with BONE yet, but it should already support it. BONE, Dano and Zeta should be able to use this driver.

... that not many developers are left in the BeOS scene. Too many people who fight against them.

Would it be possible that you would write a nFORCE2 RTL driver for the 8201BL chipset?

Why charge? Well, why write it at all?
Drivers are software, they are some of the hardest software to write for many reasons. People who work hard deserve to be paid, or compensated in whatever form they prefer.

If you have a realtek based network card have a look at this site as it has alot of drivers for realtek network cards written for beos.
Note: They are ALL free.
Second Note: This is the officail Realtek website.
