This looks like the kind of app I've been wanting, a free-form notes app with a tree structure, like Keynotes for Windows. It crashed for me on startup, so I can't be sure.
I paid for BePlan, which includes a nice Memo program, but it only uses a flat list box, not a tree.

I really like this app - if only it was stable

Hi

Notes is THE application I've been looking for in BEOS - the ability to store data in a fold out text form database is just what I need.

However, I'm having stabilty problems. If I add a group, then add another, it seg faults on me. Not sure if this is locale issue or some other problem. What is the best way for me to provide you with debug data???

Thanx

I don't understand what reasons do you search? I already said what they are:

I want so,
I need just so.

These are ALL reasons for ALL my actions about Notes and People programs.

Do you want to prove me that it is more effective for me(!) to use just People than Notes??????

I used People. But it is better for me(!) to open one database file than some People files and have many opened windows on screen. (Why not?)

As for BeBits. Why must I keep program out of it? Because it is not standard? But where are standards? And why must I follow them if I can do better (for me and may be for somebody other)?

More than 100 people have downloaded Notes. May be somebody will find it usefull.

And about standards. MS Windows is standard. So why don't you agitate to use just it???

So if you still have ANY question about my actions you have answer: author of Notes WANTS so, NEEDS so and it is CONVENIENT for him.

Hey, there's no need to get all defensive here. I'm just trying to have a discussion with you regarding the choice of datastorage.

"I tried to use such programs. They are buggy and I didn't see open-source among them"

Making one from scratch wouldn't be very hard. I'm too tied up with work right now, but I've got more free time after my deadline, I'll certainly take a look at it then.

"May be. Why not?"

I didn't say that you shouldn't I was marely asking a question. I'm trying to reason why you chose the sql-database over people-files. I asked since it might be for cross platform usage.

"I see. Is is not convenient to use People files to ME. This is main reason for ME. I don't force anybody to use or not to use my app. I made it for ME before all."

Yes, and I think it's great that you are making apps for BeOS, we need lots of them. And I understand that you made it for your own needs.
However, I still can't see any reasons why People-files wouldn't work. And if you made it to use People-files then more people would be able to use it and it would maintain the one of the standard formats of the BeOS.
If you really don't care about other people using it then you wouldn't have posted it on BeBits would you?

"And you can't (I hope) force me not to public it."

No, I can't and I don't want to either. But when I think someone is doing the wrong thing I try to reason with him or her. Is that such a bad thing?

"May be in next versions. I planned this."

Would it make sense to convert people-files to a database if you don't have anything to convert?

"There are some people-replacement apps..."

I tried to use such programs. They are buggy and I didn't see open-source among them (in opposite case I would probably made something on basis of one of them).

"Well, are you going to use them outside of BeOS?"

May be. Why not?

"I can't see any reason why people-files shouldn't work for you."

I see. Is is not convenient to use People files to ME. This is main reason for ME. I don't force anybody to use or not to use my app. I made it for ME before all. And you can't (I hope) force me not to public it.

"If you really need to use the sql-database on other OSs then just make a "sync"-app which exports the peoplefiles to an sql-database on the given partition."

May be in next versions. I planned this.

"So I have almost empty form which I all the same must look through to find needed field. It is simply not convenient to me."

Well, that's the whole point of making a people-replacement which allows you to add/remove hide/show fields. You could hide all the other fields and only show name and email for example. This would be very easy to do.
There are some people-replacement apps out there allready but I haven't used them so I don't know if they have such a feature, but possibly one of them is opensource and you could just modify that one.

"Second. Attributes used in People files to store data are not saved after file has been copied for example to CD. It is also unconvevient. :("

Well, are you going to use them outside of BeOS? If you only need to use them in BeOS, then just burn a BFS CD. If you want to burn a regular one, just zip the peoplefiles. That way it would be no different than burning a databasefile to the CD.
The idea of using a sql-database is also inconvenient because no other application knows about it. You wouldn't be able to find your contacts in any E-mail app for example.
I can't see any reason why people-files shouldn't work for you.
If you really need to use the sql-database on other OSs then just make a "sync"-app which exports the peoplefiles to an sql-database on the given partition.

"So I have made such program. I needed just such program."

While I appreciate your effort, I fear that making such apps public will destroy one of BeOS strongest points, which is having general standard files which are easily accessable by any application.
Sticking to standards is a good thing as long as it makes sense, and it still does.

Try to remove all language files from /home/config/locale/Notes/ (may be with directory). I think error arises when program tries to load data from English file (if english is preferred language).

What version of SpLocaleApp.so do you use? Try to use that from Notes package file (there is version 1.3.3).

What about Pentamino program? The way to make menu in Pentamino is exactly the same as in Notes (error as I understand arises while program is making menu).

Hi,

I have encountered same bug as Jace:
segment violation occurred
BResources::GetResourceInfo(unsigned long, char const *, long *, unsigned long *):
GetResourceInfo__10BResourcesUlPCcPlPUl:
+001f ec240c17: * 00687883 cmpl $0x00, 0x00000068(%eax)
Notes:

I'm using R5 on a 12mgh atholon with 786 mg of ram
Like Jace I'd like to use this as a database would be very helpful for my Phd research. More utility for BeOS

"I'm not sure about which limitations you are talking about. Do you mean that "Peoples" issue is that it has a predefined set of fields?"

Just this. For example I need to fill only e-mail field in People file and this field is on the bottom of form which I am filling. So I have almost empty form which I all the same must look through to find needed field. It is simply not convenient to me.

Second. Attributes used in People files to store data are not saved after file has been copied for example to CD. It is also unconvevient. :(

So I have made such program. I needed just such program.

Hmm

I personally think that it would be better to make a People replacement that allows you to add custom fields. Such a feature is really simple to add and would allow you to do the same thing without trashing the whole concept of people-files.
