A nice game. In some resoloutions the graphics look a bit strange. But overall very good and without a glitch. It also comes with three nice themes.

Installation method...

With this release we are using the normal installation method again for SteGOmann.

That is, because each version for each plattform has its own package now.

Greetings!

Zeta "issues"

Sorry guys, I think that *my* issues with this installer come down to corrupt system files (as a result of a KDL some days ago triggered by a USB transfer error... seems I have finally experienced Zeta's ill-famed "corrupt USB device" issue ;-)

I know there are some disk checkers out there, but since they aren't all that great, I have now added yet another little app to my growing list of BeOS-related writing tasks...

Thanks particularly to Das Jott for helping to try and diagnose this install issue (sorry for apparently wasting your time in the end, though).

Thanks
Mark

This new way of installing breaks pretty much any uninstall app that uses the installation logs. It also renders the Installation log pretty much useless.

Installation on Zeta RC3

A lot of guys, who tested the package before, are using Zeta RC3. Me too...

Another question, that may be important:

Does or did the folder Games already exist in
/boot/apps on your Zeta before you installed SteGOmann?

Yep, that was exactly the problem. (broken link, /boot/var/tmp where the game goes).

This is RC3 (are you testing on RC2, or perhaps using a non-zeta shell?), and I have found some issues with scripts on this version: if there is no empty line at the end of a script, for example, the script runs forever - this has hung other installers I've tried. yT have fixed this for the next release, but just adding an empty line at the end of the script might solve this one...?

Thanks for tesing it again :-)

Unfortunately I can't reproduce that here.

The main thought for the new TEAM maui packages is,
that the SoftwareValet first installs the files into
/boot/var/tmp ,
then a script is started and moves the files to the right place.
In case of choosing Zeta-install, the app-folder SteGOmann should be moved to /boot/apps/Games.
So, the link should point to the right place...

We tested this package on a few machines and it worked as it should.

If I got it right:
You executed the package, chose "Install on Zeta" and clicked on "Begin".
After the installation has finished, you have a broken link in your Zetamenu and the app is placed in /boot/var/tmp?

Broken link after install

The symlink (at least on Zeta RC3) seems to be broken with this package. Assuming it is intended to install Go into /boot/var/tmp (which is what it does at the moment), then the symlink is pointing to the wrong place (/boot/apps/Games/SteGOmann/Go/Go)...

Thanks for the game though!

This is a nice article about this issue, even if it is a bit japan centric:

There is no "standard copyright law". The world has a lot more countries than just yours. Even inside europe, where laws become standardized every day, copyright laws differ widely. For example copyright laws in the USA and europe differ widely, too.

Not really

You cant exempt standard copyright law in a EULA. What I do in my home, on my computer, with a program I legally downloaded (and thus "own" a copy of) is noone else's business. I can run it on any platform I chose, modify it to my hearts content and even reverse engineer it if I so wish. None of this constitutes a license violation.
As the author you can of course make it very hard for me to do these things but it's still not a violation for me to do them.

You could also...

...just respect the will of the author. At least, it's a present, so you should just accept it as it is.

In most countries the licence conditions are valid. And in nearly all countries the condition not to redistribute the package in modified form is absolutley valid. Those who are meant know what I'm talking about.

Using this program on "unsupported" systems isnt a license violation.
Random conditions in end-user license agreements doesnt magically gain legal validity just because you put them there.

It's not my team. I'm just part of it.

Thanks for your suggestions. But if the licence infringements don't stop - and explaing others how to violate the licence is part of it - implementing them won't be necessary.

Dano work around...

Well, if Peter and his team want to block out Dano, PhOS and BeOSMax users, at least they could build the code into the application instead of using an installer script. Anyone familiar with BaSH scripts and how BeOS's Installer handles custom installer scripts, knows to look in the /tmp directory for the script that detects what flavor of BeOS you are using. The end user then ccould read the source of the script then proceed to modify their system so the script will execute the installer.

For the record it checks whether your BeOS distro has /etc/decors direcotry and / or whether is has /system/addons/Screen\ Savers directory

I'd recommend Peter and his team use a char[] name check in the c++ code to verify wheather the BeOS distro is running BONE or not.

By design it does not install on DanO, etc. Offers instant crucifiction to users of unethical OS's. No-one expected the German inquistion....here it is.

This not the right place to discuss legal issues. Please read the original R5PE-licence and try one of the BeOS forums for details. If you ask on yT, I might answer there (given I find the time). But I think it also was already discussed there.

P.S: If you visit the project home of BeOS-Max on sourcefourge you can also get some info on this issue.

The SteGOmann package you can download right now should install properly on every R5 and Zeta installation.
Please try the newest.

I also get the OS error running MaX on this box and it's legal afaik, just a bootable PE,which I like because I can slap it on boxes I'm building and have most of the apps I use with the install,I own R5 Pro and have it running on several machines and don't plan on buying Zeta till it's done.I can see an issue with PhOS or Dano but why MAX?

Problem fixed!
