Thx for your answers,
I tried to simultaniously copy a large amount of files from mounted drives to different folders. And I have no problem with that. Only the performance is not that fast. It is about 2,6MB/s. But no crash or something else. What schould I see if I have the discussed problem?
Thx, for your patience.

2 s_d: the problem is low performance of the USB 1.1 bus. Real SCSI disks work lightning fast in comparison with this USB scrap.
2CJK: we have already a lot of discussions about this - the problem is "non PnP" nature of the BeOS SCSI susystem.
2kraton: Try to check the performance on copying big files simultaneously. If your system has the discussed problem you'll see this. If not - you are lucky. :-)

Hi,
with real scsi disk with beos installed on it, i never get the usb device in mount menu, i need to go to driveSetup an rescan, but that hang driveSetup ;(
After installing BeOS on IDE and using scsi as data partitions only, all work fine, but it's a problem come from the scsi in BeOS.
Other that, i never get problem with usbkey and USB harddisk
I use BeOS R5 + Bone7a + USB patch.

Ok, last night I tried the "cp" command in the terminal and it worked like a charm. A bit sad that I can't do it in tracker, but at least I can access my jetflash with BeOS :-)
So the only way with Tracker NewFS at the moment is to use the terminal "cp" command to do your thing...

Hm, I use the LocaleTracker, with OpenTraker.NewFS and OpenTracker 5.1.5.
So I hope it is not the same with Tracker New FS and theirs derivatives?
So I have to use BeOs original or plain FS.

1. I'm using an external USB 250GB HDD.
2. Somebody (fyysik?) tried to boot from USB flash drive and have some success.
3. Tracker New FS and theirs derivatives has problems with usb_scsi. BeOS SCSI subsystem doesn't support standard SCSI CAM specifications correctly. It tries to ignore error states I report to it. NewFS Tracker works with filesystem in more intensive multithread manner as usual Tracker. But USB mass storage specification has single thread nature. That's why NewFS hangs... Do not use it with usb_scsi. :-))

What is more likely to work with an external Hard Disk Drive? USB or Firewire? Since i am planning to buy a external hard disk case for my 5 1/2zoll Hard disk. So I wont need to buy an expensive Notebook. I use BeOs 5.03.
Anyone tried the sharkon USB-Stick with 1GB or less? What to do to make the external drive, if supported make to boot BeOs 5.03? Do I need only the supporting BIOS Motherboard, or have I write some code to the USB Drive in order to make Beos boot sequence find it?
What about copying BeOs to an USB-Stick will it work? Will Programms work with BeOs?

I am also trying to get my digital camera(olympus c-220) or memory card reader 1 smartmedia sandisk and one is a part of my lexmark p707 printer that can read 4 diffrent types of memory card. but neither of the memory card readers or my camera is recognised.
Can any one help at all?

1) Unfortunately it is USB-only Module.
2) The Module deal with low-level data operations: cluster, sectors, bytes. It has no knowledge about high-level operations: filesystems, files, folders. Those tasks are performed by other software - by BeOS filesystem drivers. AFAIK there are both HFS filesystem supprt and FAT/FAT32 filesystem support in BeOS. AS I have said - this device looks standard and should work.
Good luck.

For the filesystem, i think it's depend if the IPOD is first initialized from a MAC or for a PC. At this time, the IPOD is formatted and should be under HFS if done under MacOS.
In my case, it is FAT/FAT32.

As I can see the following: http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=2737
it uses standard 8/6/50 mass storage class. There are should be no problems from driver's side to get device visible under BeOS. But what about file system? HFS?

The mentioned "copied files" are the result of the previous two steps you made, meaning they are both to be found at /boot/home/config/add-ons/kernel/drivers/bin/.
From there you make the symbolic links.
The "->" simply signifies the resulting path after making those symlinks.

Hi, thanks for linking to the USB patches.
However, I don't really understand those steps in the readme:
make the following symbolic links on copied files:
usb_printer -> ../dev/printer/usb/usb_printer
usb_raw -> ../dev/bus/usb/usb_raw
Exactly what am I supposed to do? I use the latest release of BeOS Max. Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem as you describe, but I'd never tried the "cp" command so I always blamed my hardware. "cp" works as you describe, which leaves Tracker as the problem. I had tried both the tracker that came with Dano and TrackerNewFS 2.9, and had the same trouble. I just installed OpenTracker 5.2.1, and can now drag'n'drop large files (25MB) with no trouble. I hope this helps.

for alpha release it is great quality. i run Zeta Rc2 and cannot use tracker to transfer anything larger than a few KB, but using the command line 'cp' works perfectly.

A wonderfull job, kudoz...
Both my digital camera Fuji finepix s 3000 and smsc cardreader worked fine. these devices are connected to a 4 port hub and i've tested 2 differend type of memory cards for access: CompactFlash and xD with a xD-SMC adapter(xD is Fuji specific)
It reads the Camera filesystem without probs from either the camera directly or the memory cards.
Drive setup sees it as a DOS filesystem
It still isn't perfect but you're on the right track here, it makes BeOS sluggish with large file transfers, works fine with multiple small files and links.
With the known exception from drivesetup and tracker woes during large file transfers it's a good alpha release.
Used OS is BeOS R5.1d0 Latest OT.
Anyone iterested in my usb dev info results, please contact me at Zathros@3rd-rock.net and i'll send it to you.
Great work keep it up.

Nobody can see what is going on your PC. :-( Probably the log file can help to understand the source of problem. :-) And the description of your device. Have you read ReadMe.html?
>Upon reboot, I
>could not mount the SD card anymore (through my
>cardreader).
Does the filesystem on your SD card broken after this? My module know nothing about filesystems it works with low-level blocks of data. Looks like the FAT filesystem addon has played a bad joke with your card. something like the non-finished synchronisation.
> I then tried this on another computer and
>the exact same thing happened. After the crash, then
>after reboot, the driver doesn't work anymore.
No. "Breaking" the driver in such way is not possible. The reboot of the system "resets" the driver. The filesystem can be brocken after not correct switching off your SD card... :-|
>This happened on both Zeta RC2 and Zeta SP3 machine.
>Wierd!
Yes. That's bad. AFAIK Zeta is a NewFS Tracker's derivative. I suspect the NewFS Tracker tries to use the disk in very hard manner - to increase performance. This is not good for "sick" BeOS's CAM subsystem. It works for real (quick) hard drives but fails on low-speed devices like those USB storages. sometime. :-(

This driver worked GREAT for me for a while...however...
I was lately using this driver to copy mp3 files (3-9MB files) to my SD card. After about 3 songs were copied, Zeta slowed down heavily...I couldn't really do anything so I had to power off. Upon reboot, I could not mount the SD card anymore (through my cardreader). I then tried this on another computer and the exact same thing happened. After the crash, then after reboot, the driver doesn't work anymore.
This happened on both Zeta RC2 and Zeta SP3 machine. Wierd!
