System hang on USB storage access
 By tigerdog - Posted on July 2, 2004 - 22:39:37   (#13192)

I've installed the driver (under Dano) using defaults. When I place an SD card into the reader, the card mounts. I can move very small files (<15K) onto or off of the drive. As soon as I try to move anything larger, the drive access light stays on solid and the file transfer hangs. Moreover, while I can sometimes get the system to shut down, it will not restart until I either unplug the reader's USB cable or power the entire system off and back on.

Suggestions, please?

This device looks as supported. Can you, please, obtain the log file of working session with this camera and sent it to me on <imker [@] gmx.li>? Thanks.

Is this right?

Hi, usb_scsi driver works great for me on some USB flash drive, but not on my NikonCoolpix 3100 (mass storage mode). Any ideas? I left the deafult settings for the driver as was... the usb_dev_info says:

Vivitar ViviCam 3750 Works

Hello... Just a piece of info about an additional camera that works with this driver... A Vivitar ViviCam 3750 (A 3.1 Megapixel Camera, around $100 USD at Wal-Mart) - Works perfectly on Zeta RC2 (Don't know about RC3, or any patched versions of R5.03)... All I had to do was remove the native Zeta USB SCSI driver (as poster earlier in this forum) reboot, and instant sucess...

Thanks to everyone for this driver and for the tip... Now perhaps I can get my wife off of Linux and onto a real OS!

Cheers!

Re: Mount speed

To increase the speed of the mount menu - reduce the number of virtual devices in the driver's config file (see readme). I set both devices and luns to 1 as I only have a single usb mass storage device (a digital camera) - the mount menu appears much more quickly.

WooHoo! (Zeta RC3)

Yep, you were right there - removing the Zeta usb-scsi solves the problem completely - and with Zeta this release, it *appears* I even get USB2.0 speeds!

It also seems to speed up the Mount list from the desktop. I will of course let you know of any other things that pop up, but once again - extreme thanks for a great driver!

Actually, I reckon you should get money for this - plenty of other driver writers charge a (usually small) fee for their work. Set up a PayPal account or something, and I'll give you a donation - 10 Euros or summat.

What do others think about this? (Hope I don't start a flame war..!)

Looks strange.

Have you tried to disable Zeta's usb_scsi?

To do this rename the following file:
/boot/beos/system/add-ons/kernel/busses/scsi/usb to /boot/beos/system/add-ons/kernel/busses/scsi/usb.disabled or remove it from this directory.

The way you can obtain the log file is described in details in ReadMe.html from my module distribution archive.

It is a good idea to send me the log you'll get to my e-mail address <imker( at )gmx.li>. Thanks.

Zeta RC3

Sadly, using this driver with the latest version of Zeta no longer seems to work for me :(

Zeta RC3 does not work with my USB flash drive. Unfortunately, unlike with RC2, this driver doesn't make it work either.

(On the plus side, Zeta now works fine with my Olympus C-350 camera in USB1.1 or USB2.0 ports from a clean install \o/).

Of course you can only fix this once you have a copy of RC3 yourself...

If it will help, I can run the logging utility?

Also, on a different note, I have noticed that the driver seems to take a very long time before bringing up the Mount drive list from the desktop. It did this on RC2 as well, though.

Thanks
Mark

The problem is that USB stack version 3 from USB patches doesn't work correctly with devices, that want support of USB version 2(that one that plain R5 has). Yes - there is a kind of backward compatibility layer for version 2 in USB patches, but looks like it doesn't help. I suspect, that there are no life possibilities for old (v2) devices under USB patches at all. =-\

one or the other

zharik,

looks like the Tablet Driver from Becasso that resides in /boot/home/config/add-ons/kernel/input_server/devices does not play well with USB Patches. I remove it all works well, however tablet is quirky. If I re-add it, KDL. Unsure whether you can look into this or not. Let me know if you need any information.

Great work, my cheapo 256 USB drive works great, however
I can't get to work my Nikon Coolpix 3100 in Mass Storage mode. USBCommander returns same protocol and class numbers for both devices. I believe there is one entry less in endpoints configuration for Coolpix (1 input 1 output)

Otherwise, well done!

thanx, I seriously thought I'd never get my digital camera to work in BeOS. I'm uaing BeOS R5.0.3

Found the culprit
 By ernestTX - Posted on June 18, 2004 - 06:51:53   (#12950)

It seems that after I did complete fresh install of BeOS 5.0.3 and I began to re-install my applications, I found the culprit that was throwing me into KDL - BeCasso's tablet driver.

I first installed Wonderbrush, no prob. Then Refraction, no prob. I then installed BeCasso; however, at first I did not install the Wacom tablet driver. Everything seemed to be chugging along fine. However, I had this nasty problem that I was unable to setup Wonderbrush as the photo edit app in eXposer. Tried and tried, but I could not figure it out. It was always using BeCasso to edit. So, finally, I wanted to use my Wacom tablet. So I unmounted my SD Memory reader and plugged in my tablet.

Knowing that I needed some tablet preferences, I re-installed Becasso. This time I opted to load tablet driver. It went OK. However, when I opened Tablet Preferences, kdl land. I rebooted. KDL land. I rebooted, safe mode and looked to see where tablet driver was and removed it. Rebooted and back to desktop area.

Will keep testing away. I love a good mystery. :)

Success finally :)

Ok, basically nothing beats just starting over from the beginning. I did a fresh install of 5.0, updated to 5.0.3. Removed any cards that would cause IRQ conflicts and then install USB Patches. That worked. Now onto the USB Mass Storage driver. Rebooted and got KDL. Then edited settings file for init 2 thingy and rebooted. Back up to desktop. Now to plug in my card reader with SD card full of pictures from JVC GRDVP3U. Right click to Mount and it showed up. Able to access card and I don't see any lag with accessing picture files. Thank you so much for this driver and for the help. This is why I love BeOS and its community. You get a huge YOU ROCK!

- R5 means R5.0.3 of course.

- Unfortunately I have no more ideas but trying to aply patches on fresh installed R5(R5.0.3). Probably some previously installed drivers make problems.
Note that only patch-1 is required for you.

anybody have more ideas?

Ok let's see...I searched for any usb_mass or any other usb thingy. Deleted USBCommander and USB Deskview just to be sure.

I am only trying to apply patches, not usb mass storage driver.

Am I correct in referring that this only works for BeOS 5.0, and will not work with 5.0.3?

You shouldn't apply all the 3 files in the patch. One of them sends R5 to KDL. I don't remember which one though. It must be in a readme or something...

This module doesn't know about files, directories and filesystems at all. It works on lower level with raw device data... Probably your msdos filesystem addon has a problem.

This patch works fine with:
Zeta
Tyan Tiger 2460 motherboard
SanDisk 1GB USB memory

The only problem i have is that the SanDisk is reconised as a DOS 16-bit volume, by this i am not alowed to copy files with long filesnames.

than go to

and run

ln -s ../../../bin/usb_raw

Forgive me, but I have tried instructions for usb patches several times. I do believe, I may be doing it wrong. I copied all files to appropriate places (i.e. addons/kernel/busses, drivers, etc.). However, the last steps to create sim link to ../dev/ is throwing me off. Could someone provide clear instructions on how to do this and where to place, copy files. I have ASUS A7V133 motherboard. What I have done has thrown me into KDL each time. Thank you.

I know that dano has USB support in the kernel, but I didn't know there is a patch that would add the support to r.5.0

No, it don't
It needs updated USB stack (v.3) - so called USB.patches to be installed over vanilla R5 PRO.

in your system BIOS? If you have such an option and you did not set that, try this...
