PE does allow you to install it seperately in fact, and boot off a CD - you can just burn PE's image.be to a CD.

This OS rocks but one thing I noticed is that it is virtually BeOS Pro Max! PE never let you install, go over 500mb disk limit. BeOS Max does. Should it be renamed
Also the website has been down for months. Any news when it will be up?
7-ZIP mirror still wanted!!! (even though i could always boost my broadbans speed! :-))

Great... 3.1 works awesome. Hewlett Packard Vectra Vei8 (550 P3/384MB/30GB) with BeOS 5 PE Max edition for x86 absolutely rocks, end of discussion. All I had to do was hit enter a few times before the BeOS installer splash came up changed the video mode and presto the Matrox Millenium G200 AGP I used to have problems with on BeOS5 are now a memory of the part. Keep up the good work community! Thank's for such a great and reliable release. I think I'm ready to publish some opinions and comparisons on my web site in honor of the retired warhorse we all have grown to love.

This is a copy from a webpage but it took some time to find and I thought it would be easier if it was located here instead.
First make sure that you have cdrecord installed on OS X eg use fink to get it: >> fink install cdrtools
Make sure you are located in the directory where the files floppyCD.img and BeOS5PEMaxEditionV3.iso are.
If you have a regular CD-RW drive do the following:
%cdrecord dev=IOCompactDiscServices speed=4 -eject -v -data floppyCD.img BeOS5PEMaxEditionV3.iso
If you have a DVD/CD-RW drive do the following:
%cdrecord dev=IODVDServices speed=4 -eject -v -data floppyCD.img BeOS5PEMaxEditionV3.iso
speed should be set to whatever number you want to record at. You can then watch the progress of the burn. It will eject the disc when done so everything is pretty well taken care of. If you payed attention to the Readme1st.txt, this method is very much the same as the Linux burn.
A word of warning. I do not know if superdrives will work with cdrecord, also you may or may not get damage to your software, hardware, or person and I take no responsibility.
Happy burning and install

It might depend on your partition setup - if you've got anything complicated going on the boot loader may not be able to find the OS.
Try installing bootman after installing MAX and see if that will let you boot.

I just installed BeOS Max onto my 1.5gb hard disk and it is working fine on the install bit (about 1/2 an hour) but when I tell it to boot up from either the floppy and go to the hdd or boot from the hdd it says: Can not find operating system. Press Enter to retry. and it stays like that for ever (the floppy doesnt show the hdd). When I did it this way in my emulator it worked fine and I am doing it the exact same way! Any help
PS. On some systems the IdeReplDisk starts up but it doesnt get as far as the last icon with a kernel panic. If you get this download BeOS 5 Personal Edition (NOT MAX EDITION) and use the floppy from that.

Not to 'ba$h' or anything - You guys have great suggestions...
But
You CAN burn PE5 Max to a cd in Windoze (if you have Nero)
The .iso in the zip is for Linux or Be, but if you open the MaxV3.cue file with Nero it should recognize it as a "Cue Sheet" with two data tracks; A 1mb track and a 620mb track. It worked fine for me!

Do search for ffmpeg and libavcodec and remove those from BFS.
Then put "disabled" components back.
I also experienced problems with drivers and addons based on ffmpeg.
You may add all this later

This is my first usage of BeOS, and everyone pointed me to this edition. I've installed it, but it was hanging after the desktop loads. Safemode was perfect. I've started mucking around, and found why it's doing that.
I had to disable the "media_server" from /boot/beos/system/servers/media_server
I've disabled it by creating a directory called
/boot/beos/system/servers/disabled
and moving the file there
$ mv /boot/beos/system/servers/media_server
/boot/beos/system/servers/disabled
I've restarted the system and now it works (but without features). My system is in fact Fujitsu Lifebook N (P4/2.8Ghz/ATI Radeon Mobile 9000).
I was wondering what could be making BeOS to crash, and I went and started media_server from the prompt. It gave me this:
$ media_server &

!!!! There is a Readme file in the ZIP. There is NO setup since it is a bootable CDRom. You have to burn it on a CD following the instructions found in the ZIP file.
ALSO there are instructions on the www.beosmax.org homepage.
You CANNOT Open the ISO unless you have BeOS. It is a BFS ISO. Not a Fat32.

I spent forever trying to get network access working, because for some reason the integrated NIC on our Dell Dimension 8100 showed up as some other 3com than it really was. Including the 3com 920 driver from BeBits would've been a huge help.
Oh, one other thing, too: There's a BeTip floating around about increasing your max clusters to 16048 or something like that in a kernel config file somewhere. That might help with a problem I encountered, which was getting KDL'd while installing to a partition with block size 4096. Setting it to 1024 and retrying had it work perfectly. I suspect changing that config file would've let me do it at 4096, but you may have to test that. :)
Otherwise, nice distro! I really like the default desktop background, and you included a huge range of apps within one CD.

Wow, what to say - I was blown away. My previous installation was Developers Edition 1.1, so this distribution is a major improvement :-) Install and config of the BeOS is one of the easiest I have ever encountered.
BUT
I'm still not getting any sound :-((( I have mobo integrated Ensoniq 1373 and that didn't work. Then I plugged a colleague's SoundBlaster Live! into a free PCI slot and installed the drivers (EMU10K1). While media_server recognises SB Live! as well as Ensoniq chipset, I'm not getting any sound at all, regardless of which one I select.
I'm getting desperate here. Please help me out...

I bought a copy from www.iso4linux.com (yeh & I know it is free to download, but I had to much trouble trying to burn it in windows, so I just bought it.
When I installed it I was really overwelmed because it installed so easy & it saw all my hardware,my Athlon,my usb Ethernet connection,my tuner card,Sony CDRW,Modem,Sound card,my sis 630 video card. It was easier then any other OS I have ever installed doing a dual boot on and the boot loader worked excellent alongside Windows XP Home, but when you first install it, make sure you let BeOS Max cd partition the drive and inialize it in the be file system and also make sure that you have the right hard disk. But anyway I love it and it comes with a tone of good software, it eaven has mozilla on it and lots of software to do graphics, audio recording, audio players, different themes, it is the bomb and I mean it. They know what they are doing & I hope people just keep creating software for it because BeOS has night died, it has been reborn. Try it people,Iknow you will like!
Have fun.

I've got a nVidia nforce2 chipset too (ABIT NF-S v2.0) and have trouble to install or run the live CD. It stops in the boot screen. Booting from HD and run installer works fine.
(note: same problem with all distros, so I guess it's a kernel problem)

Hi Vasper,
If you wait a few weeks more until the final release, you can probably 'upgrade' to nVidia driver 0.10. I'll release it within a week tops, so about week later the status should be 'certain' ;-)
Best regards,
And thanks for your appreciated work :)

There is known issue with older BeShares, so including them isn't safe. Current version is 2.26 and the issue should be fixed. It also contains more translations than 2.24.
