Unfortunately I don't have my BeOS/Zeta installation available, and I also don't have the latest version of Zeta at all.. so I can't check what causing the problems with ICQ. I'm guessing it's a missing .so, perhaps someone who's handy can check which .sos are used/missing with the latest Zeta?

dear mikael,
i have checked all the libs and found that i have installed them properly.i have also compared that issue with my working zeta 1.21 installation.everything is fine.
i miss the icq entry in /config/settings/im_kit/addons/protocols !
no fresh or reinstallation added this entry.
(manually copying my running zeta icq entry does not work, but shows up in im kit preferences without possibility to configure )
the question here is now:
how can i get the missing entry ?

I'd guess that you're missing one of the required libs for ICQ, since it finds the ICQ add-on but fails to load it. Maybe there's some problem with different versions?
I'm not at a BeOS computer now, so I can't check, but it could be possible to run "ldd /boot/home/config/add-ons/im_kit/protocols/icq" and get a list of the libraries it's linked against and if something is missing.

On April 19th I downloaded the latest IM Kit. I was kind of 'scared' to use it before, so first let me say: props to all you developers who contributed to the IM Kit. What a native BeOS geniosity!
All of the clients I use (MSN, ICQ, AIM and Google Talk) work, except for the Yahoo! IM client. I know I have the right username, because I tried it under the YahooMessenger application, which works. The IM Kit just won't log me in. In the IM Kit, I'm using the Yahoo protocol dated Wednesday 14 December 2005, 09:52. Can anyone explain why it doesn't work with me?

clieven; The message that it cannot access /boot/beos/system/add-ons/im_kit/protocols is fine. It checks both the user addon directory and the system addon directory. The error message says "user" for both though. That's now fixed in the depot.
Try starting the im_server and then wait until it's completely finished loading (It'll stop spitting out text messages). Then right click on the addon and change your status. See if that helps.
"Not doing anything" is often indicative to a misbehaving addon. If you have addons installed that you're not using / don't have settings for remove them from the addon directory (~/config/addons/im_kit/protocols). My first guess would be the ICQ addon, if you have that installed.
I'm not sure when we split the InfoPopper off, but make sure you have that, and the im_infopopper, installed and running. They're very good for telling you if action is going on.
Also try removing all the protocols but one and add them back, one by one, until you find the culprit. Just to be sure, verify your settings are correct.

i've experienced this myself on a frequent enough basis on r5+bone. no idea what causes it or how to fix it in the source code though.
you could try using process controller to kill im_server and then restart im_server by right clicking the deskbar icon.
eventually all of the protocols will be listed and you'll be able to log in.

So, I installed the IM kit components in the proper order. In the preferences, I have my login set for AIM, Yahoo, and MSN, and everything else seems to be in order. However, it just doesn't do anything. When I right click on the icon in the Deskbar and go to "Set Status," the only thing listed is "All protocols" and not actually any protocols. It also uses 40-60% of my processor power (on a dual P3 1.13 GHz machine), and won't quit unless I kill the process.
An older version used to work for me approximately a year ago, but then gradually stopped working (im_server needed manual restart to run, and eventually just didn't run).
Any thoughts or anything I can try? Results when started from Terminal follow...
$ cd /boot/home/config/servers
$ im_server
helpers 2006-02-10 09:09 (low): load_attribute: Read 189 bytes of data
helpers 2006-02-10 09:09 (debug): Read (im_settings) from (/boot/home/config/settings/im_kit/clients/im_server)

1. Get and install "Support libs" and, if you want them, "GPL protocols" in either order.
2. Get and install "Base package" (I guess I should update the base pack to include the fix.. *note to self*)
3. Get and install "Bug fixes" if you use MSN.

Also, when installing, get and install the two .pkg files first, then get and unzip the zip and run the included Install.sh. If you don't do things in the right order, you might not be able to load the protocols until you've installed the libs and restarted im_server!\
Do I start with "Support libs" then "GPL protocols"
do I still need the "Bug fixes" and if I do, must
the bug fixes be installed before or after the base package?

Two things you might find handy, expensivelesiban;
a) You can make Tracker queries and place them in ~/config/settings/im_kit/queries - The deskbar icon will show these queries (and the number of results) under the Queries menu of the Deskbar icon.
b) You can create a file ~/config/settings/im_kit/_MIDDLE_CLICK_ACTION_ this file will be executed when you middle click / command primary click on the icon. I have it linked to a Query Template. I think if the file doesn't exist it launches ~/People in Tracker

Cool! Just got the IM Kit working and I like what I see so far.
It would be good if you could get to chatting with chums from the deskbar icon. Maybe there is a way to do this, but I haven't yet come across it. Going to People and right clicking on your contact seems like a roundabout way of getting to where you want to be. It is alpha, so I'm not really trying to come down to hard about it.
Even something as simple as double clicking the deskbar icon and it loading up the people folder would be something, although I'm sure a more elegant solution could be possible.
I wouldn't say I'm a IM addict, but it has become an important communication medium since R5, and it's great that there's such a comprehensive solution being developed. Kudos to the devs.

Group chat (chatting with more than one person in one window) isn't implemented yet.
If you have a single person with multiple protocol connections, all of the messages from that person will show up in the same window, regardless of which protocol it comes from.

It's plodding along. There haven't been any significant changes lately but there has been lots since the last version was posted.
The best place for information about stuff on the IM Kit would be either my blog (http://beos.bong.com.au) or m_eiman's blog (Which I'm not sure he'd want posted).
We've been talking about a new release however. Just need to fix up some niggling little things and update the documentation and the install scripts etc.

libsocket.so is part of the BONE networking system, which is required to run the Kit. Zeta has this by default, and it can perhaps be found in illegal ways for R5.
A new release is something we'd like to do, but that "Real life" thing has prevented any serious amount of coding for quite a while, at least for me. All I can say is that there aren't a -lot- of things we want to fix bfore the next release, so it should be "soon" :)
About ICQ: it seems the lib we're using for ICQ doesn't support the notification thing, at least I haven't found it. We're going to switch to our own OSCAR code instead of it sooner or later, and then we should be able to add that.

Hi Mikael!
Is it possible to integrate the compatibility to the "ICQ Status Indicator" (see http://www.icq.com/features/web/indicator.html)?
That would be very nice :-)

Furthermore, I´m looking forward to your next release, including the fix of that MSN problem.
Could you tell us when we can count on the next release?

In each protocol folder there's a text file, README or some such, that describes what's needed to compile it and how to get it. Make sure you get exactly the versions that's in the readme, or it probably won't work.
