Feature requests...

Hey Sir Mik,

Just a couple minor tweaks that would be cool to see while you're changing up the code. The X-style focus-follows-mouse thing within the window should be optional IMO--I have hotspots set up for "don't active the screen saver" so I often put the cursor there while I'm staring at what I'm writing and thinking about it, but then when I want to type again I have to hit the mouse over into the window again. Same when you're about to insert a symbol and want to double-check that the cursor's in the right spot. The other minor thing would be when you go Alt-5 to regen the PDF file, it would be handy if it auto-saved first, since presumably if you want to regen the file you want to see the changes you just made to it.

Thanks and keep up the awesome work!
Kev

Small update...

Just to let you guys know I'm working on this...I'm currently cleaning up the code so that it all uses the same coding style and changing some class names to make the code more apprehensible...also rewriting the preferences system...it's more work than I though but I hope to finish it soon and release Beta 4 with the source code under MIT. At that point I will have a look at the other LaTeX products here at bebits and will host them on an other server! Note that this can take some time because I'm also working hard to get another application of mine(Bme) working...

regards,

Tim

It works!

(I've got those two lines in .profile too BTW.)

Yeah, launching "BeTeX &" from Terminal (even if I then close the Terminal) makes everything work perfectly. Cool beans! (I'm puzzled as to how that could be too, but this is quite handy in the meanwhile. :) )

Thanks!
Kev

This is going to take longer than I thought....

I'm trying to build BeTeX from the sources now...however those sources are very messy and the program is crashing sometimes...therefore I've got to clean up the sources first before I can get something decent I can publish. I'll keep you posted,

P.s. this is the moment to post suggestions for new features in BeTeX

Ok Jan, I already was thinking about that like I said in the previous post...I couldn't reproduce it also...so first thing next morning I will start analysing the code and try to improve it! btw, any news on setting up the SourceForge page?

Other users encountered this problem aswell. I was not able to solve this problem as I could not reproduce it. Somehow the path is not set correctly, even if it set in the .profile. Try to get rid of the script call or add the complete path name when calling the executables.

Cheers

Jan

I looked at my own .profile no line like yours in there, but another:

export TETEXDIR=/boot/home/config/teTeX/bin/i586-pc-beos
export PATH=$PATH:$TETEXDIR

please try adding this to your .profile maybe it helps?

as to what happens here...let me look into this issue somewhat further...I think I'll get rid of the script and try to call pdflatex directly from BeTeX...however...I took over this app from misza and haven't looked at the source code ever since, so probably I have to do some investigations to understand the code...

R5 here

...and the script is produced in /tmp, containing:

#!/bin/sh
cd "/data/school/courses/CO 350-003"
echo "\$ pdflatex A6Kev.tex"
pdflatex A6Kev.tex
echo "(Press Enter To Continue)"
read
exit 0

...which is almost exactly what I would use to do it, except I'd use the tab key which would make it go more like this:

cd /data/school/courses/CO\ 350-003
pdflatex A6Kev.tex

...which works fine every time. I've got

export TEXMFCNF=/boot/home/config/teTeX/share/texmf/web2c/

added to .profile...for the longest time I had to monkey around with this and texconfig init and some other stuff, because I was trying to use a newer version of TeTeX I think it was (the download link for the older version was down...ended up hunting it down). In the end I have all the standard versions of everything though. Not sure what other details would be useful...

Thanks,
Kev

Same problem

Yes same problem here. I have pdlatex perfectly working from Terminal but no luck with BeTex's PDF button.

Currently I simply keep a terminal window open and keep compiling using that...

Sorry I couldn't offer any solution yet .... :)

help with setup
 By Kevin_Field - Posted on October 31, 2005 - 23:11:15   (#18175)
Current version when comment was posted: Beta 3
Hi everyone...

I finally got all the dependencies and their dependencies installed and set up for this, but for some reason I can't figure out how to work the PDF button in BeTeX. I can run pdflatex from the terminal in any directory and it works fine, but pressing the button in BeTeX has a terminal pop up and say:

$ pdflatex A5Kev.tex
/tmp/textopdf.sh: pdflatex: command not found
(Press Enter To Continue)

And one other thing that doesn't work that would be slightly handy is double-clicking on a .tex file in Tracker. It opens BeTeX but BeTeX doesn't actually load the file.

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
Kev

.tex file not found by pdflatex
 By Dryer Lint - Posted on April 23, 2005 - 09:31:18   (#16412)
Current version when comment was posted: Beta 3
When I try to compile any tex-file into a pdf via the toolbar-button, I get an error message by pdflatex saying that the file couldn't be found.

I can compile the file in the Terminal, though.

So why doesn't it work from BeTeX?

Any help much appreciated.

P.S.: misza, if you ever read this, please come back and continue working on your apps! Especially BeTeX, it's too good to be left alone.

P.P.S.: Did anybody else commence working on the source?

I've moved on to the greener pastures of linux (where I can do real work).

The source to betex, as well as latex2html and tetex, can be found here http://members.iinet.net.au/~misza/BeOS.

The BeTeX version may not be the latest, I don't know, but it wouldn't be the oldest by more than a month or so. I'm releasing the source freely incase anyone wants to use it for anything, there's quite a interesting uses of the BeAPI in it, it might be of use to someone.

I also suggest that users use the vim for BeOS in combination with vim-latex, it's a much better ide than I could write.

Chapter tree
 By Sir Mik - Posted on March 15, 2005 - 05:04:29   (#16136)
Current version when comment was posted: Beta 3
Hi Misza,

I'm currently using WindEDT for my Latex editing...although it's interface is crap and nowhere near BeTex, I have to use it for spell check. But I discovered a nice option that would be a great addition to BeTex also...A chapter tree! parsing the \chapter, \section and \subsection commands and turning it into a clickable tree that brings you to the section you clicked. I don't think it would be that difficult to implement, what do you think?

Oh I also discovered a little bugs...sometimes characters at the end of a line, don't appear...

regards and keep up the good work,

Tim

Thanks for a really promising TeX-editor (the first I think) for BeOS!
If I may be so rude, a colleague is currently using a really useful TeX-editor only available for that other OS - I think some features could be really useful to have in BeTeX (while I generally prefer good, simple design and usability over features):

http://www.texniccenter.org/front_content.php?idcat=42

Of course BeTeX is just at its infancy, but I wanted to give some inspiration for future updates:)

Thanks for bringing TeX on BeOS up to date,
Hugh

Thanks for the Feedback Tim!

There are some quirks at the moment yes :-)
At the moment BeTeX only can open files with text/x-tex filetype and .tex extension. I'll probably add text file support later, but I would prefer to keep it .tex file only.
Toolbar buttons are disabled when necessary (using node monitoring :D). I have to update the docs to explain all this: You can create new files and load templates. These documents are unsaved and you need to save a document for these buttons to become active (you can't compile a document that hasn't been saved). The buttons are updated according to what files are present.

I'll have to work out the focusing issues :-) I have it setup at the moment so there is a continuity between the file selector, toolbar and textview such that the mouse wheel can be employed.

Brent.

BeTeX doesn't load old tex files

Current version when comment was posted: beta 1
Hi misza,

I tried you're BeTeX program this morning, and have found some weird errors. First: it doesn't load an old stylededit file with tex code and the .tex extension, no matter what I do...(maybe I have to change the mime types), would be nice if BeTeX also loads plain text files. And! the toolbar buttons seem to be disabled on weird moments...Also it's a bit weird that the selection dissapears as you move into the menu...if you want to apply a menu operator on the selected text, you can't see what text you are applying it to.

but all and all, it looks like this will become another kick-as BeOS/Haiku app,

keep up the good work,

Tim

Thanks for the Feedback BiPolar!
-Small icons wouldn't be too fun, but I'll look into it.
-I'll add the colour of the tooltips to the preferences along with possibly the colour of the toolbar headers.
-I chose the listview because tabs look damn ugly when you have more than a certain number of docs open. If you feel restricted by space you can resize the gui like beshare (try dragging the split panes around and right clicking on the draggers to change their orientation).
-Integration with BePDF and Net+ is something I've thought of but I'm not too keen on it. It's why we have workspaces :-). Both BePDF and Net+ have refresh functionality, and I have discussed with Michael the possibility of Node Monitoring in BePDF to detect changes to the PDF and refreshing if there are changes, I should chase him up on it.
-The Quitting bug is something I haven't looked at fixing yet, I'll get onto it.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Mmm, what can I say? Impressive!!!

Albeit I haven't tested its TeX <--> XXX features (can't find my tetex backup), the editing features, and overall feeling is amazing. Well done!

I have a couple of suggestions (mind you, based only on my personal taste):

- An option to "Use small icons in Toolbar" would be nice.
- I believe you _really_ should change the background color of the tooltips.
- I would change that orange gradient on the background on the left to something easier to read (very-light-blue to white, and black-to white when pressed maybe?)
- Nice to see it use a multidocuments interface, it's highly welcomed, albeit I would preffer having little tabs just below the toolbar (giving more room on the left to those editing functions).

Another thing I'll love to see is a better integration with BePDF and Net+ for previewing, by using replicant views inside BeTeX.
Oh... wait, BePDF doesn't implements a replicant view... I'll have to suggest that to Laplace.

Bug?
Sometimes BeTeX doesn't quit right after you close it. If one waits enough... it quits without the need of a little 'help' from ProcessController.

Thanks for your work!
