Burning a bootable BeOS CD?

Ping Leonifan: I think Helios will be very greatly improved just by a re-write of the manual, which looks gorgeous in lovely pdf but the writer lost interest after "Installation" and skimmed over actual use. There's nothing on the topic of bootable CDs. I finally succeeded by using cdrecord in the terminal, following instructions I found on the BeOS Max site.

In the abscene of me having any idea how to do it with Helios either, use Be's CD burner and burn the CD bootimage as a data track and the BeOS image as another data track. Not quite what you wanted, but it works...

Hmm. I'm trying to use Helios to create a bootable CD with a boot.img file created using makebootfloppy -CD -preserve, and an image file created using Helios' BFS create option. I'm completely at a loss to find the right mix of options to create a bootable CD. Can anyone help?

@gmiranda:

Firstly, does this drive read cds in BeOS (ignoring Helios)? If it cannot read discs in general, then I think it is unfair blaming Helios for that!!! If you mean the Helios "Read CD Image" menu command, then please let me know - does it simply fail, or partially read and then produce a garbage image?

Secondly, does this same drive work fine in Windows (e.g. with Nero)?

Thirdly, please report bugs to the email address on the main page for Helios. I promise to fix anything I can reproduce - and to reply personally to any emails I receive. This way, I can also keep proper track of all bug reports.

(btw: I do not have a LiteOn drive to test, I would have to rely on a donation of a drive to fix that, since I have never found LiteOn drives to be reliable, and I will not be buying one anytime soon).

Also, if I misunderstood this post, please clarify - I want Helios to work on as many machines as possible before the 1.71 Final (though your problem may well be cdrtools, rather than Helios).

To my surprise, my pioner dvr-108 WORKS (reads, writes - CD-RW, and blanks CD-RW, I didn't even bother to try DVD+RW), while my liteon 48x24x48x still doesn't (it does not even reads cds). Great job, if you want any testing, ask me :P

Thanks Double_S :-) I have emailed you, but thought I should answer here too.

I have personally never used SCSI drives, but this is obviously a requirement now I am maintaining CD burning software. I will be looking to get an adapter card soon for my PC.

Anyone else with SCSI problems (relating to Helios or cdrtools on BeOS) please get in touch - particularly if you have a SCSI drive to donate!!

Best regards
Mark

I read your claim for reports and teasing your ego.
Well you can bet Maurice Michalski and you did/do a great job. Thank you very much.

I have some CD-R burners I would be glad to donate for testing, if that could help you in any sense.
An old PLEXTOR 412 Caddy and a HP 8100 (with SONY modified firmware). I was unable to get HELIOS to clean a CD-RW on this later baby. Do you have a SCSI controller?

Contact me by e-mail (it can take me a few days to respond)

Please could anyone else with simliar (or better or worse!) problems as AlienSoldier send me an email at the address on the Helios main page - I promise to investigate the issue.

Also, if I suspect a particular drive to be the issue, I will always offer a reasonable price to purchase them from you (in the event of failure). It seems I am most likely going to have to maintain cdrtools on BeOS, since the author has no interest (but I'm not sure I mind it like this ;)

Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback so far - anyone who helps make BeOS the premier CD burning / copying platform will get credited in the Helios / cdrtools files! (If I miss your name out, remind me sharply via email).

Thanks!

having my drive? no

trying with command line, i wanted to try once and was confused, drop on beshare so you can help me with it and i would do it. I don't care about screwing another cd for that one.

Yes plextor was better, i have a friend with one and i tested helios with it (a a Maurice release) and it worked. It scraped cd sometime but we pinpointed that is was related to bad size reporting so the cd lacked space sometime. This must be solved now as the calculation capacity seem to have been redone (the auto calculating work now since many release).

Do you know is cdrecord is able to burn successfully on the command line?

It would be hugely valuable if you could test this for me (give me your PayPal account if you have one, and I'll pay for the pack of CDRWs ;)

I am pretty sure this is a cdrecord issue - not Helios itself. But I would like to track it down.

I would also:

a) Like to have your drive - would you consider selling it to me?
b) Recommend a Plextor :-) They're only GBP80 for a DVD verson these days..!

Thanks for the report.

i scraped another CD :). It start to burn, then after 4-5 sec it fixate the disc. After that the burner is completly lock up until a powerdown/reboot. It always was my problem with helios (yamaha 8424).

btw there is no need to have the priority at 16 while the app do is cd image from file on HD.

I guess i will have to use be burner to burn helios image until you know for sure what cause this prematured stop.

@procosm:

Thanks for the cool feedback! Good to see things working out with the new versions of Helios :-)

And on another R5-related note:

Users of Helios may have noticed that since 1.71, translations have not worked at all unless you have Zeta.

Well, I have now written a brand new translation manager, which uses the same translation files as Zeta. So with the next release, translations should work again for everybody :-)

Caveat: True, you will have to manually choose your language (from a nice little dialog I'm adding), since on-the-fly localisation only exists in Zeta (and presumably Haiku, when it comes out...) - but having only one set of resource files should make everone's life easier!

Also: thanks to everyone who has helped with translations, bug testing, etc. in recent months - you know who you are (and so will everyone who reads the Helios About box ;-)

Also: as one final note, once I have written a HOWTO, I will release the code for my translation manager on BeBits, so that those people writing Zeta apps will have less to do in able to also support the many international R5 users out there.

Thanks!

Helios - bugs, burning and making BeOS great!

Hi again

I am currently writing a (hopefully very detailed) Test Plan Specification, which I will make available at some point on BeBits. After all, all of us want BeOS to ultimately have a superb CD/DVD burning solution...

I want to get all the current features solidly working for as many people as possible before adding new ones, so all those who wish to help get Helios to that point of greatness, drop me a line at the email address on my (leonifan) Helios page, and I shall send you the Test Plan directly - maybe even early versions if you wish, to get things moving - and so you can recommend changes.

As an enticement, once Helios is stable, some of the features I wish to add are:

- CUE support
- Disc verification (an essential overlooked feature in Helios, I feel)
- (S)VCD creation support (I will look into this, it will possibly need a special tool to be created/found/ported).

And the one most people want:

- DVD burning, via enhancements to cdrtools (most likely)

If you have other future feature suggestions, again, drop me line and I will look into them :-)

Thanks and greetings!
Mark
(leonifan)

P.S. Don't forget to log those Helios bugs at my email address! I especially appreciate idiot-proof reproductions and detailed hardware information - the more detailed, the better (and more likely to get fixed). Thanks again!

Hi all

Just a note to let you know that I am now the primary maintainer of Helios, and I have been working to bring you a nice new version - complete with working CD copying (both image- and 2-disc copying).

I still have some testing and tidying to do, and I have to update the BeOS 5 project and make a build (Zeta is my main development environment), but I wanted to let everyone know that there is still serious work going on with this most essential of apps.

Watch this space...

(Alas, DVD support is not there yet - that will need me to modify cdrtools - which I am planning to do in the future).

Greets and thanks!

Perhaps if dvdrecord appeared to be updated as often as cdrtools, I would agree.

However...

I have some linux patches that work on the latest source of cdrtools, that make cdrecord work with DVDs (it would still build for BeOS...). It's not perfect, but it should work.

If Joerg *really* doesn't want to do this, then I will explore that avenue. But it's only fair to give him a chance to respond first - it is his project, and I would prefer to have him involved. As I say, I am willing to do some of his other more tedious work for him in return - I'm not asking for free.

Either way, I consider DVD recording to be one of the *highest* priorities for BeOS, (why should anyone have to boot to Windows for something as fundamental as that?), and I personally will not easily give up on this.

DVDrecord

There is a version of dvdrecord on BeBits (0.15). I have also successfully buitl 0.1.6 on R5, but I do not wish to post it since dvdrecord is yet another unofficial version of cdrtools (the author would not be pleased, and in any case, it appears to additionally break the GPL...)

I have not yet tested dvdrecord with my drive, since I have no DVD-RW disc (only DVD+RW).

I would still prefer an official cdrecord build for BeOS that supports DVD burning. Aside from the legality (or morality?) of using "corrupted" versions, Helios already uses a mix of tools, and adding yet another one would just be messy.

My experience is :
- DVD-R/RW can be recorded by dvdrecord fork
- DVD+R/RW can be recorded by cdrecord-prodvd

The dvdrecord fork should be rebuild under beos, no ?

1) Yes, this is true - but he also provides free-for-non-profit-use builds of the ProDVD cdrecord for most other platforms on his website. I am only asking for this kind of build, in exchange for my assistance with answering his mountain of support emails.

2) The author *hates* this approach (look on his website and see), and I would like to do this the "official" way. Of course, if he Mr Schilling proves unwilling to help, then I will have no other choice than to attempt to create similiar functionality (it would be better for someone who already has the experience with cd/dvd burning software to do this - if anyone is willing, however, please get in touch!)

Sadly, it is not available (I only found this out two days ago when I got my DVD writer!!)

This is down to cdrecord's lack of DVD support. Even the DVD+ support has been removed from the code (so I cannot compile it in).

I am waiting for a response from Jörg Schilling (the author of cdrtools) about this, and am trying to persuade him to make his (closed source) DVDPro version of cdrecord available on BeOS.

Please see my BeBits feedback on my "cdrtools" page for the email address of Jörg Schilling, and if you wouldn't mind, send him a short email voicing support for cdrtools-ProDVD on BeOS - mention my name (Mark Hogben / "leonifan") if you wish, since I am quite willing to help him out in other ways in return for this app on our OS.

Hope this helps, even though it doesn't solve the DVD problem :-(

General fixes in Alpha3 Helios
 By leonifan - Posted on August 28, 2004 - 13:29:10   (#13999)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.71a3 R5
Hi all

I have updated Helios with some important changes in Alpha 3, some of which will help avoid previous crashing issues.

I would however greatly appreciate bug reports for all remaining stability issues (the virtual silence on Helios bugs, given the large number of downloads, cannot be an accurate reflection of issues ;-)

Testing of the new "general flags" settings field for cdrecord would also be greatly appreciated - there are bound to be teething problems there.

Please send step-by-step reproductions of any bugs to the email address on the Helios download page. Please try to include as much detail as possible, including BeOS version (for example, R5 BeOSMAX3.1b is much better than just R5 - in Zeta's case, I only support the latest release, in this case RC3), Helios version, CD burner make and model, etc.

Thanks

Possible cause of locking crash?
 By leonifan - Posted on August 27, 2004 - 23:41:03   (#13997)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.71a2
For those experiencing a strange crash where Helios locks up the entire machine, I have now been testing exhaustively on this issue, and can find no reproduction of this bug.

However, I *did* notice that if you drop into Helios a symlink that points to a folder *within* the Helios project directory, the "add files" code loops around infinitely i.e. it resolves the symbolic link forever!

Could you check to see if you somehow added a circular symbolic link in your project? (It could in theory be several levels deep - perhaps a link to Helios in another folder?)

I am going to attempt to write some kind of exit condition for this sort of situation, but it would be helpful if we could rule this out (or in?) as a cause of that crashing bug too.

Thanks
Mark

@MYOB:

I cannot currently reproduce this on either of my machines (BeOSMAX3.1b and Zeta RC3).

Please could you provide a step-by-step reproduction at the email address provided below. This would be very helpful to me in diagnosing this issue. If you could send a compressed version of the project (and symlinks, but not the files they point to), this may also be of assistance.

Also, when you say the symlink was missing, did you mean the link in the Helios folder for that project, or the file it referred to (or both)?

As a final note, I should add that old projects should really be thrown away as of this version - I am not certain if the format of the project file changed prior to my receiving the 1.7 source from Maurice, but AFAIK there is currently no provision for converting old projects to new ones (so it may well cause problems in any case).

Nevertheless, this sounds like a nasty bug and I would like to effectively eliminate it. All help appreciated :-)

Thanks
Mark

Naming conventions of Helios packages
 By leonifan - Posted on August 26, 2004 - 20:59:52   (#13982)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.71a2
@edmundf:

If this "file naming" is helpful to people, I will do it. However, both the BeBits version and the executable (About window) show the current version number - the About window now also has a label for Zeta and R5 for extra clarity.

As for the halting bug you mentioned, it is highly unlikely that this new release will fix it since I received no bug report describing the issue (FYI it also does not do this on my R5 or Zeta machines).

Please could *all* bugs be reported to REMOVE_THISleonifan [at] REMOVE_THIS_TOOdsl.pipex.com, preferably together with a step by step repro to avoid ambiguity. I promise that if people *do* send me reports, I will make all effort to fix the problems.

With the best will in the world, I cannot fix bugs about which I am unaware...

Thanks

Are you able to use cdrtools from the command line? Don't worry if not - but if this FAT32 issue still occurs using cdrecord directly, then the issue would lie there and not helios (don't worry - I also build cdrtools for BeOS ;-)

Of course, it still could be the IDE driver even then...

burning problem
 By leonifan - Posted on August 22, 2004 - 15:13:00   (#13942)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.71a1
@hitech:

It is possibly related to the fact it is on a FAT32 partition. I must admit I have not tested burning a file from one (in fact, my R5 machine doesn't even have any version of Windows, since Windows doesn't work properly on it ;-)

I have noticed that even copying files between FAT32 partitions and BFS ones in BeOS tends to freeze periodically for no good reason (I get this with or without the replacement IDE driver) - I expect this to also be the case here.

Could you copy the file over to your BFS partition and test again? (I'd recommend turning Simulation on for the first go, though).

If it turns out to be the FAT32 partition causing this, then I'm afraid it looks like an issue relating to the IDE driver :-( I'll see what I can do about it though.

And thanks for the thorough details and reproduction :-) If only all reports were that explicit...

A problem with Helios
 By hitech - Posted on August 22, 2004 - 14:56:04   (#13941)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.71a1
Attempt to write a disk using Helios 1.71a (NOT 1.71a1) fails.

CD-Burner: LG, I don't remember the exact model, but it's something old, from year 2001; 8 x 4 x 24, I think.

OS: BeOS Pro R5.0.3 with original net_server and media kit (I don't know if it matters).

cdrtools: version 2.01a36 (latest binary).

Description of the error:

After installation of both .PKG files (cdrtools first) I started the Helios and wanted to create a disk. After choosing a 683-MB file located on FAT32 partition for burning and checking that the CD-Burning device is actually my CD-Burner (it was recognized properly), I set up the burning speed to 8x (this is the writing speed of my CD-R), inserted a blank CD-R media and started the burn process. It adjusted the laser power, wrote 1% successfully with "buffer = 32%" and then reported a failure. Looks like buffer underrun; but I don't see a reason for this behaviour - my system never had problems with burning CDs in any other OS I'm using, and at the time of test it was not loaded.

After the failure, the CD contains data about one 683 MB file (that I wanted to burn), but the file is, of course, corrupted.

This behaviour occured 3 times with different files (including one 800-MB), but same results.

What may be the problem? Did I do anything wrong? Shall I write only files from BFS?
