Then this site is not for you. It is for * BeOS *, NOT Windows.
Is it too hard to understand that everyone comes here looking for windows stuff ?

usb_audio driver for Haiku

Haiku's repo has the beginnings of an experimental usb_audio driver also (I don't think it's working yet) - I think it was originally developed for BeOS by Mikael Jansson.

In any case, it's located here for anyone who's interested in hacking on it or messing with it:

USB audio driver info

In order to have what you need, you'll need to have installed BeOS 5 Pro *with* the Option 'Experimental' checked, since this is where the driver you need lives. If that's the case, then the driver you need can be found in

/boot/optional/experimental/drivers/audio/ua100/

just run the install script in that folder to install both drivers in their proper locations. If you didn't install BeOS 5 Pro with the Experimental package, or are using PE, the whole package (or the specific driver, 'usb_speaker') is pretty easy to find on BeShare. Lemme know if you need anymore help.

littlefae - considered USB sound?

Hi littlefae, have you considered using USB sound? I have a Dell Latitude CPi D300XT [well, it's actually a D400XT, but there's no such thing in Dell's official lineup ;) ] and have had various problems with ACPI and the CS4237b sound chipset.

I decided to experiment with USB audio. I can say for a fact that the inexpensive Xitel MD-Port AN1 works great with the 'experimental' USB audio driver. Supposedly the pro-level Roland UA-100 is also an option, but those are 10 times the price of the Xitel, which you can pick one up for $10-20 on eBay, maybe less. I had problems with volume control on mine, and the output was low enough that I needed to use sensitive headphones or external powered speakers. Anyway, it's a workaround, and the sound quality is really good, even with the low output problem I mentioned.

Libretto 100ct and NeoMagic driver

Hi!

Great work on this driver! I used it on my old IBM Thinkpad and enjoyed it greatly.
Now I've got a very tiny Toshiba Libretto 100ct — works great except the graphics chip, which is a Neomagic 2160. I've tried installing this driver, and on rebooting the system (5.1d) doesn't recognize the chip…
Unfortunately, as well, the Toshiba BIOS has no provision where I can tell the system to "assign an IRQ to the video card."
(I wonder if it doesn't have to do with modes -- the Libretto does 800x400 on its oddly shaped screen.)
Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Regards,
Jonathan Dueck

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have a Dell Latitude CPt 333GT, which HAS this annoying chipset, and yet no sound... I can't give the thing away, as doing so means I am breaking the law, since it hasn't gone through a formal wipedown (Involves grinding down the RAM, and sending the drives to the melters.).. But I also want this driver to do it all. :S

Hi,

Maybe ask Cian Duffy for his code or his help. AFAIK he did preliminary work (at the least) for such a driver. Would be nice if someone could finalize/extend that if possible ;-)

Hi,

Well, These kind of things could be an option indeed.
Something like 50 bucks I could actually spend on it ;-)

I guess the trouble is actually sending a laptop then, as that costs a lot probably. At least, I wouldn't know how to arrange this in a way it would be delivered on one whole piece, for a reasonable price...

Anyway, I am still on the lookout. If I encounter a laptop with Neomagic chipset that I can get my hands on, even if temporary, I'll have a look at how the driver performs on it always. There are some *known issues* as well that I'd still like to solve.. :-)

Rudolf.

Tvout

Hi,

The current Neomagic driver does not support TVout. While it should be possible to add support for this feature, I cannot do it as I don't have access to a laptop with TVout feature built-in.

As far as I know a seperate encoder is used, likely the Chrontel CH7006 or so. It's the kind of chip that is supported by BeTVOut, the 'hack' solution that I once wrote for nVidia cards.

Because the encoder is connected to an I2C bus that sits in the Neomagic chip, it won't work with BeTVOut as that searches for a nVidia graphicschip with it's specifics. (The Neomagic specifics for that bus are unknown to me still)

So, in short: no, no TVout support here. You can't use it, and chances are this will stay this way as well (as Neomagic cards are nolonger much in use these days I'm afraid, so chances are very low I will get my hands on one.)

Sorry the news couldn't be better...

Bye!

Rudolf.

Hi,
I'm trying a MagicGraph 128XD (NM2160) on an old laptop (Acer 711TE) it works ok.
This laptop has a TV-out connector (s-video). According to the manual you can activate the tv-out using the driver (on Win98).
With your wonderfull (and fast) driver I can't seen any output. Is there any way I can activate the output?
Is it done by the video chip or should I locate a new chip near the video-out connector?

Thanks!!

Thanks for posting the card ID.

You have a MagicMedia 256AV (NM2200).
BTW: The ID's in the driver are these:

1: MagicGraph 128 (NM2070)
2: MagicGraph 128V (NM2090)
3: MagicGraph 128ZV (NM2093)
83: MagicGraph 128ZV+ (NM2097)
4: MagicGraph 128XD (NM2160)
5: MagicMedia 256AV (NM2200)
25: MagicMedia 256AV+ (NM2230)
6: MagicMedia 256ZX (NM2360)
16: MagicMedia 256XL+ (NM2380)

If anyone has a Neomagic card that doesn't work, the ID should be checked to be one of these. If not, let me know!

Also: anyone using this driver is encouraged to let me know how it holds up, and at the same time give me the card ID from the Devices prefs app.

Thanks :)

Rudolf.

I think one way is to BeOS live and future- re-buying OS sources from Palm,Inc. All other ways- Zeta, Haiku, OpenBeOS, BlueEyed.. etc.etc.etc... is just time wasting.
All founds (money) must be used for recompleting ex-Be employees (without any "focus-shift") and for continue BeOS developing to 6.0, 7.0 versions...

What you think JLG? :)

Hi,

I'm glad the driver performs so well on your Sony Vaio laptop using overlay. This driver made it possible for me as well to playback MPEG1 and even DivX (using the 3ivX codec) on my Celeron 400Mhz laptop.

Anyway: I'd appreciate it if you could post the cardID of the card you have in your laptop. You can find this info in the 'Devices' preferences app. Find the VGA device, and select the 'info' tab. The cardID will be shown then.

I can use this info to verify all cards are indeed working as expected a bit more: feedback has been low on this driver in the past. I guess high-time for Neomagic is a bit over there days. Still it's nice to have BeOS running on those however I think, as it performs just nicely.

Bye!

Rudolf.

Hi!

Thank you for those kind words (Rudolf takes a bow and blushes somewhat). I'm glad you all enjoy the results of my work. That was the point of it. :-)

Anyway: if anyone wishes to show gratitude by putting in some $$$ I guess maybe the best way to do that is by giving a donation to Haiku. I think you can find info about the subject on the Haiku website.

Best regards, and keep on using BeOS (any version ;-)

Rudolf.

This driver is great!
Now I can enjoy mpeg1-videos in fullscreen-mode on my Sony Vaio N505X (333MHz, 96MB RAM) and Pulse shows less than 50% CPU-Load!

Thanks!!!

Thank you Rudolph for developing drivers for BeOS. I think drivers (not only for graphic cards) is main place for OS popularity.

I want to help you in this *hard* work. Where I can get information, code samples about developing drivers for BeOS? Can you help me

All BeOS community must help to you.

P.S. Where I can send bonus ($$$) for you?

I've got a few NM256 carded laptops around, but the only NM256 one with decent speed has... Yamaha sound.

The NM256 audio processor is on the graphics chip, and beyond a 64K buffer, uses the video RAM for its buffering, and can actually cause video corruption when in heavy use, as my Dell Latitude does under Linux. The card uses very non-standard ways to do stuff, requiring a fairly complex driver. The only good thing about it is that it uses the AC97 codec, which is well implemented on BeOS already. So, theorethically, all thats needed are driver hooks to the codec, but its a lot harder than that.

Sound........

Now all that is missing is somebody making a basic driver to get at least sound output out of these chipsets ;)
My laptop keeps quiet about it!

Thanks Rudolf!
