After I installed the libcl from the other MSN :-)
It opens but my password is wrong, however I am sure
I used the right password.
Is it this MSN or is the MSN server which is wrong?

source?

There doesn't seem to be anything new for three, is there any chance of releasing the source code of Msn++?

I'm just interested in hacking in a couple of small features. I don't care if the code isn't pretty, given my programming skills it definitely won't be pretty after I'm done with it....

Thanks in advance.

CPU Spikes

I'm not sure why but now if I open a window to any one my CPU spikes & stays there. Once my CPU has spiked closing the chat window doesn't help & I have to kill MSN++ to return the machine to normal.

Weird theory

I've have this client run great since day one, but now since Microsoft has forced that client upgrade I have this racing CPU & occasionally memory issue too. I have to kill & restart every 10 min or so. Might be "co-inkydink" but the timing of MSN++ going a tad whacky & the forced client upgrades are a tad uncanny.

I've also had that bug since first version, the last time was this morning. If you close the chat window, the loop ends.

Just saw the processer sit at 100% for a while and had a boo with ProcessController--Msn++ was gobbling up memory at about 50k/sec IIRC (it was already up to 25MB). One chat window open, nothing too exciting going on (BRB, no activity). Not sure what caused it.

Msn++ is indeed compiled for net_server. I dont have bone, and I just downloaded Zeta, if I get my network going in Zeta Ill try a compile for Zeta too.

I think cryptlib also needs a different version for BONE, although I could be wrong.

Sign in problems

The problem in Zeta could be caused by the fact that Msn++ is compiled for net_server, at least I assume it is. We had the exact same problem with Bme, therefore we made separate net_server and BONE versions. The BONE version only differs in that it is linked to libbnetapi.so instead of libnetapi.so.

hope that helps,

Tim

Zeta (all versions) bmsn, bme and imkit - login works, Msn++ login fails.

BeOS Pro (net_server) Msn++ works flawlessly.

Hi,

Thanks simon, for the information about statical linking. Ive uploaded a statically linked version, so there will be no problems with libraries anymore.

bbjimmy, since it happens with every MSNmessenger, I think its a BeOS or Msn problem. I need more information to really know what the problem might be. What kind of error do you get and things like that.

Greetings

Hi,

Good to see some competition, might even make me do some work on Bme (for those complaining about lack of updates, uni has been very busy lately, now xmas vac :))

As for linking to a static library, you will have to build a static cryptlib (just "make" instead of "make shared"), that will produce a library clib.3.1.a or something - add that to your project and it will be statically linked.

Missing library

I added the link to the library I used.
It was my intention however to statically link the library. So that there will be no hassle with libraries. I added the library to my project, but that doesnt seem to statically link it. If somebody could help me out here, and tell me how to do that, i would appreciate it very much :)

Hi Jess,
First of all, thanks for the input.
Im happy that you find msn++ clean and stable, because these 2 where the main goals when writing it.

File transfer is on the todo-list. I miss this feature too, so you can be shure it will be added. Saving the window-coordinates is something I was thinking about. It would indeed be great to have chats with the same person always at the same location. About the "typing thing", msn++ is receiving it, but not sending it. So other people dont see (yet) that you are typing a message. When it is implemented there will be an option to disable it.

I agree that there is need for something to alert you about new messages. Sometimes a few minutes go by, not realising I have new messages. But Im still thinking about how to do it. I think there is now way to blink the application button in de deskbar to gain attention, like with FlashWindow() in windows.
I'll need to give it more thought before I start implementing it. Your suggestion is appreciated very much.

Greetings
SubHero

Ok now

Dang man, now if you save the windows position & add file transfer this will have serious meat & potatoes. This little sucker is clean to the point & hasn't crashed or done something wierd once. I like the icon change for typing too. The typing thing was why I started using MSN (gasp) like 6 years ago. Cuz I got sick of wondering "Are they gonna answer or have they gone to walk their dog?".

I have disscussed many other things in the past with the other projects like storing window position of each person. So you will always have a certain persons window open in a certain screen co-ordinate, that way you can organize a bunch of windows & they will always adhear to your organizing. That & sound on every action. Never fails I have people message me in Be but that window becomes the focused window so it never makes a sound & I'll be working on another machine completely unaware some one has messaged me. Would be cool to have a unique sound for a new window, then a loud sound for an unfocused window with a new message & a softer sound for a focused window with a new message for people like me with 8 systems infront of them so they don't have to click on something else all the time to defocus the MSN window to know when they have a message audibly. BeShare has options for these variing sound on priv chat windows so if you do want to add stuff like this you could snoop through Jeremy's code to get an idea as to how it's done. That or stare at Loon till he cracks & yells "WHAT! WHAT DO YOU WANT!?"

Thanks again man!

Hey dude, want help doing data storage?

Easy, use BMessage, look at Flatten() and Unflatten()

Then you can just make a BMessage, add what you wan to it from the controls and save it(flatten), or create a message from a file(unflatten) and use msg./*->*/FindString("login", login_name);

Need help, e-mail me and I can get back to you in a day or two.

I don't see anything wrong with many similar apps. Besides how do we know if all these authors work well together in the first place. How much free time each one has, how often do they get-online to converse and share ideas? or hom much time they code??

Anyway, its nice to see more and more apps being coded for beos. Doesn't matter if there are 4 MSN apps. They are not 100% identical :-)

We should not complain. We should be glad to see some "competition" in the software-area. Too long have we complained about to few software possibillities.

But, COOPERATION is not something i dislike. I believe that in this case it would be great since we don't see updates very often..

Good luck, I'm looking forward to use this client if it goes along my taste. Sounds like it!

Nice to see

Bme

Msn++ is NOT based on BMe. Actually, i wrote an msnclient before BeMsn and Bme came out. I was new to programming in BeOS and an msnclient was something I really missed. So I thought it would be nice to learn programming in BeOS by doing something constructive. Then BeMSN came out and I thought my client had nothing to offer more than BeMSN. Also the msn protocol changed, and started using SSL, and I had no idea how to use SSL in my programs. I used BeMSN for some time, but it crashed too often, i found the GUI darn ugly, and lacked good contactlist organization I always wanted in a MSN client. So about a month ago, I decided to rewrite Msn++ because there may be other people who dont like BeMSN that much. Cryptlib seemed to handle the SSL stuff in BeMSN so I found out how to use it in my program. Ive been using my program for some time now and i can say its pretty usable and never experienced a crash in the later builds. I plan to work on it on a regular basis, and improve it, if there are suggestions . One thing that will be added in the future, is saving your preferences and login information. But i have to read the storage part of the bebook to find out how to work with files and directories. Group management and filetransfer are on the list too. Suggestions and feedback are appreciated. Msn++ is meant to be, and stay, easy and clean. So dont expect emoticon-hell or things like that. If I stop working on Msn++, or have too litlle time for it, or if I think the program is pretty final, code will be made available. Thanks for the reactions so far. Input from the users is what keeps the developers going. Thanks!

ah the question

I asked a question like this quite some time ago. The question at the time however was where does BME stand since the IM Kit does what BME does. However the question "Why not help with BME?" might be answered in the fact the BME team has been hiding for the most part & when I tossed out a build of the CVS BME, we saw at least one person that had not even heard of the project. So how can you help with something you don't know exists? This could have been the reason, even the IM Kit project has a low profile so any one not glued to bebits or beshare might not have a clue these projects even exist.

I don't think this is based on BME at all. I wondered that when I saw the screens but when I downloaded this & tried it I saw this has features both BeMSN and BME are lacking in the sorting grouping and show by options.

I'm now after a few days of use finding a test version of BeMSN to crash like mad if some one messages me (it was fine the first whlie :/), something about when some one else opens the conversation window, it spikes the CPU & locks up dead. I found the CVS of BME nice but the lack of sorting sucked cuz sorting by groups is crap, you can have a list of 300 people & have to hunt to see who is online. I'm not sure why any one would want to sort by group since I've never seen any app that sorts via a "Group" such as all these people belong to the Chess group (Group Chess |>), and these belong to the Cheese group (Group Cheese |>). Every app I have seen just says "They are in a group" or they are not (individuals), so you have no co-hearant way of sorting any one in groups anyhow.

When it gets down to it we have 4 MSN apps, all with differant features, none complete. The question could still be posed why does the BME team not take over the MSN section to the IM Kit or build a slick UI top end to the IM Kit in general instead of creating a seperate project. However we have 4 MSN clients atm (BME, BeMSN, IMKit, Msn++) untill the last release of BeMSN is tossed out as a last build since it was more or less merged with the BME project. Then we have 3, still redundant and a possibly wastefull when we could have every one go nuts on a single project & hammer it out much faster and be very feature rich if the project is co-ordinated well.

Bme?

From screenshots, that appears to be based off Bme - its virtually the same. Why make a new programme? Why not just help with Bme. Duplication is very, very un-BeOS-like

Uh, I'm glad to see the MSN apps creeping up, this looks really nice and has to cool options for sorting.
