Archiver doesn't, but if I was a paranoic guy, I prefer an hard encryption tool instead a bland password protection.

I'm still using the good old Expander, but I admire your work, too cool

Yes I'm aware of the app Archiver, and I've also tried it some time ago. But back then I couldn't get it to work right. Can't remember why...

The reason why Beezer tracker add-on might be developed is to let users make archives similar to Zip-o-Matic but in any format (which Archiver apparently does I think) + the features of Beezer such as password support perhaps, also the options of working with the created archive (such as removing .o files etc).

Don't know, but i've got a few mails asking me for one :) And as you would know, its not on the top of my TODO list.

Can i suggest you to try Archiver (http://www.bebits.com/app/3046)?
It's a good tracker add-on and a pretty working replacement for Zip-O-Matic

Yes, I've been thinking of this right from the beginning, currently i've been ironing out some rare bugs and working to include some things..

I've still not explored the possibilities of the tracker add-on code wise, but I think i should be able to pull it off.

I love Beezer

It does almost everything that Squeezer does, and even does some things Squeezer doesn't do (like the information panel at the bottom of the window). I hope you eventually develop a Tracker add-on for Beezer so it can be used to create archives just by selecting the files you want included in a Tracker view, then select the Beezer add-on, and you are finished!

Anyway, the next release of beezer is about to be released which has tons of bug fixes and some new things as well... eventually the people that genuinely vote will prevail :)

Those voting with 1 (one!) _must_ be either pissed of with the author of this app, or they are just crazy.

Come on! A one?!

Nevermind those Ram... your app deserves the 10 I gave to it.

Thanks :)

At the first release of Beezer i thought I would note even make a rar add-on because I thought rar was a very rare format and that in BeOS it wasn't widely used.

But it seems the other way around. I've got TONS of feedback regarding rar support and I fully intend to keep supporting rar as much as possible.

First off I voted, I would have selected 20 but 10 was the best rating the site will allow. As for feedback, beezer kicks @#$%ing @%&!!!

This is a really great app to say the least, I'm really glad you're putting time into the Rar stuff cuz Rar is my format of choice so it just makes this already bad @#$ app even better. Thanks for your work!

Since a lot of people contacted me regarding rar add-on for Beezer, i've improved it to use unrar 3.10 for BeOS and rar 2.70 for BeOS.

This means rar add-on will be able to extract 3.x rar archives while creation/adding is restricted to 2.x rar format.

And the next version, 0.03 also has some other stuff added/fixed etc.

I've currently released it for private testing and will be releasing it publicly in a few days time, probably in the weekend...

The feedback for Beezer both from here and through e-mail has been good. Please continue to provide me with feedback so you keep me interested in improving it :)

Ram.

Nicely done, it pays to take some time before releasing software! About the only thing I noticed was a broken link to the documentation, which was pointing to an absolute location. I like the clean GUI and how many useful options are there without getting in the way. Though I will most likely stick to Zip-O-Matic and Expander for most archiving needs (just because they require less clicks), it is defenitely good to have more powerful tools arround, especially for extracing only certain files from a larger archive.

Thanks for the hard work you have put into this!

Problematic Rars
 By Ram - Posted on January 27, 2005 - 12:23:55   (#15585)
Current version when comment was posted: 0.02
After a few reports I've come to know that some rar files (due to being created with new rar versions in other platform perhaps) are NOT being able to "unrar" using BeOS' unrar utility.

I tried a lot of unrar utilities and none of them work with some newer rar files.

This is not a problem with Beezer ... Until the latest unrar/rar is ported to BeOS you might have problems unrar'ing a rar file.

1. Make sure u have the recommended "rar" binary - u must download it from here http://bebits.com/app/451 if u don't already have it.

2. Make sure there are no broken links in the "workers" folder.

3. The mime-type for rar files are "application/x-rar-compressed", make sure your rar archive is of this mime-type while opening through Beezer.

If the problem still persist, contact me by e-mail.

Hi,
The package looks very profesional unzipping work fine, but
I was able to inzip things in BeOS already.
A rar file gives :" this file is not an archive or an unsupported one"
What is it I am doing wrong?

Cool :)

Thanks for your work with the rar add-on. And in my case particularly, it's about unpacking pw protected rar files, not creating them, so it's cool ;)

Well, in this limited period of time, I've managed to bring together a rar add-on with password support.

Rar add-on doesn't use the password while adding files yet. If forgot to include this ;) In the next release maybe.

So far I haven't made any provisions for passwords. Passwords would require massive changes in a lot of places in the code.

The rar add-on I'm going to release with 0.02 will simply work only for rar files without passwords.

Making password supported rar requires more time and right now I spend most of my time in college.

Password protected rar support seems more possible than password protected zip though.

Hey Ram,

Will the rar add-on accept password protected rar files? When you go to unpack you need to input the pw.

You cannot unrar a rar file because I'm having the rar add-on for Beezer still ONLY in my harddisk ;-P

The next release will come with a rar add-on that supports all rar functions (except delete - the reasons I'll give later).

It will crawl with 7000, yes. But you can't see all 7000 on a single screen can you - that's why there's a scrollbar. In fact, only 20 or so are actually *visible* as in need to be drawn by the app server in a screen update. These are the only ones that need urgent resizing.

It may be that it is very hard to change this behaviour, depending how the column list view is implemented, but it was just something I thought that could be made repsonsive no matter how many files are in the archive.

Extremely good work

First of all I've not seen a single archiver app that opens a "blank" archive without asking you a name because all archiver programs are not capable of creating empty archives. Infact some of them delete the archive itself when you delete all the files in them.

Secondly, clicking the "Create" button DOES ask you for a name and type of the archive.

So ....

What I'd like is that the app opens with a new, empty archive, but without asking me the name of the archive (which, IIRC, happens when I hit the "create" button).

BTW, why do you say the welcome window has to be shown anyway ?

P.S: If just clicking on the "create" button does this already, just ignore me :P

Jack Burton - the option you wanted "On Startup:" either Open or Create or Show welcome window.

This can be done, but it will still result in the Welcome window being shown and will actually work like an automatic "click" of the Open or create button on the Welcome window - and may 'look' a bit flickerly i.e. Welcome window shows for a second and immediately an Open/Create filepanel.

If this is okay to you, please respond in this feedback form or mail me.

Thanks :^)

By the way i'm all set to release 0.002 :) Has many things you guys wanted.

tb100 i know exactly what you mean and I'm telling the same thing. Only those physically visible items are resized .... Try again.

Open 7000 files, resize - it will crawl - collapse them into about 20 odd folders then resize will be fast. It works the way you want it to. You should try it again on the file i mentioned - BeBookmarks.zip.

I think we still have a different definition of visible entries.

You mean any entries that are expanded. I mean just the entries actually in the part of the list currently visible with the current scrollbar position. To take your example, if you have a zip file with 7000 files, all expanded, there are still only 20 or so that actually fit on the screen at once - they're the only items that urgently need resizing.

Great, but...

This app is what I always wanted, as Expander is a bit limited (all or nothing, you can't extract only some files out of an archive).

Though, I think that there should be the chance to just open the app to do whatever you wish (like you can do with winzip) instead to be forced to choose at startup if you want to create a new archive or to open an existing one. That sounds like the winzip wizard mode that I simply HATE :P

The rest looks great, though :)
Thanks for the nice work.

Onlg gzip and bzip2 files need to unpacked into .tars before displaying them. Not for any other archive format.

And Yes, resizing columns take into account ONLY visible items. Try this on a file like BeBookmarks.zip with 7000 files. Once u "collapse all" folders you would notice a signficant improvement in speed when resizing the columns.

Oh, does it actually unpack the whole file when displaying the list? I suppose it would have to to get the icons right. Yeh, it was a gzip file too, that might have had something to do with it.

By visible files I meant just the 20 or so that are actually on the screen - do the others as and when they get scrolled into view.

Regarding large files, yes it does take a while.

But that's mainly for tar.gzip and tar.bzip2. This is because Beezer needs to unpack them and gzip/bzip2 takes a hell of a lot of time to unpack when compared to zip. Try opening a zip file with so many files and it should be MUCH MUCH faster.

Secondly, regarding the columns calculating its width, the resizing DOES become faster when you collapse the folders and reduce the number of visible items. I've tried it with dozens of large files. I'm not sure of what you talked about regarding calculating width for only visible items, its already that way.

And for VERY large files, once you open them, choose "Settings->When Opening->Show all items folded" and then "Settings->Save to archive" so that the next time you load it, its much faster.

Awesome

Wow! Thanks for this app, it's great.

It does struggle a little with large archives though - I tried opening mozilla-source.tar.gz, and it crawled along (OK, so there are 40000 files in there!) Things such as resizing columns seem to be calculated for all items in the list, it might speed things up with large archives if only the ones visible actually have anything done to them, and the others are marked as needing updating the next time they come into view.

Still, it's a great app in general, seems stable and is nicely designed. Thanks a lot!

Simon

I've already begun coding the next version and will probably release it in the next few weeks (if all things so smoothly)...

Some of the things it will have are: Rar add-on, "del" key associated with delete, among others.

So far the Rar add-on can create, open, extract rar files. The delete option is the one i'm finding very tricky. I might end-up doing lots of code changes to the base application if rar's delete demands it. Password support in rar won't be available in the next release though. That involves lots more work.
