Hi Stephan.
If you got keymap file in readable form, you will see there table with "raw" codes in first column,
and then set of columns witch chars(actually byte seqences in utf-8) to be produced under various modifier conditions - see headers for those columns.
So, look in first portion of that file, where keyboard schematics is present. Find there "raw"-codes for numpad keys, then find those in first column.
You will see, that for "normal state" those have assigned (in hex) something like 0x01, 0x02 etc.
Replace those values with '1', '2' etc.
Then make keymap binary.
Unfortunately this workaround don't work for Terminal - abother BeOS issue. So in Teminal you still should press NumLock once.

SD,
could you please explain how to do the workarround using the keymap? I could figure out how to use the keymap command to get a human readable keymap, and there is a section about keyboard locks. I have "LockSettings = NumLock". But all I get is the light on my keyboard, but no actually working NumLock setting. After booting, I have to press NumLock twice, first it turns off the light, second it turns it on for real. I'm using a German keyboard.
What amazes me is that every year or so, along comes a programmer to publish another "NumLock fix", appearantly aware that there are previous attempts. Yet they fail to actually check their software to be really working and still publish another non-working BeBits entry. Maybe it has to do with the bug showing differently on different keyboards. Maybe it really works on some keyboards... but obviously the previous attempts did not work for them, so they saw the need to publish yet another fix. So I wonder if every BeBits NumLock fix is broken in some individual way... :-)
Regards,
-Stephan

Previous poster is absolutely correct.
This is well-known bug of R5 input_server.
I posted comment about R5 issue in that Japanese program
talckback aswell. So wondering why Daniel spent his time at all for R5 version.
Only workaround for that bug for R5 is editing your keymap file, in order to have numbers assigned to numpad keys for default. As i did with number of my keymaps published at bebits.

I believe that the inability of getting this to work in R5 is a limitation of the input_server on R5. I think all that you can manage to have happen is the LED for Num Lock turn on, without Num Lock actually being activated.
I think there were several attempts in the past to get this to work, but in the end it came down to a bug/limitation in R5's input_server.
Right now I'm using this with Haiku's input_server, and it is functioning as expected with Keyboard Locks, as well as NumLocker.
Perhaps there is some way to get this working properly on R5 with the original input_server, but I'm not so sure.

Are you modifying the installation drive during install?
Please check if you have that folder on your system (you should...)

This sounds like a great little application. I really hope that you're able to sort out the bugs in the R5 version! I would love to be able to use it.

I've done some testing, as soon as you hit any key with BeOS 5, the light turns off.
I've removed the BeOS 5 version and will check.

You have lights on your F-keys? Cool...
Okay, what it did the first two times is turn the lock on about three seconds before I could see the time appear on the Deskbar. Then ~27 seconds later the light would go out again.
Now, the light's coming on much earlier, and just staying on, but even right away (i.e., within 27 seconds), I can tell it's not really on--if I press one of the number keys, it turns off (and a number keystroke doesn't go through), and if I press num lock once, it stays on, and then after that functions normally.
I've got an MS Internet keyboard, PS/2, if that makes a difference...
