I'm not surprised that it didn't work very well. It took a while before I was able to get issues with special characters nailed down. The problem is that CDDB lookups can be either ASCII, Latin-1, or full-blown UTF. Detecting it is a pain. Anyway, the next release candidate appears to properly handle special characters (as far as I can tell, at least) and also has a couple minor problems with cursor keys not working correctly also being fixed. There are still some things to add some more polish to SimplyVorbis, so it might be a little while before it's released. If it's preventing you from ripping the CD at all, e-mail me privately and I'll see what I can do.

I lost my music collection over the holidays so I've been re-ripping my CDs and this has made it very easy. :) I just came across one it didn't like so much though - 'Chill with Satie' has a lot of tracks with accented characters that end up with little squares beside them in the track titles, and sometimes I can't even delete them properly (the cursor ends up to the right of where I'm typing, etc.) Do titles not come in from the CDDB in UTF or something?
Anyway, thanks, this is super cool.

At the moment, you can't submit to freedb, but at least once you enter stuff in, you won't have to do it a second time. I have yet to have a CD which wasn't in the database - which CD didn't show up?

DarkWyrm, I said you hate me by the time this is through.
I've ripped two CDs where the last track was not ripped. The job completes, the CD ejects, but the final track does not get ripped. Again, I'll experiment some more with it, once I'm back in BeOS land, but this is a regular quirk. Well, twice...
If you need me to give more info, I can. Just let me know what you could need to know

Well, it sounds like I have some work to do on the MIME stuff. No matter. I've scheduled fixing that for the next release. I'm also thankful you pointed out the 'Choose Notify Sound' bug. That is merely a typo in the code which set the title to the wrong file chooser. Even though RC1's chooser says 'Choose Notify Sound', if you select a folder, it will set the music folder to whatever you have chosen. A graphical error only, but definitely a confusing one.

OK, here's what I did.
Removed the filetypes entry for ogg and restarted SimplyVorbis. Still no attributes. Reinstalled SimplyVorbis and tried again. Still no joy. Installed Vorbis Tools (http://www.bebits.com/app/1058) and still no joy. Installed OGG Vorbis MIME (http://www.bebits.com/app/1232) success. SimplyVorbis is now writing attributes to ogg files. Nice.
Next bug (you're going to hate me by the time I'm through...), the select music folder doesn't appear to work. I click on it it and it starts expecting me to choose a sound file to associate with job completion. Also, the preferences window is too small and cuts off the lower part of what it is trying to disply. Which, from what I can fathom, pertains to choosing sounds to denote job completion.
However, I can now enjoy attributes with my music. Does SimplyVorbis also write information to tags? Even if BeOS doesn't use the tags for much, they do have a use outside of BeOS (perish the thought...)

There's one really easy way to fix the MIME problem - go into the FileTypes Preferences app, remove the Ogg Vorbis entry under Audio, close FileTypes and start SimplyVorbis. The app already installs the MIME type for Ogg Vorbis files, but the code for detecting this is relatively simplistic - SV checks to see if it's installed and if the MIME isn't (audio/x-vorbis), it installs the MIME, including all the miscellaneous attributes. The reason why this happens is some apps install the MIME and don't do squat with the attributes. I'll see if there's a better way to detect the MIME type for RC2.
The bitrate/quality rating is something that some people are very picky about. There are also quite a few people who just want it to sound good. As a result, I try to just pick a good balance between file size and quality. While I can crank up the quality for Ogg Vorbis very easily (and will, btw), I don't know enought about the Media Kit to be able to determine whether or not I *can* change the bitrate, and if so, how. One more reason to go Vorbis, I guess. :)
If any of you would like to tweak the sources to increase the Ogg Vorbis quality so that you don't have to wait for RC2, let me know and I'll post it here.

It do write attributes when encoding a vorbisfile, but it could be that your vorbismime does not have the extra attributes added. Check and compare with MP3mime.
DarkWyrm, perhaps SimplyVorbis should check and add those attributes automatically.
PS. Thank you for all of your work.

Well, I've tried two CDs, different artists. One I ripped to vorbis, and no attributes showed up. The other I ripped to MP3 and the attributes did show up.
When I'm back in BeOS land I'll try ripping a few more CDs to vorbis and see what happens.
One other thing, is the default bitrate 128Kbps? If it is, it's probably too low. Speaking as someone who works in the business of digital music, people are incredibly fussy about this. As hardware is cheap and storage is much much larger than what it was in the R5 heyday, I'd urge you to condier making it higher by default. I like your quest for simplicity and not bamboozling the user, so it could be something as simple as "low" (192Kbps VBR, and or equivalent in Vorbis) and "high" (320Kbps VBR, and or equivalent in Vorbis.) Those two settings seem to be defaults for most digital music suppliers in the industry, so they seem like good enough standards to follow. Of course, it's your app and far be it from me to tell you waht to do.
Great app, I really like it. Will it be part of the Haiku project?

Well, I did some playing around with the layout code for both the main window and the preferences window and it works much better - even with 16 and 18 point font sizes.
Anyway, ModeenF, the BNetAddress problem took a little playing around, but as it turns out, some of the CDDB code that I didn't write (originally taken from the CDButton sample app) was the problem. A global function which was used to throw exceptions wasn't working right. I removed the exception code and replaced it with some simple status_t return codes for the functions that use the throw() and everything seemed to work right. If SimplyVorbis is run when an Internet connection isn't present, it waits about a minute for the lookup and then shows filler info ("Untitled Artist", "Untitled Album", "Track 01", etc.) The timeout is a little long, but everything is at least handled gracefully.

Just curious, have you thought of just simply making use of the Track attribute and just using the track's name? I have no problem in adding a couple more naming schemes (but *just* a couple more), but I was just wondering if this would fit your needs already instead of having to wait for the next release.
BTW, choosing 'Group by Artist and Album' in the Preferences will store files in the way you have requested. :)

'Glad you spoke up - these are all very good suggestions and thoughts. The next release will reflect what you have suggested.
So far, the bitrate attribute hasn't been written because I wasn't sure the best route to proceed because the bitrate is variable (although it *is* an averaged bitrate). I generally associate a bitrate with a constant bitrate file, mp3 or otherwise. I can add this if it's not confusing.
When it appears that SimplyVorbis is 'idle', it is, in fact, always watching the CD drive, so what you have described is quite normal. This continual - however minor - activity is what allows SimplyVorbis to recognize when a CD has been changed or ejected. In short, it's not a bug - it's a feature. :)

Link the SimplyVorbis BeApp to the desktop from the software valet installation. Create a Simply vorbis folder in the BeMenu with links to the ReadMe and SimplyVorbis BeApp.
Keyboard shortcut for preferences windows. Preferable alt+p.
The 'Show Music Folder' (alt+l) does not bring up the boot/home/music foler (when it is not there), or it should display a message when the folder does not exist, or ask to create the folder for you.
Bitrate issues - what bitrate is the CD audio converted too - this is not clear anywhere in the program, or in the readme either.
I had to find out with VLC what bitrate SimplyVorbis was encoding at - 128, but the transperancy of Vorbis occurs at 160Kb/s or -q5 . This seems puzzling for me, since the transperancy value was not chosen by default.
Useability - No predefined shortcut of naming Tracks. Say that if I rename Track 01 to something, then I have to move my mouse to Track 02 and then edit it. There should be an alt+downarrow keyboard shortcut to make this more pain-free (and also and alt+uparrow to fix mistakes)
It also seemed alien to me that I would have to have the track highlighted or selected to 'Rip' tracks, as it could be interpreted as this is the selection you wish to edit (as with most other applications on BeOS)
Hopefull you find these improvement suggestions concise, and usefull, and you implement them into the next version.

Thankfully, that's one I can at least sort-of answer - I'm in a similar situation. When SimplyVorbis recognizes that you have put in a new CD while it's running, it first queries all BeOS volumes for a file containing the data for the CD. If it doesn't find one, then it asks FreeDB.
Just so all of you reading this forum are aware, I am going to be doing some more testing of the CDDB code and adding some more error handling and such. I'm also going to test the app more under conditions where the CD's info can't be found.

@Riplee
1) When you start the app, are you connected to the Internet?
2) What version of BeOS are you using? Max? R5 Pro? Zeta? Something else?
3) Are you using the patched Beta 2 or the initial release? In working on the CD lookup stuff, I accidentally broke the lookup code, so I uploaded a patched package some time ago so that people could actually use the thing. :D
@Kraton
The format box is disabled when you have only one choice, such as in Zeta without the Ogg Vorbis encoder installed -- your only choice is MP3, for example. Anyway, there is an apparent bug in the code that checks for the existence of an Ogg Vorbis encoder or an MP3 encoder and it's *supposed* to tell you when this happens. Beta 3 will have this fix.
Max Edition does not come with an Ogg Vorbis or MP3 encoder. When installing on Max Edition (which is what I develop SimplyVorbis on), you need to choose the Standard Installation in order to have at least the Ogg Vorbis installed.
@ModeenF
'Glad you like it. :) I'm still working on fixing lookups on CDs which have characters in them like what you have described. The original CDDB lookup code was ASCII-only and I don't have any CDs with such characters, so work on this will probably take a while, but I am working at it.

Here on my Zeta 1.0 System it is working, as I told you I had only one crash the first time I tried SV, that time I run SV, mounted the CD-Drive and then imediately clicked on go. Then nothing happend...
Now I dont mount the CD-Drive. I only have to insert a Music-CD and then run SV. Sometimes nothing happens so I close SV and restart it, after restart all the Music-CD Files show up and are ready to copy.
On my Beos R5 Max Version the app wont even start...
Same System only other partition. I will try to start it again and sent the bug report to DarkWyrm. Sure he will find the problem.

I just reinstalled Zeta and call me crazy if you like, but it seems to be *more* stable for me, not less. For some bizarre reason, I am occasionally getting complete system freezes while ripping. It very well may be R5's SCSI driver not being completely happy with my CD drive. I'll keep working on it. BTW, don't be too surprised if you see another beta release later this week. I know some of you guys have mentioned crashes and such on startup. I've run into a few issues here and there running Max Edition 3.1., but none of them were crashes. As time has progressed I've come to the theory that some of us are running on hardware that doesn't completely play nice-nice with the drivers on Zeta and/or R5. While stress-testing last night (ripping two discs simultaneously) my machine just completely hung. I have a feeling that the issue was R5's SCSI driver, which SV uses heavily. Considering that Zeta is known for having some rough edges, it wouldn't completely surprise me if there were issues when running under Zeta.
If SV crashes, click on 'Details' and then 'Debugger'. When the terminal window comes up, type in the command 'sc' (without the 's) and hit Enter. A pile of technical garbledygook will come up which you can copy to the Clipboard and e-mail to me privately. This will help immensely in figuring out what is going wrong.
I did look at the list of genres on Wikipedia, I think that might be a bit overkill. However, I will give a serious look at the genres in ArmyKnife and use all but perhaps the most obscure. When it comes to genres, there needs to be a balance between exactness of the genre and ease-of-use. For example, I know the musical differences between speed metal, thrash, and death metal, but if I go into that level of detail for every basic genre of music, there will be an exorbitant number of them to sift through to set something which shouldn't be all that difficult. Then again, I may do away with the menu entirely and put in a text box. Whatever happens, I'll put in quite a bit of thought to do my best to do it justice.
