folgers : Whay don't you talk to Bernd about using Zeta?
Dan0 = R5.1, have a look here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dano_%28BeOS%29
and for more BEOS information look here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beos
Zeta;
since 1.2 you don't need to activate it.
I think that Zeta 1.5 sp1 are the most stable of them all. And I’m using wlan with wep and hardware accelerated 3D (from rudolf) on a Dell Latitude C840 (hade 8200 before)
I don't think that distributing old illegal software on BeBits are making a good contribution to the community it's just silly thinking. Show support and by the damn thing (Zeta), or donate money to haiku.
And yes I have..

I requested a response through Palm's legal department.
That is when a postive response came through Tony Lim about educational uses (It took over a week to get a returned call).
Meanwhile,
Did Palm split into two ? Did ACCESS all or part?

On March 19, 2007 Tony Lim of Palm Incorporated returned my phone call about using exp/Dano (BeOS 5.1)for educational purposes. He does not see any problems. He said that it was a dead operating system ( from their standpoint ).
Note: This arrangement is for my school. At least we know that Palm will support education.

I hope the Haiku team can get a solid gold release out soon (*this* year!) so we can end this horrible *horrible* state: R5 Pro, PE, Bone, Max, DevEd, Phos, Dan0, Zeta X/Y/Z, ad absurdum!
One BeOS to rule them all. One simple pill for everyone to swallow.

If you don't think using beta code which was released in violation of an NDA is "illegal", you have a seriously warped view of the law. Additionally, Zeta's kernel is quite clearly not "the same", which you'd be able to tell if you did any form of binary comparison - or even checked its features. Its based on the same code, but thats a different issue.

I must have an AMD processor with a flaw, when testing Dano and Zeta it generates the exact same error symbols (chunks of code) when testing the KERNEL. The KERNEL appears to be the same.
Like Dano, I really do not believe that Zeta is illegal either.
BeOS Mr X seems to be acting in the best interest of the BeOS community. We should all show the same support for Dano, BeOS, or PhOS as we do Zeta.
Additional comments:
I thought it was nice that Looncraz offered to provide technical support if my students ( at the technical school ) had any questions.
Please get on a postive track, and support BeOS Mr X !

Yes, and I am just making tonnes of illegal cash over being such a pirate, aren't I, because I have so many ads on my website that pay for the hosting.. NOT !
Re: Dano
This was meant to be version R5 of beos (this is why R4.5 was better than R5) R5 was meant to contain bone, all the crazy new things in dano as well but it got pushed back because of the legal disputes with microsoft that be inc was focusing on. And then in the middle of the sell-out to palm it got leaked (nothing really leaks, it's just people who want to 'share' it)
. And then what happenend, Zeta somehow got the source to whatever it was , dan0.
But a 1 man team of looncraz (PhOS ) totally kicked the zeta OS's ass because they have no clue how to make a good operating system. I really wish that looncraz would 'come out' of hiding because I think he's the coolest beos developer.
More legalities - did Palm inc ever once give a FUCK about what the beos users did with all the leaked material - aka BONE, dan0, beta kits ? NO NOT ONCE NOT EVEN A SLIVER! THEY MAKE PALM PILOTS FOR GOODNESS SAKES NOT OBSCURE, UNSUPPORTED, COMPUTER-GEEK OPERATING SYSTEMS!

Okay, consider this: someone takes a copy of MacOS 8.1 (functionally obsolete) and posts it to a well-known Macintosh software archive, say like VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Would they accept it, knowing that it was copyrighted software that Apple never released gratis to the broader public?
I think this illustrates the position BeBits is in. Frankly, I'm surprised the admin folks don't weigh in more often on issues like this; perhaps they're just busy and have bigger fish to fry. It's really a matter of what kinds of association and reputation they want people to have with their site, and not a matter of the technical legality of any given piece of software.
Personally, I think it's pretty ballsy to post or link to things like BONE and Dano, and yet we all know that the usability of BeOS is massively improved when using BONE or Dano. PE as-is sucks, and it really shows the worst side of BeOS. Yeah, I use BeOS 5 Pro with the betas, and if Palm had a big issue with that, they could haul me into court. It's obvious this is all so small-fry to Palm that they don't bother.
Does BeBits want to get a rep as a site that let's anything go as along as it gets more people to use BeOS / Zeta / Haiku, or does it want to stay legal according to 6-year old SLAs from a defunct company, or does it want to exist in some gray are in-between? That's the real question here.

BeOS Mr X,
Thank-you for the posting. My eleven year old son really loves Dano. He uses TunePrepper to convert music from his CD collection over to MP3. Updating the lib files has allowed Dano to run most of software posted on BeBits. He has over 50 games working. The newest VLC media player works perfect too. The addition of USB drivers has even allowed my son to transfer MP3 files over to his USB flash drive player.
I have found Dano to be very stable (more than BeOS Max and Zeta) with these new lib files.
There is a group of us in Austin that are thinking about a Dano Users Group. We would like to have web-site devoted only to Dano and Dano applications only. I have begun introducing Dano to my students in a radio communications at a local technical school.
I want to say thank-you again BeOS Mr X for posting of files for download.
Additional Comment:
1) I still do not know how to register Zeta when you have a stand alone PC without access to the internet!
2) Zeta needs the competition from BeOS and Dano.

I am not sure but some time ago maybe some months or so there were still 1-2 shops which sold BeOS Software also BeOS Pe, and I think it's still better if someone tries to buy it on ebay.
And yes maybe there is some more illegal Software on bebits, however I am only making some comments, I stoped to release Software here...
And I can't see any sense to support illegal Distributions, especially there is a commercial Version and Haiku, maybe not everyone is satisfied with ZETA but it doesn't change the facts...
however it's my last comment to the case because it doesn't make sense to talk it over with "BeOS Mr.X" because he behaves sometimes like a little child...

I don't see what makes this collection of "warez" so controversial. I don't recall anyone complaining when PE, Max, XBEOX, and DevEd were linked on BeBits, though as far as I can tell, they are just as illegal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when reading the BeOS R5 PE license agreement, I found the following quote:
"LIMITATIONS ON USE
You may not rent, lease, sell or otherwise transfer or distribute copies of the Program to others. You may not modify or translate the Program without the prior written consent of Be Incorporated."
The way I understand it, this means PE is illegal unless you got it directly from Be, and all its derivatives are illegal no matter what. So, Mr. X's archive doesn't break any laws that haven't already been broken on BeBits.

I do not understand... some people would rather 'ignore history' and shun their own existence. A real user of an OS like this would spread and collect. What happened to making invisible the windows only software we had here instead of mine ? So far I have found the BeOS users to be the most backward of any internet community I have been on. I mean they really hate themselves !!!
Seriously, only about 10 people use this OS everyday, nobody is going to care if so called warez from 2001 is going along on someone else's server. Put a sock in you mouth for goodness sakes.
