Tk was nearly done...

... by a number of great BeOS peeps (and ex Haiku devs) until some big catastrophe happened that made them leave.

Tcl/Tk was almost done. If you hunt hard enough it might still be possible to resurrect.

Ruby Tk

Pete I appreciate the work you have done.

There are so many things that can be done without a GUI. Some people put too much work into the graphics and not enough effort into good programming.

A GUI has its place when displaying graphs of mathematical functions, antenna radiation patterns, field strength contours, and spectral plots. Also as an interface to a radio communications device.

I love physics, mathematics, and radio communications.
If you add any graphics capabilities to Ruby, I will use them!

Tk would be the best, but tough work.

Curses...

[Pun probably intended...]

Hmm. Yes that is missing, isn't it? Turns out I've never installed, nor had a need for, ncurses on any of my BeOS systems.
Dou you actually have a need, or is this just a completeness issue?
(Personally, I'd rather have a GUI, which would probably have to be Tk -- though I rather detest that scheme. Tk would have to be ported first, though!)

Pete,

Install of new Ruby-S went well. Ruby makes learning OO programming a pleasure. The possiblities for use in the field of communications are vast. I have been testing libraries. Might there be a Library Curses in the future?

[Sigh -- Getting back to the last *relevant* post...]

> BeOS version 5.1 comes with BONE (native).
I assumed it did (though I lose track of version numbers -- I guess 5.1="Dano"?)
>

This is a *great* book! I just bought it a couple of weeks back, and realized how much I still didn't know about Ruby!

Isn't it just... (:-)) [And your wish is my command... as I'm sure you've noticed!]

[And a final note on the "flood" of messages. The original complainer should be ashamed of himself. This place is for discussing the associated programs -- not dissing people because of a particular posting habit...]

@MYOB - coments

I have followed the correct procedures. I made promises that I will keep. David has the authority to grant permission.

The lawyers work for ACCESS - not the other way around.

MYOB: Thank-you for your comments.

Drop the obnoxious signature block, and bear in mind that he's head of open source and not the legal team - the only people who can give permission.

David said:

"This certainly sounds entirely fine to me. Thanks for providing the details of your planned use and thanks for asking!"

Any further comments?

And his response was?

Presumably it was the same "we'll not prosecute" response given for BeOS Max. Which is one hell of a way off something being with permission.

I also can't see the educational value in beta software.

It is the application that is special.
ACCESS has a policy of supporting education.

Our school has an internship agreement with an EDUCATIONAL NON-PROFIT radio station.

I promised David at ACCESS that OS will only be used for training students and interns for broadcasting careers. I will never allow it to be reverse engineered or sold.

I hope this clears things up for everyone.

Sincerely,

Edward M. LeBlanc

My permission now comes from ACCESS.
Do you have and further comments ?

we are aware of that...

Do you need to post "with permission" - which you 'have' from the wrong company, by the way - at the end of every BeBits talkback you do?

BeOS version 5.1 comes with BONE

BeOS version 5.1 comes with BONE (native).

After installing Ruby:
Went to the terminal
cd /boot/home/config/bin
Found Ruby there
.rb files created with text editor run!

I did purchase the book "Programming Ruby The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide" (the one with the pick axe on the cover).

Please continue to post updated versions. Ruby is so much fun.

May work with net_server R5 too
 By Pete G. - Posted on April 26, 2007 - 15:42:25   (#21604)

Glad to know it works with 5.1... Because I compiled it under BONE (and it needed the BONE headers to compile) I assumed it wouldn't work without it. However, I finally actually tried it on a box switched back to net_server, and it still worked. So maybe it's R6 universal (as long as you don't want networking!).
