Just installed 3.31 from the valet package, and there seem to be some problems. For a start, the app did not find the magic files (in /etc/magic). Looking at the binary, it seems to want them actually in /boot/beos/share/magic, so I created that folder and moved them there, after which things were a bit better.
However -- every file I tried, except text, has just been labelled as data! No further identification. The one on my linux box on the other hand is very good at telling me things like the size of a jpg.
I may play with the source version later, but as of now it is not that much use.

I looked at a couple files, and the license appears to be BSD-like...
It certainly made no reference to GPL where I looked.
The page you linked to also references it as a BSD license.
If in doubt, you can check the license verbiage in the code files against the standard licenses available here:

Actually there is no mention of a specific license but since the code comes from Debian/GNU Linux I supposed it was GPL. I will look into it and correct if needed.

It would appear that this is BSD licensed, not GPL... am I wrong?
