To get a barcode for myself I am in need of a programm to generate my barcode. ( http://www.squaregear.net/fonts/free3of9.shtml ) or a text to barcode generator.
Would be nice to have this compiled for BeOs.
I just opened the .zip to find out that these fonts needed to genereate a "3 of 9" barcode. So it is working in HAIKU. Type a text and change the font for it.
True Type fonts ( xyz.ttf) go to the boot/beos/home/config/fonts folder...

Ah, ok.. lots of information. Seems to be a good idea to buy a PS/2 or a USB one without a driver... This one will be recognized by the OS like a keyboard.

To create a valid 3 of 9 barcode you have to begin and end it with a special character. Scanners look for this character to know where to start and stop reading the barcode. It is represented in this font with the '*' character. So, to create a barcode for the text "ABC123" you have to type out "*ABC123*". Note that barcode readers will not include the *'s in the text they return. They will just give you the "ABC123".
...think I got it thanks very much.

If you need to (for a stockroom or your own numbering system) make your own barcodes, I recommend:
http://www.squaregear.net/fonts/free3of9.shtml
Then it's just a matter of laying it out so it fits in the labels you have...you could even do this with CSS2 if you wanted. In BeOS though I don't know if printing from a browser is the way to go yet, but it may be some day.

Don't know what a square barcode is :( But I just buy a scanner on ebay which don't need a driver and work like a keybord. Like this on (no guarantee that this on will work just a example):
http://cgi.ebay.de/USB-BARCODESCANNER-BARCODELESER-BARCODE-SCANNER-LESER_W0QQitemZ260190536531QQihZ016QQcategoryZ74164QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Our barcodescanner gives just ascii chars. You can open styleedit, plugin the scanner, scan a barcode and the barcode is writen in styleedit! I configure our scanner (barcodescanner manual) in such a way that it sends a pre and a postfix. So I know when a imput from the scanner begins and when the imput ends.

Is this type of code readable too?
But very nice program, will try it even I dont have a barcodescanner yet. What kind of barcode scanner you sugesst?

We use a normal usb scanner (don't know the manufacturer maybe noname). The scanner is handled as a keyboard by the bios. When I installed the haiku usb kit it still keeps working :-). To seperate the scanner input from a normal keyboard input I use the pre/postfix of the scanner. For my scanner it is char number 92. I don't know if other scanners use a pre/postfix and if it is also 92.
To answer your question fairtrade handle everything between the pre and the postfix as a barcode, also letters I think.
p.s. tip: if the scanner can't read the barcode (or you have no scanner) you can insert it manually by pressing F2
