IMO those devices (xen, ipod) should be handled by a virtual file system add-on instead of a custom app. But that needs a framework to make it easy to write those. I've been thinking about an extended World-O-Networking like fs that would also publish scanners from SANE, and other devices with add-ons; but didn't write it yet.
Btw, we already have apps that support iPods, like the one from an italian guy, should be possible to share source.
Btw, I'd suggest contributing to IM Kit instead, it's cross-protocol:

Hopefully we can get webcam support in it someday.

It's very experimental development, ported from LibNJB for Linux. It requires usb patch as well (if somebody wants to use it under BeOS R5). Also, the supported functions right now are
a) Download music list
b) Upload music
c) Download music
I could upload hundreds of mp3s, however as many people mention, the BeOS USB stack is crap so that needs a special care.
Btw, the hardware u r talking gives me an impression of the vendor specific or something that doesn't supported by BeOS. So somebody has to code the driver/frontend for that.
I have a plan for coding libipod once i buy iPod/iPhone but not soon because I'm rewriting yahoo messenger from pidgin,using native BeOS libraries. Currently you can IM and Chat from the software
which works pretty well but still needs some effort for file transfers and more.

My brother recently bought such a thing (and found out it wouldn't play the format from the camera he wanted to use it to preview things form...).
What does it bring that can't be done from mass storage though?
