Further development?

Is someone able to contact Claes as to ask him what are the odds of further development and/or open-sourcing of this extremely valuable application?

It would be a shame to let CL-Amp rust. The app is great, but it would be very nice to be able to get some quirks fixed and a couple of new features added.

PhOS & CL-Amp

Yes CL-Amp is unable to save certain settings under PhOS but I never concluded why, in the end you can do a few things to force it but it typically will revert even after doing a few of the tricks I found, best to not use PhOS.

Skin changing works

After choosing the skin don't close the selector but the full application and start it again. Strange ... but it works for me :)
I'm using ZETA.

When I select the skin window, (alt+s)I select the skin, it shows on CL-amp, but then... after I exit the skin window, CL-Amp snaps back to the default skin.
I am using Phos b5.

Crashing & a bebits problem

Is anyone else having crashes trying to load a larger playlist (couple hundred songs)?

Also, the last two links on the download page here bring you to a "submit user link" page instead of starting a download.

skin change

changing CL-Amp's skin is a bit harder than just a BMessage, unlike SoundPlay. I might release a plugin to do that someday.

double-size all windows and skin-change request

There was an an old post below with a question of how to double-size the main window or the playlist or equalizer windows.

Just select the equalizer or playlist or main window and press control-D; this will toggle double-size on/off for that window.

Question: Does anyone know of a way (e.g. BMessage ?) that we can get the WinAmp functionality of changing to a random skin on play (i.e. show a new skin from skins folder when a new song stars playing)?

updated mpg123 plugin would be nice.

A plugin based off the current mpg123 decoder would be wonderful as its always being optimized and improved and its been quite a while since cl-amp has been updated.

Is there any way to view the Artist and Track names when listening to ShoutCast radio stations?

SoundPlay does this, but I like CL-Amp's interface better.

please, _please_ provide an option to not read ID3 info from files when loading a playlist!!
It takes up to a minute to read all the info when opening many files, and my computer is barely usable during this time!!
If this option already exists, where is it?? I can't find it in any options windows

otherwise, pretty good program
thanks

No worries

People! No need to "defend" a software program! I have obviously had some problems - if you want to be positive, try to help! Remember, I was all in all *very* complimentary of CL-Amp. These talkback forums are a place for *talkback*, not just glowing reviews.

Instead of saying "It does too, so there!", etc., say "Hmm, that's an odd result that I haven't had." and offer support. Or don't offer support, but be polite.

Keep it friendly, and no hard feelings on my part anyway.

And NeoWolf - next time you have a pet peeve to take up with someone, take it up in private if at all. I (and probably most people who read this forum) could not care less.

I apologize

I didn't really want to start a flame war or fight, I just get agrivated when someone makes complains about a program that someone else spent hardwork on. You didn't pay for it and obviously you can't do better, so I don't see any reason to complain. It's just one of my pet-peeves and I'm sorry.

sorry but no...

Ok now I don't really want to jump into a potential fight but Cl-Amp will play files just fine without the extension. I am playing an mp3 with no extension right now using Cl-Amp. From what I have read I think the problem is with your set up not Cl-Amp, but in keeping with what you had said about what one does & does not know I do not know how much you know about setting Be up. All I'm saying is the claims you have posted are rather false on my machine. But talking the the community you will see one common thing. Each persons systems REALLY have their own personality. For instance after installing BePDF if I do not right click & identify a newly down loaded mp3 BePDF will try to open it. So for a test i deleted any BePDF mine info. The result... Style Edit now seems to think IT plays mp3's! hah the fact is we all have a weird thing or too happen the question is how do we make our next versions more uniform. The media kit is old & on top of that it was very "green" Be has been snuffed b4 it's prime & that's why we are working to continue it. There where many problems with sections of the system .i.e. the media server will go buggy & distort audio on creative cards. That's a major flaw on sadly one of the THE most popular audio cards for the common PC. So let's not fight - let's yell at our screens, maybe break a keyboard or two if need be & go for a walk to calm down shall we?

I say again...

I do understand what I'm talking about. It's unfortunate that you chose to comment on what you think I know or don't know. A simple point-by point rebuttal, without the edge, would have been more appropriate for a public forum.

1. CL-Amp does allow files to be associated with it by MIME type. Unfortunately, it doesn't actually play things unless they have extensions. This on a stock install of BeOS with latest CL-AMP. That's just stupid, legacy style behavior on CL-AMP's part, not in keeping with the BeOS, which does NOT require file extensions at all - that's what MIME types are for. This is a common issue in many BeOS programs. Not a huge issue, granted, but definitely legacy.

2. I understand that Media Kit addons are harder to write. Still, on principle, that's how BeOS audio is supposed to work. There are certain applications for CL-AMP style source plugins, to handle things like streaming media, perhaps. I wasn't really addressing ease of development in my previous post, nor do I care to do so here. My point is, if the system can do something, the system SHOULD do that something. Anything else is duplication.

3. I am annoyed at the fact that disabling the Vorbis Audio CL-AMP plugin does not pass through to my decoder of choice, the BeOS Media Kit. I don't really give a rat's behind about its age - it works everywhere else, it _should_ work in CL-AMP. More odd behaviour from the program.

Besides these three points (and the lack of a balance control), I rather like CL-AMP and was quite complimentary to it in my last post. Still, it's nowhere near perfect.

To the one before me...

You don't seem to understand what you're talking about very well. For one thing, media kit add-ons are substantially harder to write than audio plugins, and it's not a matter of forcing you to use them; but giving coders a chance to get something over quicker. The BeOS media kit is wonderful, but still glitchy. CL-Amp also works on mimetype and file extension - as all BeOS apps tend to do; which is _normal_. And finally, the vorbis media kit add-on is nice but it's a HACK - and an old one. The most recent CL-Amp plugin superceeds the media kit add-on but nearly two years.

CL-Amp handles a number of things badly

CL-Amp is a nice bit of software, definitely the best free MP3 player for BeOS. Unfortunately it does not do many things in the correct manner for BeOS.

The whole idea of using "CL-AMP input plugins" for audio decoding is a throwback to the Windows way of doing things. MediaKit addons are the proper way to add support for most file formats.

CL-AMP depends on file extensions to detect filetype in many cases. BeOS does not require file extensions! This is wrong.

In some cases, even when a format is supported by the MediaKit, CL-AMP forces you to use an input plugin for it. For instance I am forced to use the (awful) C++ Vorbis Plugin for CL-AMP, when I have a superior Vorbis addon installed in my media kit.

Still, the software is useable. Soundplay is definitely more BeOS-centered and flexible, even though it's not perfect either. But for the money, you won't find a better player than CL-AMP.

For the most part, good job, Claes!

Allright! But...

That's right, okay, CL-Amp's got plenty of cool features and most people would enjoy it and take pleasure using it, anyway there's just one point I dislike a lot: CL-Amp just doesn't want to play files without any recognized extension. Anyway, let's suppose you get an MP3 file named "tohubohu". Well, unless you rename it "tohubohu.mp3", it won't be played! It may be really anoying, especially if you want to play such files from a CD-R or a CD-ROM, since then you can't rename them!
Whatever, maybe the latest version of CL-Amp doesn't do this. I just downloaded it and I will try it as soon as I can.

If you are looking for a mp3 player for the BeOS, then this app for you. It plays Mp3 files flawlessly, configurable with Winamp skins and loads of other features... Just read the program descriptions. Since it's free, there's simply no reason not to try it. This one's a gem.
